"Beware of consultants who haven't done it". Let me play devil's advocate here: If someone has consulted with dozens of businesses and seen what works and what doesn't, don't they have a larger base of knowledge and fact patterns to draw from than someone who is done it once or twice themselves? A doer can tell you what worked for THEM with their specific conditions and circumstances. A well connected consultant can tell what worked for a half a dozen other companies in the same situation as you.

Fair point, but I guess I assumed that if you had pools of consultants of each type, you wouldn't pick the newbie. So it'd be more like a choice of broad consulting experience with or without the personal experience.

I somewhat disagree. I used to work for a business coach that built two $40m companies from zero in five years both times, and his clients would pay 5-10x market rate because he’s been there and done it. The wealth of experience from top to bottom is invaluable to a CEO scaling their company.
