Sure have missed watching and sewing. Lost power due to winter storm here in Texas. No water because of frozen pipes since sat night. Sewing is what helps me stay happy and sane. Prayers for all is here in Texas. 🥲🥲
I have such great memories of my Grandma and Grandpa’s attic. There were 5 twin beds up there that were used for the grandkids when we all went to PA for Christmas and summer vacation. It was hot up there in the summer!!! We were teenagers and we had concerts up there with lots of dancing. So much fun and GREAT memories!
We don't have an attic. However, my grandparents had a colonial home from the 1700's in Connecticut which was originally a doctor's home. The attic was huge! Large enough to hold village dances. When you slept up there on cots, you had to look out for mice, bats and spiders- eek!. They had an old leopard skin rug named Uncle Charlie. Good times. I was difficult to clean out after they had passed away. So much stuff!
No attic in my house built in 1892. Cellar has a stone foundation and cement floor but really unusable. Thank you for the laugh about Gregg and the horses! As soon as you said horse, I knew what you were talking about. I'd love to do a churn dash block because I have two small blocks I tried years ago and for me that would be my choice. Thank you for all you do for all of us.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM! I imagine you don't have the tv anymore but glad you kept Tom. I don't have an attic or basement. They aren't common in Phoenix. But growing up, we lived in NJ and every house had both. Our attic was very neat but just storage. I'd go up some times and play with my dolls and look out the windows. It fascinated me to look down on the street even though it wasn't busy. It looked so different from up there. It might be fun to make a unicorn applique quilt. Even just the heads like your pins. Maybe you could photocopy one and enlarge it and make it a pattern.
We had a family farm in Leeds, Catskill Mountains. The farm was only used for summer vacations and other holidays by the whole family. It had a huge old house and many cottages with only a bathroom and bedrooms. In total 129 bedrooms. On Labor Day weekends some of the relatives would sleep in cars because there was no rooms left. The old house had an Attic. Oh so much fun and spooky stories from that attic. It had old furniture up there and was just a good hiding place for Hide and Go Seek. Good memories.
My vote - Churn Dash! There are lots of fabrics in your bundle that lend themselves to fussy cutting for the center of the Churn Dash. It would be fun, fun, fun❣️ My second choice would be the no HSTs block. Keep up the quilty excitement, and no attic ever in my 69 years.
I love Jessica Swift's lines. I have the horse and bunny print in a different colorway. Also have many of the prints you showed that I am using in one of my UFOs. Bright and cheery and easy sounds perfect for March.
When I was growing up, my Dad replaced our roof and made the new one higher, creating a usable attic. My brother and I were goofing around, taking stuff up there before Dad had a good floor installed. Bob pushed me and down I went, my butt going through the ceiling downstairs! We were laughing so hard, it took a while before I could extricate myself from the hole! No, Dad was not pleased!
YES! A quilt with NO half-square triangles. My kind of quilt! I’m just a little bored matching up the hsts in the heart quilt for Valentine’s Day! Ready to do something without worrying about triangles!
Pat you look very nice today in your pretty blouse and medallion necklace. Growing up our grandparents attic was so cool. It too had the staircase up to it. It was musty up there but it had windows to let light in, and yes, lots of treasures. The attic in our home was one I’ve never seen another like it. You had to go into my brothers closet and climb up a slanted part (over a staircase) to access a small door. Obviously it wasn’t of much use for storing things.
As a child my family lived in a house in Ely, Nevada that was built before 1900. My sisters and my bedrooms were in what was originally the attic. In the winter we would have ice on the inside of the windows and water would freeze in a glass overnight. One winter I was wrestling with my sister and broke one of the windows. My parents didn’t find out about it until the late spring when the ice finally thawed and the glass fell out. I don’t think they ever knew that we broke it, they just figured it was because of the ice.
I have a 124 yr old house with pull down stairs for the attic. There is only pieces of wood laying here and there to put boxes of holiday ornaments up there. You can not stand up in it but I have shoved many boxes of fabrics up there🌞
I started using glue sticks a while back. I use School Glue Sticks because that is what I had handy. They work great by the way. My hint is to press the binding before stitching it down. You won't even need the little clips. The iron dries the glue immediately and it stays glued down until you are ready to stitch it down.
Pat, you look especially nice today, lovely blouse/color w/ your glasses & your hair looks awesome too. Happy Birthday to younger brother, T.V. Tom! All of you have a wonderful day. And thank you Pat for your tips & patterns.
I live in Florida so no usable attic, no basement. I really wish we had a basement because I have severe quilting studio envy when I see people who have a whole basement to use.
