How Do We Know We're Reading the Actual Bible? (With Dr. Dan Block)

The Bible was written a very long time ago, and over the centuries the individual books that make it up have been hand copied hundreds of thousands of times. So what happens when the copies don't precisely agree? How sure can we be what we're reading now is an accurate rendering of what was written down in the first place? Dr. Dan Block specializes in this and was kind enough to sit down and talk me through the process of sorting out the challenging parts of working through the biblical manuscripts in the process of translating the Bible from the original languages to modern languages.

Thank you. This shows why still some of our seminaries require Hebrew and Greek and even Latin at least at the beginning level so that we know what goes into translation from any angle, Conservative or Liberal. And the importance of studying scripture critically as seek to render it faithfully to our congregations. Sadly some denominations claim they do not use a critical method when reading and studying and meditating on God's word...but they do. The language skills and having resources that help in this augments what it means to be a pastor and theologian in a local congregation

Brother Whitman this series will help the curious with limited "Bible background" and church members who do not typically think about "what's behind the curtain." Thank you. I'm a pastor struggling with what church has become and how to help it become what God is directing us toward. Videos like this help transform entrenched thinking about "inspiration" and find healthier ways to interact with the Bible. I wish there was a way to buy you lunch and talk about the 21st Century evolution of the Church.

It's a good thing we have people as passionate as this guy! Especially regarding the image of Moses that he was talking about. Maybe these people were highly regarded, but we have to remember that they were human, just like any other people. Keep in mind that Moses also made God angry at some points, even after the escape from Egypt.

I trust the bible as the place to go if I want to know about the God but I will admit sometimes it does feel very fantastical. Whether or not some of the stories are literal or figurative in the end I still choose to believe the words on the page as truth because as I continue to pursue God in the bible I find it changing me and my gut just tells me this is truth.

This reminds me of seeing a museum exhibition on Biblical manuscripts. When I think of copying a text by hand, I think of copying words; as long as the words are copied in order, that's ok. But the manuscripts were copied one line to another line, character-by-character. They were more like photocopies than what I think of as hand copies.

Textual scholars of the Hebrew scriptures from 500BC need to estimate how many copies were probably made and in use after the exile, up to the creation of the Septuagint, which may have marked the peak (300 BC) of the collation, copying and translation. It's still a remarkable feat of copying. In comparison, the development of the Quran took a very different route and the version in popular use today was only 'canonised' in Cairo in 1929. When commenting on the reliability of the text by citing the Dead Sea Scroll, our OT editorial expert failed to mention that the 16th Century Reformers who leveraged their Jewish scholars' influence with the Masoretic version of the OT in only keeping what scriptures were preserved in the Hebrew, ignores the finding at Qumran of Tobit etc in the Hebrew, dated to as early as 100 BC, thus proving the canon of the Septuagint to be more accurate than that of the 10th Century Jewish canon.

Lol, I went to check my Bible to see what Judges 18:30 says...The English Standard Version is good to go, I'm proud to say, it's my favorite literal translation, NLT is my favorite daily reader, as well...I will note that the Bible translation everyone touts as the most accurate of all the NASB has the Manasseh error, which is kind of funny to me as much as it gets hyped-up for accuracy, because I completely agree with the man, corruptible scribes we're trying to protect Moses & his reputation...playing like that is what led to exile man.
@reeferfranklin
@reeferfranklin Год назад
There's another verse I like to check in Bible translations, it's Romans 5:12...Jerome mistranslated the Greek "ἐφ’ ᾧ" (eph' hō) which means "because" as "in quo" in the Latin Vulgate which is rendered to English as "in whom" in translations like the 1382 Wycliffe Bible, 1526 Tyndale Bible, 1535 Coverdale Bible, 1568 Bishop's Bible, 1582 Douay-Rheims Bible, 1599 Geneva Bible, 1611 Authorized King James Version and pretty much any other translation that used the Latin Vulgate as a source text...which led to the heterodox doctrine of inherited guilt that most Western Christian denominations believe as a consequence of offshooting from Roman Catholicism...the orthodox doctrine of Original Sin being that we inherited the consequences of Adam & Eve's sin, but not the guilt, for "fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin." - Deuteronomy 24:16 (echoed again in Ezekiel, Jeremiah & 2 Kings)
@reeferfranklin
@reeferfranklin Год назад
I actually really love the Eastern Orthodox teaching on this, death entered the world because Adam & Eve sinned, people die as a consequence of sin, but people also sin as a consequence of fearing death, it's the source of every unloving non-sacrificial act we make, so just as death is a consequence of sin, sin is a consequence of death, a vicious cycle Satan uses to terrorize us with, until we die to this world, realizing that Christ conquered the physical death we fear so much, it's a shift of mentality that lets you strap on the armor of God & charge into battle as opposed to trying to save your own tail at the expense of others...it's a beautiful doctrine really...die to this world, volunteer to take up your cross & follow Him.

