I agree there's a lot of lines blurred between YA and adult and sometimes you get these YA books where they have a concept better suited for adult and it's not executed in a way that actually explores it well.

speaking to the CAWPILE system...I never use the part with the decimals (and have never seen a user who does) I find that thinking about these different categories really helps me process my experience with the book; the rating that it calculates at the end has almost always made sense

Not every book is written not have string characters and plot and atmosphere and writing, I think the system fails to acknowledge that a book doesn’t need all these things to be a 4 or 5 star book

I simply rate books on how much I enjoyed it, because that’s what books are meant for. Enjoyment and not everyone’s going to agree but it’s ok.

I don't rate (unless I want to give 5 stars) because I find it difficult to put a number on my enjoyment 😅 That being said, if I would rate, I would also rate DNFs haha. Just because I think 'I disliked it soooo much that I can't even continue, people should know that'. I honestly think books that most people DNF have a higher average rating than books that are mehhh because the mehhh books get 2-3 stars, while the DNFs don't get low ratings, only the people who finished it do and they might like it more. So a DNF, depending on why I DNFd it, would probably get 1 or 2 stars. I understand that you can't rate the entire book, but who cares that the ending is great when the first half is unreadable? PEOPLE SHOULD BE WARNED I don't look at whether it's self published or not. It's either enjoyable or it's not enjoyable I guess. But I don't care tooo much about a typo from time to time and as a non English speaker I probably won't even notice gramatical errors lol. But I don't feel like I should be more lenient to 'help the author' when reviews are for reviewers. Maybe I'm just a savage 😂 It's a good thing I don't rate

I write a review for 90% of books I read but only because it's usually 2 sentences or less. We live in the day and age where nobody reads. Be concise, people! lol

I use half stars from 1 to 5 for ratings and I rate according to genre and target audience (comparing contemporary romance with other contemporary romance or middle grade with other middle grade, etc). I also do a little bit of rating books by my favourite authors 3 stars or so when I know they have better books and that 3 is better than other 3 stars. But not that much of it.

I rate books very simply. 5 - chef’s kiss, perfect, loved it 4 - very good, but not something I’d reread 3 - it was ok, probably don’t want to own it Anything below that, I usually end up DNFing the book, so I never end up rating lower than a 3. I made the decision to never read a book I’m not in love with, and I’ve been happy ever since.

I feel like I need to lean into this a bit more. It’s like I’m fighting my perfectionism of making sure I rate it “correctly” vs. knowing how many interesting books exist and if I’ll be able to get to them. Dear brain, it’s all subjective and let’s just have a good time.

I used to always rate a DNF, but now I only rate it if I've read over 50 percent. As to when I rate a book? When I'm getting past the 75 to 80 percent point, I'm usually already considering a small rating range (say 4 to 4.5).

I feel the same way Jess did about nonfiction. If I learned and didn’t hate it, it’s usually a 4 minimum 😂

I read books for fun and rate pretty much everything 4 or 5 stars, it has to be really meh or bad to get a 3 star. I feel to guilty to give anything lower