I have a very large 2000 square foot attic and loft over the garages. I use to keep Christmas items up there but opted to put them in the basement. Right now there is a spinning wheel up there and nothing else. Maybe I could make a sewing room up there. You have me thinking.
Growing up in an old New Englander house would give me plenty of opportunities for fun in the attic! It was all unfinished wood and you would get splinters if you didn’t wear your shoes. I remember finding Santa’s stash there one year. The most fun was when my older sister took over part of the attic for a bedroom when she came home from college (could that be cause we took over her bedroom?!). One night a bat flew in the open window (no screens in the attic!) and got downstairs. I called for help and no one could find it...they said I was dreaming. My younger sister came in laughing at me and guess what swooped down on her! 🦇 Miss that house!
I haven’t had an attic since I lived in my parent’s house. It was wonderful though, especially when I got to poke around the part that my brother almost blew up with his chemistry set back in the 60s. Great memories!
In the 60s my sister and I had a bedroom in the attic. I loved it. Lavender walls so pretty. Plus my brothers were on the floor below us and the attic was "out of bounds." :)
I love the Churn Dash blocks & have wanted to make a whole quilt with them. I could handle THOSE HSTs, but myself would like something without them!! haha I'm also doing A Quilting Life's BOM & this last one was ALL small HSTs! Those fabrics are so FUN!! Oh my, those bunnies--I LOVE bunnies & those could be fussy cut into the centers of Churn Dashes :)
We used our attic as a playroom. Till it was finished for a bedroom my sisters used. One time my sister and brother were using a chemistry set and blew up something making a big mess! Fun times.
Pretty new block for Wednesday! I live in Los Angeles and my parents built our house. Our attic was sacrosanct. Nothing was put up there! Heaven forbid. My parents grew up in Minnesota and my mom law said it wasn’t fair that she didn’t have basement! No place to stash the stash..lol. No attic, no basement, so she stuffed stuff under beds, etc. Yikes!
Happy Birthday to your brother! No usable attic here but love the movies where they find family treasures in the attic 🙂. The churn dash is probably my favorite block but would welcome either “block of the day” like last year to help the wait for winter thaw/warm spring.
we had a Federal Style house when I was young. Very old house with stairs that went straight up to the attic space. My grandmother stored clothes and antiques up there. Then we found out the house had bats in the attic. When we moved from the house the stuff she put in the attic was left there when we moved. She never went back into the attack. I often wonder what was left behind.
What attic?? I have a flat roof house! My house is on a slab of concrete ~ I have no basement! I barely have enough closets to hide the skeletons! haha!
When I was growing up, my two younger sisters shared a room. Their room had a large closet with a smaller door inside on one of the wall. It went into the eves of the house. That was their play house. They would disappear for hours in there playing with their dolls and toys.
Your glue stick of the corner is an interesting idea! I use 1/4 inch steam a seam and adhere the binding all the way around - rather than have to fuss with pins and clips (I just press the corners the way I want them to go and put a clip on each corner when warm...removing when I approach the corner).
A Happy Birthday to you, a Happy Birthday to you, may you find Jesus near every day of the year. A Happy Birthday to you, a Happy Birthday to you, the best one you've ever had. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!
Love the blanket stitch on your binding! Any tips or things to watch for when using that stitch on a binding? How does the back look...do you match the bobbin thread to the backing or the binding?
No useable attic here so closets filled with storage. But my grandparents had a big old farmhouse with a stairway in a bedroom to a huge attic. I remember trunks, the old cradle & wooden high chair there and also her quilting frame.
I have an attic. It is where I store my Christmas items and other holiday stuff. It is a difficult spot but it sort of works. Remember I said sort of. On January 23, I was putting my items away I moved too quickly and hit my head on one of the beams. I saw stars and they were like moving comets. The bump on my head was huge. I could not even touch my head. Ugh brushing my hair was awful. Well I am happy to say the bump is going down, slowly, but going down. Needless to say I am avoiding all attics!!!!
I use the 4 at a time no waste method for the flying geese so I can trim them down. For binding, although gluing looks helpful, it's an extra step and time consuming that I could have already used to have used to sew down the binding so I don't do it 😊😉
I’ve never lived in a house with a usable attic. Hvac equipment has always been there, but no way to walk in there. Just as well...in AZ in the summer, temps can be 150 degrees or more in an attic!
Hi Pat! How many different fabrics will you use for the whole quilt? Wondering if I have enough in my stash. And : what no scarf??! It’s 10 below zero here in southern Ontario! That’s daytime with the sunshine!
The attic in my home isn't usable. It's just has insulation that's not covered with anything. BUT my growing up home had attics on either side of the eves that had lots of fun and interesting things including old trunks of things from 4 grown half-sisters. Ioved going through them as a child.( wasn't supposed to)
