The original design had the alien with eyes inside a translucent dome, but later designs made the dome opaque. The skull shape itself may simply be due to the alien taking on morphological traits of its host.

That's what I came up with too, because I noticed in a lot of the earlier stories and side stuff's that when a face hugger attached itself to a host...of anything...the final creature more or less resembles the host in some fashion. Look at the early and mid 90's action figures based off of Aliens. There was a bull Alien, Crap Alien, Snake Alien, Mantis Alien, Panther Alien, a Boar Alien, hell even a Bat Alien if I remember right. But on the other side of that coin, I remember one of the side Alien V Predator comics that some odd "Rhino/Dinosaur live stock" thing got a hugger attached and the end result Alien was a typical humanoid shaped warrior...go figure...

I really like the eyes behind the dome theory. Also I wouldn't be surprised if Xenoorphs can track prey by sensing their body heat like pit vipers do, kind of explains why they are so sensitive to fire.
@MachinedFace88ttv
@MachinedFace88ttv Год назад
I don't think that's true. I think they use sonar. They're kind of like Daredevil or a bat in that manner. Because there's been scenes where Ripley's right in front of the alien and it just moves on, it uses its own footsteps to create Sonic waves which bounce back at its giant head that acts like a radar. Thus, it sees sound. Probably almost better than we can see with our eyes. The only problem with this theory is how would they deal with background noise in a ship, the humming of the engine, etc. They got to have extremely good memory or a very tuned ear to sense a human vibration which they have classified as prey. Therefore, they can hear it through the burning of an engine or the wooing of an air vent

I was actually saddened when I noticed your channel is new, as I wanted to watch more. As for the topic at hand, I do believe that the sockets behind their dome may serve some sort of visionary purpose, but there has to be more. Most likely the pheromone option. We've been shown many times, usually when put in the position of the xenomorph itself (i.e video games) that they can easily pinpoint and differentiate targets through walls and the like. So it can't be just eyes. Unless.. x-ray vision..?

They have no ears that "are visible". Many animals and other critters here on Earth hear without ears, and even see without eyes, in the traditional sense, and many of these do so much better than humans do (or don't because these senses are needed much less than us in the environments they live in). Just because you don't see ears doesn't mean they don't have a way to hear. Ever seen ears on a bird???????? How do they hear????

Well there were recent discoveries of a ancient crocodile species having external ear bulges, it could have a similar inner strucure. Depending on how high/precise it can "feel, the the acuity of vibrational senses can be extremely high, with those ridge structures it could have billions of concentrated protected sensory nodules to detect air currents,pheromone changes,etc. Their body design does actually have a lot of possible sensory options that could all work together. A simple example for how high it could go would be the sensitivity of a spider, who can feel to the microscopic movments on nano threads.

I doubt that it would be echolocation because the Xenos have been shown to be able to see in the vacuum of space, where echolocation wouldn't work due to having nothing to travel through. I recall that in the AVP video games, Xenos can spot themselves and their prey even through walls by using pheromones (like how it was explained in this video). I also read somewhere that the domed part of the Xeno's face is actually a visual receptor, giving it the necessary depth perception it needs to perform precision strikes.

The more specific term is "kairomone", since the emitted substance would be detected by a _different_ species to its relative benefit. Anyway, how would an alien detect these chemicals through a solid wall? Unless there's enough ventilation and circulation between the two spaces, there's no way for those odors to reach the alien's sensory organs all the way from the person's body, especially if the person is far away and blocked off... unless xenos have special psychic powers or something. Of course, it's just fiction and logic doesn't fully apply. Still, chemical messengers aren't enough to totally explain in-universe how aliens "see".
@maw8533
@maw8533 6 лет назад

I would interpret this as "cinematic liberty". It would be hard to visualize sensing heat signatures, molacular changes due to smell(fear), pressure etc for humans. I feel like they have a "classic visual sense" depending on the host, but i always believed in a "special" sense on the specimen. (Combination of terestrial animal senses, shark/snake etc. can feel slightes changes in molecules, pressure, heat etc.)

