What is Poetry? We explore one kind of definition by looking at the etymology of 'poem' and its connection to emotion, William Blake and the Romantics, and the philosophy and science of perception.
For the more technical definition of poetry, see our video "Verse" • What's the Difference ...

Why didn't they teach poetry like that when I went to school? Loved it.

One of my favorite episodes, although I'll admit I was starting to get a bit overwhelmed near the end, maybe that's just me being tired. I'm looking forward to the next part. It might be silly but you talking about Blake's "The Tyger" and using its illustration in the thumbnail made me think about a poem "The Tiger" by a certain 6-year-old student named Nael, that got popular recently, after being published in the “You Will Be Able to Say a Thousand Words.” anthology. The tiger He destroyed his cage Yes YES The tiger is out BTW the cerebral cortex is literary called the brain bark in Polish - _kora mózgowa_ and I actually just learned how it's called in English thanks to this video.

I hadn't seen that poem -- love it, thanks! And thanks for the Polish parallel, too; I guess it makes sense if it was the Latin scientific term, that it got translated literally into various other languages. And thanks for the kind words -- it was a lot to fit in, it's true -- which is why we divided our original script into two parts! :)

Not this year, I’m afraid. Though I guess this one is about poetry and the Romantics, that counts, right? ;) My most Valentine-related video was “Cuckold”, which is far more innocent & relevant to Valentine’s Day than it sounds!

Artur M. i also found it was a lot of information. extremely interesting, but too much to digest all at once. probably be a good idea to come back to this video in a day or so and watch it again. and then perhaps, again in a week.

Is it possible that “rhapsode” is related to sewing because of a tradition of reciting poetry or telling stories while doing handicrafts? (And might this be related to the metaphor of “spinning a yarn” for telling a story?
@Alliterative
@Alliterative 5 лет назад
There are certainly lots of weaving, spinning, sewing, and other textile-related metaphors in poetic terms, especially in Greek; it's often pointed out, but I don't know what work's been done on the reasons behind it (other than the fact that it does work quite well as an image), and whether (for instance) it's connected to a tradition of female craftworkers and story tellers. Weaving songs and storytelling while doing textile work does turn up in many places in Greek myth and literature, though. We should follow up on that thought...

As a mildly synesthetic person, I get incredibly annoyed by all the obsession over the phenomenon that's out there. It's not magic. Thank you for this comparatively frank discussion.

Being prevented from doing so, actually. He attempted it but was stopped, in order to be hanged. It's pretty brutal, tbh.

EXIT ANTIGONUS, PURSUED BY A BEAR... I doubt he would be able to find tranquillity and write a poem on the subject, let alone fear the bear!

I am new to this channel and I wonder why the text is spoken so quickly, my mind is not working that fast, apart from that I am not native English. I think it could easily last almost twice as long for me... I know I can stop it on every sentence, but I just wanted to mention it, maybe others have a likewise feeling. The world is already that hasty... ;)

I was told I think too literally, when I analyzed poetry in 10th grade so, I don't read poetry.

I sometimes think the worst possible thing we can do for poetry is teach it in high school…

@@Alliterative Yeah, I just got discouraged and my teacher clearly didn't know how to teach me...and instead made me feel like I was the problem. People just don't understand how important and impactful teachers are...we need to pay them more and toss the bad ones. I love learning about the origins of words! Thank you for doing these videos!