I disagree that this subject, as a whole, is as simple as vowel translations that don’t change the story. The Masoretic manuscripts translated a particular word into “young woman”, whereas the Septuagint translates it as “virgin”, when describing Mary. This is a HUGE deal and could change everything, depending on which is correct. If this one thing is this important, imagine what else might be equally as important. Which did Jesus quote from? The Septuagint. Some will say this was solely because they spoke Greek at the time and this was the translation they had, so Jesus wouldn’t have had any choice but to quote from that manuscript. So… you’re telling me… the son of God, literally God in the flesh… quotes from a potentially wrong translation simply due to limitations of the texts available at the time? I think not. Every verse in the Bible has infinite meaning. There’s no end to them. For those who read the Bible at face value, I truly hope you dig deeper. Such a simplistic interpretation of the Bible will result in an equally simplistic proclaimed faith. My point is, these distinctions matter A LOT. Because each word in the Bible is not coincidental. Changing even one word could drastically change the truth.
@MattWhitmanTMBH
@MattWhitmanTMBH 2 года назад
I think Dr. Block suggested something like 99% of the textual conflicts are inconsequential and easily resolved. My work has yielded the same impression. That said, the one your brought up is the big one. The very big one, and it's entirely fair and helpful for you to mention it. The Septuagint underscores almost the entire New Testament with 90% of quotes being drawn from it as opposed to Hebrew text traditions. In addition to the "young woman" issue, the tension between the two is noticeable in Jesus' reading of Isaiah 61 at the synagogue in Luke 4. There is looks like some sort of hybrid between the Greek Septuagint and Hebrew text traditions is present. Beyond that, I think even most well-informed students of the Bible would have trouble coming up with a well-known tension off the top of their heads without googling. I think Dr. Block is mathematically correct in his assertion that nearly all tensions in the manuscripts supporting the Old Testament are easily resolved, and there are very solid arguments in support of resolving the issues you and I have raised as well. Again, I appreciate the helpful and insightful comment.
@kevinsaint20
@kevinsaint20 2 года назад
@@MattWhitmanTMBH I would potentially agree with the mathematical correctness of the stats he gave. I’m actually a mathematician by trade and my point was more along the lines of the 1% having infinitely more importance than the other 99% in some sense. It’s a bit misleading and, in my opinion, downplays the importance of that 1%. For example, I did some work for Northrop Grumman in the city of LA. They wanted us to calculate the scenario at a 4-way intersection that yielded the least probability of an accident, with particular attention to transition times between stop lights (from green to yellow to red). What we found was that the scenario that yielded the least probability for an accident to occur (at a 4-way intersection) was to remove all of the stop lights and for every car from every direction to be going at least 240 mph. Of course, when other factors are considered, this scenario is not practical and is misleading because you may fail to realize that when an accident does occur, everybody within 3/4 of a mile radius of the intersection will likely die. My point being, I don’t like the casual way the 99% correct ones are portrayed. That 1% matters more than, perhaps, anything else. I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and love this discourse. More people should engage in such. I’d also like to mentioned that I’m a fairly early student of the Bible and Christianity. I’m, by no means at all, an expert on these things. I have approached religion the same way one would approach a mathematical proof. You start with your axioms and question everything on your way to the conclusion. It didn’t take long for me to realize how lightly people took their biblical studies and just how thin their foundation was. Certainly not suggesting that’s the case with you or Dr. Block, just giving context to my opinions.

@@kevinsaint20, keep in mind, also, that the Masoretic text is a Jewish translation that was intentionally translated to minimize the texts Christians were using to prove Jesus is the Messiah. It is also one of the reasons why certain books (e.g. Wisdom of Solomon) is found in the Septuagint but not the Masoretic.

@@tryingnottobeasmartass757 exactly. I made that point earlier in my comment with reference to the translation of “virgin”. Masoretic text translated that Hebrew word into “young woman” whereas LXX translates it to “virgin”, seemingly downplaying the divinity of Jesus

So, the scriptures say that God created "everything." This is a consolidation of Genesis 1 and Chapter One of John's gospel. He made the earth to bring forth the base materials for the paper and the ink. He made mankind out of the same earth. He made the mind to think, to comprehend the words, to communicate His thoughts and His responses to what has happened. He states that He is just, and will bring all things into judgement. He has given me to understand how we are to live. John 12.44-50.

Ok, so you are going to ignore the LXX (Septuagint), which was quoted by the Apostles? The Mazoretic text is much younger! Moreover, the Dead Sea Scrolls accord more with the LXX than the Mazoretic text! How do you justify this? I am getting the idea, that you chose your beliefs based on your feelings not on the reality of what was written! Protestantism has much to answer for - your high view of scripture is based on the distractions entered in the text by the KJB translators as opposed to reality! “Let the text take me where it wants it wants to”, should be - “let it take me where I want it to take me!”

"How Do We Know We're Reading the Actual Bible?" Because it is full of scientific errors, moral problems and internal contradictions. Although the scribes have "smoothed out" many issues, it remains very clear that it is very close to the originals.

Yeah, but the NLT is a garbage translation, so it was all a waste. "We have a high view of Scripture. And we are determined to hear what God wants us to hear without the distractions that have entered into the text." Has he actually read the NLT? Like, at all?

Have you like at all? Try de-puffing your chest and read the 2015. I challenge you. Spend one month in the NLT every day, 10 chapters a day (5 OT 5NT) and report back. You’ll be humbled

Dr. Block is continually speaking about HEBREW texts and manuscripts. This interviewer keeps bringing up the New Testament manuscripts and getting things very confused. The transmission of Hebrew is TOTALLY different from the Greek. Totally. You can not confuse the two since the Greek manuscripts are absolutely chock full of errors and mistranslations - from the original Aramaic. The Aramaic New Testament manuscripts were copied EXACTLY like the Hebrew ones. They have very little changes. But the Greek are confused and error ridden.