There is also the possibility of electroreception: "Electroreception is the biological ability to perceive natural electrical stimuli. It has been observed almost exclusively in aquatic or amphibious animals, since salt-water is a much better conductor than air, the currently known exceptions being echidnas, cockroaches and bees. Electroreception is used in electrolocation (detecting objects) and for electrocommunication." It could be possible that this is another form of locating living objects for the Xenomorph or at least a form of communication. Who knows.
@Y2Kr4SHM4N
@Y2Kr4SHM4N 7 лет назад
CrniWuk Like a shark. It would also explain how the xenomorphs are likely capable of differentiating human hosts from synthetics. I was surprised this theory wasn't in the video, I always felt this was one of the xenomorphs primary methods of detecting prey. No matter where you hide, it's likely to perceive exactly where you are. Note: it would also hint as to why the xenomorph warriors were able to cut the power in Aliens, and deduce exactly where the marines were in the complex. Outstanding hypothesis. Now all we need is a deck of cards.
@CrniWuk
@CrniWuk 7 лет назад
I would assume, that it is more a form of short range location though, considering the fact that air is not very good when it comes to conductivity. But yeah, as you say it would explain a hell lot of stuff. The larger the elctrical power souce the easier for Xenomorphs to spot it. Like power lines, large structures. As far as further ranges goes, I do think they might use echolocation, or somehthing else in combination with it. If they see something interesting, they get closer, if it has electrical charge (live), they will attack/capture/love what ever.
@Y2Kr4SHM4N
@Y2Kr4SHM4N 7 лет назад
CrniWuk Exactly. In all probability, the xenomorph as the perfect organism would host an immense array of sophisticated sensory perceptive capabilities. Perhaps that domed skull is like a giant transceiver full of many sensory organs. Whereby homosapiens rely on 6, they may utilize dozens, with Magnetoperception and electroperception being chief among them. The species could likely be sensitive to radio frequencies or microwaves. Remembering that the xenomorphs are no mere biological organism, but seem to be some ferocious hybrid of both the organic and inorganic. Not just a silicone-based lifeform, but biomechanical. Something purely... alien. For example, in the xenomorphs behaviour, we witness them retreat from danger in Aliens Special Edition as they attempt to siege the marines' Turrets in the bottleneck of the Hadley's Hope service-tunnel. Is retreating behaviour a primitive, simple pheromone reaction, like Great Whites retreating from the carcass of another of its kin, or the swarm mechanics of ants becoming agitated en mass at a threat? Or are they governed by a radio frequency transmitted amongst themselves (and in the instance of a Queen, from the tactical oversight of the matriarch herself? Like a special forces team, only with inbuilt communications technology, instead of comms.) If they communicate in this way, this would be a most efficient method for detecting Prey. Such a hypothesis also raises further questions regarding xenomorph intelligence. IE, in Aliens did they cut they power merely because they can "see" power (and the brilliant latticework of electricity supporting the complex) instinctively knowing to deprive their hosts of the elements of their environment they require. Or, are the xenomorphs innately intelligent, with say an inbuilt familiarity with technology tempered only by a fierce animals savagery. It's more interesting when you can't deduce exactly what they are. The threat is magnified by this factor of that which is not easily knowable. Alien Covenant will perhaps give us some answers, revealing that the Aliens perhaps are in fact a biological and artificial hybridisation of life and artificial life. Unnerving. Wholly familiar, and comfortable in any of their innate environments from a biological ecosystem, to our technological world, and perhaps even void. As Charlie Holloway says to David in Prometheus: "David, why are you wearing a suit, man?" David: "I beg your pardon?" Charlie: "You don't breathe, remember? So why wear a suit?"
@CrniWuk
@CrniWuk 7 лет назад
Yeah, why should Xenomorphs only use one or even two 'sensory' inputs. Good point. I wouldn't be surprised if Xenomorphs might even have the ability to actually somehow detect electromagnetiv waves, but not just like infrared or visible light, but the whole spectrum. Could you imagine that? One could actually 'see' radiowaves, gama rays, x-rays and infrared! I would also argue, that Xenomorphs are more intelligent as a swarm, who knows? Maybe they can put their input and informations together to form a swarm intelligence. Even humans do that in many cases, when we build networks of different grops, opinions and people working together for a single goal, where the sum of everything is more intelligent than one single beeing. As far as Prometheus goes, well I don't get my hopes TO high, I found the first Prometheus ... already lacking, even though I think it is visually a great movie and it had a lot of potential. We have to wait and see, I am glad that there is a new movie, but I want to see it first, before I judge it as either really great or bad. Hopefully it will be more than just a slasher movie in space. I mean when you look at it, the appeal of Alien and Aliens came for me mostly on what you didn't saw or knew and that the actors played normal people, the Nostromo crew felt like simple truckers in space, the Marines like 'normal' soldiers and so on. And that is what makes science fiction for me, having 'normal' people thrown in exceptional situations.

