Chances are you've had an X-ray at some point in your life, but did you know this life-saving technology was actually invented by accident? German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen discovered the technology while he was doing experiments with electron beams and gas discharge tubes - you know, like everyone does...
When performing these tests, he noticed that a fluorescent screen in his lab started to glow green while the electron beams were running. This wasn't surprising in its own right, but Roentgen's screen was shielded by heavy cardboard which he thought would block the radiation.
The interesting part of this discovery was that the initial aspect of Roentgen's discovery was simply the existence of some kind of penetrating radiation, but in trying to figure out what was happening, he actually put his hand in between the screen and the electron beam. This created an image of the bones inside of his hand on the screen, revealing X-ray's perfect use immediately after their discovery.
This double discovery marked arguably one of the most important medical advances in all of human history. It gave professionals the ability to see ailments inside the human body without invasive surgery. It even allowed them to see soft tissues with slight modification.
No one questions that X-rays are important to modern medicine, but most people don't have a great idea of what is actually happening when you get one. Let's figure that out...

I remember once asking my 5th grade teacher "how does an x-ray machine work". He just answered (struggled to answer) " ugh .. it's just invisible light that passes through you and is picked up by a film behind" .. While he's technically not wrong, I was referring to how does an x-ray machine produce x-rays... because I wanted to make one lol I was that weird kid. But now that I know that it's a tungsten-surfaced anode and a highly charged cathode in a glass vacuum .. i'm going to go make an x-ray machine :)

Great video! But there is to mention that the contrast fluid "omniscan" that is shown here is a gadolinium-based contrast agend, which has nothing to do with x ray exams but instead with mri exams. Also, you showed a lot of mri images, which is kind of misleading since there are no x rays used in mri scans. There is already a lot of confusion when it comes to the difference between x ray and mri, so i'd love to see more people getting this right in these kinds of viedos instead of causing more confusion. It's still a nice video though! :)

Why everytime I hear the history of Rontgen’s discovery its always slightly different? The initial object that glows, the objects used to shield the rays, etc. always change, you can look up the origin story and find 3 different tellings of it.

Hello, how are you? I have a question, please. What are the materials that x-rays cannot penetrate
@stephenoverthrow2463
@stephenoverthrow2463 3 месяца назад
Hi Red Zone. As an industrial radiographer, I inspect aircraft components using X-rays. One of the materials that are excellent at blocking X-rays is lead, which has a high absorption factor. This is why my X-ray enclosures where I perform my inspections have lead lined walls that absorb the radiation that X-rays produce. This keeps persons on the outside of the enclosures safe while X-rays are being produced. The inside and outside walls are monitored weekly for any radiation leaks with a geiger counter in accordance with the latest radiation regulations. Hope that helps.

I have a question regarding X-rays. If the X-ray results shows a lot of transparency in the bone itself, does that mean a lack of calcium? Or is that okay? My kitty cat got an X-ray and the doctor said everything is okay. But his hind bones are transparent. Can someone let me know if that should be of any concern. A vet that i happen to know once showed me an Xray of my kitty and pointed to a transparent area in the hip and it was almost translucent. Said he lacked calcium. So, i would like to know if anyone can maybe explain that to me with a little more detail.

Yes it is possible but I would suggest that you go for a bone densitometry scan. It use less radiation and it calculates your bone density. The results will indicate if you have osteopenia, osteoporosis etc. DEXA Bone densitometry scan.

So how do we get x-ray images from space? Wouldn't these rays take millions of light years to reach interstellar objects in space? How do we see x-ray images immediately if they're light rays? Should it takes millions of years to get these readings back from space?

a class should be taken with photoshoot or camera snapshot editor on human skeleton drawing technique. some realization should stir up people comparing camera shoot, xerox and x-ray time. obviously they need to wait a lot of x-ray process time. i would recommend people to change a behavior and turn their need to join more men gangster of mobile friend’s network and game playstation family application. this odd to a truth of technology cannot stop human to get back a nostalgic toyworld as accustomed to their childhood, not that classy model of personality action in a grand mother hi - school. 😅😮🎉