I had a college roommate who read the novelization of Alien, and said that was the answer there. Electroreception would have the advantage of being able to spot stationary, silent people in hiding. Which would kill the main game mechanic of the game Alien Isolation. But would make sense for a creature designed to survive in a vacuum when necessary. He did try to get back into the shuttle in the first movie. A perception like that would also be ideal for navigating in metal structures, being aware of power lines in walls to avoid them, moving through air ducts, and so on. An active field from the head could sense walls and so on in complete darkness, and communicate with other aliens at short range. It could also partly explain all the organics in the Engineers ships - they would be non-conductive and effectively "blind" the aliens if they got loose. Then again, a lot of this just goes back to Geiger and his artwork. It's a composite of mechanics, skeletons, darkness, insects, and feminine sexuality in a disturbing yet slightly alluring mix. Think of the xenomorph head as a 1970's Corvette designed by a cockroach and you hit three points. Stick it on a skeleton, paint it black, and you are most of the way to the original xenomorph. These are horror movies, after all. I just realized that a xenomoph attack is the exact opposite of a housecat. A cat will stay perfectly still and flick its tail to distract an opponent and lure it to attack the motion. Then when the other cat pounces for the tail, it hits from the side. A xenomorph makes a big noisy show with its face, then sneaks the tail around to stab or trip the person who is staring at it in horror. Also adds to the horror movie mechanic of the audience seeing the knife coming but the actor missing it. Trite but it still works after all these decades. It probably dates back to stage plays.

Being a perfect organism, I imagine it has many more senses than just the five we're familiar with. Giger said that the creature perceived by 'instinct'. I'm not entirely sure what he meant by that, but I figure that it meant that it sensed its environment instantly in any number of different ways. Originally, the carapace was considered part of its sensory aparatus creating a large surface area for stimuli to be received by the Alien from vibrations, light, heat, cold, pressure, electromagnetics, and bioelectrics. Mostly because the mechanical head was heavy, Bolaji Badejo had to bend down a lot and move forward with the head facing to the floor, but one can say, in canon, that the creature was doing that as a way to 'scan' its prey. In the book, Alien, the creature was not only able to see, but was able to see in vivid color since a green light fascinated it to no end!

the only reason you couldn't see the eye sockets in the first movie was because the thick glass dome made it hard to make out under dim lighting, which the film used frequently. James Cameron chose to change a few things around about the design for easier fast moving action scenes as opposed to a fragile glass prop used in the original. I personally like to think that the species scene in alien and aliens are separate but they have never gave a canon answer. AVP and AVP R were poorly written and directed. If you honestly think they were good then I respect your opinion but I strongly disagree.

I always liked the theory they came up with in the comics and used for the AVP games. That they sensed electrical currents like sharks and some other fish have. They also wouldn't need eyes to sense electromagnetic fields. Which would explain their ability to see in the dark, locate hiding prey, as well as their ability to see even cloaked predators. It also explained their ability to take out electrical generators and other systems. It's not intelligence but more a "moth to a flame" scenario with them being attracted to and attacking that equipment.

It probably also has "smelling ports" all over its body like many insects have, which they use for respiration and gas exchange, or maybe they just respirate through the skin like amphibians, as opposed to lungs that can decompress in space. Also likely that if a xeno has any pheremone sensors, they are on the body or on the inner mouth or upper nasal passage area, and the reason it moves that inner mouth in and out is to function like a snake tongue, i.e. move air over the organ that senses pheremones. I believe humans have a rudimentary pheremone sensor in the top of nasal cavity, so this would probably be synonymous with what they have. The whole topic is fascinating like no other movie "monster."

The original xenomorph created by H.R. Giger did actually have a skull visible through the front of its domed head, but was later changed as Giger and Scott both agreed that there was something far more scary about confronting something without a "face" which I agree with. As to how it tracks its "prey" there have been several times that its been hinted that it tracks both by echo location and heat signature like a snake - effectively using its inner jaw as you suggested along with other sensory abilities. The xenomorphs ability to also stay in a dormant state for long periods of time even in little to no atmosphere also hint at a reptilian type of sensing abilities. Again just my thoughts on this lolol but another awesome video and great debate question! Love your videos! Lady Anne ^^ö^^

Anne Boleyn The adult Alien in the first film always had a skull visible beneath the dome, that much was never rejected. Originally they were going to use worms inside the dome to resemble wriggling brains, but that idea was tossed. The Alien's concept began with Giger's painting Necronom IV, where the creature had large round eyes. Giger painted further concepts and eventually replaced the eyes with the dome in the design process, because he thought something without eyes was scarier. Once he moved from canvas to sculpture, he used a real human skull to build upon the creation of the head. So yes the eyes were removed while the designs were still on paper. The skull was never rejected, it'd be odd to do so that far into physical production since Ridley already approved Giger's latest design.

In that game, the Xenomorph can also see from behind, a mechanism created by the developers to prevent you, the player, from sneaking up behind the Xenomorph. They can see alright! There’s definitely eye sockets there and the original artwork suggests that eyes were going to be featured. I also prefer the entire skill carapace from the first movie design compared to the look from Aliens.

Man i could not agree more. The opaque/slightly translucent dome with the semi-visible skull behind it is honestly so haunting. To me it’s part of what makes the creature so terrifying and strange. As much as i love the sequel Aliens it did go a little overboard with the over-designing of their version of the xeno. I think they were probably trying to make it look more animalistic and “spiny” but in my opinion that took away from what makes the xenomorph so unique and what gives it that appearance of a great hidden intelligence behind that massive, opaque skull covering.

I’ve always liked to think that they have an alternative way of seeing that doesn’t require eyes whatsoever. They are alien after all, so why conform to the evolution of animals on Earth. My theory is that they have some kind of advanced sensing organ within their skulls, that senses the outside world rather than sees it with visible light. This sensing organ could explain the long and unusual shape of their heads, the fact they appear to see or sense things behind them and can see so well in the dark. Think of the way a shark can detect movement 100 meters away. If they’ve evolved or been created to be the ultimate warrior, it would make sense that they can see 360 degrees around them.
@brandonparson8821
@brandonparson8821 4 года назад
Maybe they have electroreception, like how sharks can sense the bio electricity in all living animal's within a certain range. The xenomorphs may have something similar to this so they wouldn't need eyes to see like us, and with their heightened sense of smell and hearing, they could track their prey in pitch black environments and through obstacles like walls (maybe)
@aaronmendoza2010
@aaronmendoza2010 2 года назад
Since they are adapted to survive in ANY environment (even friggin space) it makes sense they’d use multiple ways of seeing like using electroreception when it’s dark and using basic eyesight when their is light present
@Nemoticon
@Nemoticon 7 лет назад
I always assumed it's head acted like a massive sensory organ, possibly observing the world with electroreception like sharks and rays do (I think bees also do the same). Or maybe the dome covers a mass of compound receptors like those of insect eyes, which would give it an insanely wide field of view but not able to actually focus on one particular thing. Who knows, they may rely on hearing and vibration as well, to further enhance their ability to track and hunt. I also always thought their 'back-tubes' might be chemical receptors like massive nostrils, communicating with pheromones etc. Look to nature for the best methods of sensory input.

If I remember correctly, originally, the alien had eyes, but for movie purposes it was thought it'd be more terrifing if you couldn't tell if the creature was looking at you or what expression it had, so the suit ended up with no eyes but the fetus recording still had them. Also some skull models have sockets and some are solid. I believe they use pheromones.

Years later we missed out a shot from Alien where the Xenomorph appears to "look" at Jones whilst he's still in his carry box before knocking it asunder. Next in Alien Covernant; whilst most of everyone I've see hates on, it showed how the Alien saw in that film; a greenish film covered with botches that "swam" across the screen, and a fish eye lens affect. - Whether confirmed how it see's I'd go with this because it's Ridley Scots original creation. I'd rather listen to someone who envisioned it first than other people's views. (Yeah I can also argue H.R Giger made it therefore he should call the shots but, Ridley directed it, his vision, therefore his monster.) That aside, Alien Isolation, the video game, showed it can see, smell, hear and feel; whether to the same extent that we'd call seeing is questionable. In Alien 3 it "smelt" or sensed, I prefer smelling, the scent of a facehugger on Ripley's face and opted not to kill her knowing she was a carrier. Totally not for the concept it's inner mouth works like a snake's tongue, taking in information whenever extended, it was toying with the scientist, luring him away from any threat so it could attempt to kill him; unaware the glass was durable. That on-top, if it ran on other senses other than sight, it wouldn't of seen Doc though the glass; from what I'm aware, echolocation, electic-sensery, heat, scent etc doesn't pass through glass. But then it *is* a Alien.

in Covenant Ridley Scott has a few scenes where it's shown "via the alien's vision" and you can clearly see it sees through it's skull dome. In the original Alien film (1979) the xeno prop(s) had eyes/sockets underneath the dome which were originally intended to be more visible until the dome was made less transparent in a new design choice. You can still see the sockets though at various times during the movie. In the game Alien: Isolation (2014) which is canonically set after the aforementioned 1979 film the creature has these same semi-visible eye sockets which can only just be seen in certain light from certain angles.

Pheromones. I don't believe Xenomorph's actually see. As a hive species that have a collective direction (Queen's rule) it is most likely that they use the inner mouth in a similar manner that a snake 'tastes' the air around it. The sent would come from their saliva, determining friend from foe. This would also explain the wars between hives and lack of co-existence. Echo-location is a stretch because the difference in features, creatures, and location would make this impossible to keep constant. Plus the dynamics of using sonar based communication in tunnels made of organic matter (the xenomorphs generally terraform what they control) would be impossible. Not to mention atmospheric densities and an array of other reasons.

Thanks for putting this video together, I've been a huge fan of the franchise since day one. That being said, I recall in an H.R. The sockets seen inside the translucent dome were just organic in nature and served no purpose.

In AC Crispin's novelization, the whole head dome is described as a single sensory organ that gives the Alien a 360 degrees vision. In other words, they don't see in a cone like us, but rather in a bubble projected around them. This is somewhat acknowleged in the AVP games wherein the Alien's FOV is "bent" to allow the player better peripheral vision. Also in the same author's novelization, they breathe through the tubes on their back and they communicate with other Aliens by using their tail, which are capable of sending ultrasonic waves. The "second jaw" is actually described as their "tongue", which was the word HR Giger used in his sketches of the creature as well.

I seem to remember an account someone gave about their time talking to the creator of the basic Xenomorph design. When asked why he didn't draw any eyes, he responded along the lines of "It makes it scarier. This way, you don't know when it's looking at you." seemingly if not confirmed to be taking inspiration from the dark sunglasses worn by secret service agents that are designed to hide their eyes from others. When playing Alien: Isolation, I've been detected by the Xenomorph while behind a glass window despite being as quiet as possible. I can't really think of anything other than normal sight that would enable it to do that. If it had Infrared detectors, it should have been able to sense the player in a multitude of other hiding spots that it seems to have difficulty with when the player is silent (under grates, behind thin walls/objects, under desks/beds, 'hiding' in plain sight and hoping it doesn't look your way).

The one-sided mirror theory works the best for me. Although Giger intended the alien to hunt by smell when designing it, it doesn’t hold up when we see aliens move about in the vacuum of space. You can’t hear in the vacuum of space, and much less smell anything, so the idea of the alien’s eyes behind a kind of visor would explain why the alien at the end of the original film could almost find its way to latch back onto the ship after being ejected into space.

From an interview with H. R. It in fact doesn't "see", although it most likely maps its surroundings.

And surprisingly the Alien still manages to see through their camouflage and kill them. Anyways, since it is the “perfect organism” I think it uses a multitude of senses that allow it to track prey.

In some sources, notably the novels and video games, the aliens are shown to be able to "see" electrical impulses. Thus they can detect creatures via the presence of their electrical nerves. They can also see power flowing through machinery, explaining how they were able to "cut the power" in Aliens.

In one of your other videos covering Church’s research, he mentions telepathy; the giant round head of theirs is one giant frontal lobe.

Its been covered pretty frequently, in the games and the movies I think... The Aliens have an incredibly advanced form of hive mind intelligence that goes beyond traditional telepathy

I agree with the second theory. I was always under the assumption that the alien exoskeleton gave them a blind appearance but that underneath the surface there was a layer or translucent substance which enabled them to see (especially in dark areas) and that the outer shell was the protection for it, acting like a visor almost.

No idea if they're considered canon or not, but one of the novels goes into detail about this. According to the novel the Xenomorphs have a form of empathic telepathy. While they can't read our minds, they can sense our presence based on our thoughts, and can even feel our fear. One man in the book was overcome with rage and actually managed to intimidate a Xenomorph without any fear.

It seems that due to the reactions xenomorphs have when getting blasted with air (or anything not solid), that they use their senses more. It would make sense as a blast of air would disorient them and essentially cause a sensory overload.

In Aliens Resurrection there is a scene where you get a first-person perspective of the alien's vision. Anyhow, a good video, I always wondered how they got around so well. Moving from level to level like they know where you are. Something similar to echolocation combined with hormones, normal vision is most likely spot on, mostly... lol
