What I find very impressive about most of these couture/demi-couture showpieces is how, despite their visual complexity, their base shapes are very simple. Obviously, there's the final dress shown here (from Fall'06) which was a simple trumpet dress. Part of me thinks that the veil could be a separate piece from the dress. The Oyster dress from Spring'03 has a very similar base shape, but the bodice and the flounce placement is very different. The closing dress from Spring'01 is a dropwaist ballgown. The bodice is made out of glass medical slides painted red and I imagine that there a stiff underskirt that the feathers are anchored onto. The closing dress from Fall'98 was simple bodysuit with a full head covering the with what looks like metallic fringe.

I remember a friend with a little extra cash went to the "hop" In 1962. Some of the higher end fancy dresses featured a rounded pulled under hem and they called the bottom a tulip style. I never spent money for designers myself but I have been watching fashions my whole life and I love sewing terms and fabric terms for some reason and you know it all.
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches Год назад
Tulip skirts are rounded but they do not bubble at the hem. They quite literally look like upside down tulips.

Thank you Zoe! And thanks fellow 'Hookers.' McQueen was definitely first on my list. I'm sure that first dress is a poly taffeta, as most of her clothes in taffetas and satins are 100% polyester, and I'm always making comments on social for her to stop selling plastic clothes. In the demonstration video they released for the massive gathered rose dress in taffeta, she said there were a few pieces of boning to keep the neck up, so I'm guessing they used that here as well.
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches Год назад
Hmm, what a pity. I'm not totally against polyester, but only when it's truly the one option, like sport performance fabrics, but this ain't it. Dang.
@freesiahevnosey6124
@freesiahevnosey6124 Год назад
how can you wear something like that in public? how can someone layer a coat over top that shoulder protrusion mess of gathers? my opinion only! do not come for me.
@christopherfeatherley
@christopherfeatherley Год назад
I'm not against polyester or synthetic fabrics, if used wisely. It's definitely hurting our environment, yes. But when luxury houses use it, it's intended to achieve something no organic fabric can achieve. A good example is the first dress: to achieve that stiffness in texture could not have been done through silk or an organic compound alone while maintaining a silky shine. It's very unlikely, as it is a runway McQueen piece, that dress will be disposed of in a landfill. As a designer, I appreciate the ability to create without having be limited in my options. I think the issue is mass production and synthetic fibres. Plastic, believe it or not, was once a luxury item only the finest houses had access to (early Shiapararelli is a good example, as she was the first to utilise plastic zippers). That's just my argument/perspective on the other side. I do understand the harm of synthetic fibres in the environment 😁 I just wished to give you a perspective when synthetic fibres are used in luxury/designer goods, it's pretty harmless and will likely achieve artistic value ordinary fibres could not
@patriciabernard8386
@patriciabernard8386 Год назад
Have there been improvements in the polyester fabrics? I think so but they still always have a negative.
@colmkirk8657
@colmkirk8657 Год назад
@@christopherfeatherley I know all about Schiaparelli, thank you. She didn't know the environmental cost of plastics, nor the extremely short lifespan compared to natural materials. Many of those early creations are denaturing and turning to dust in museum archives. As for the ability to do things natural materials can't, there are options. Silk triple organza is extremely stiff, for example, and very light weight. I'll include a link to a great video on a Dior piece. Furthermore, there is no need for it to be 100% polyester. That dress could be made of silk, with some poly horsehair inserted where necessary. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVMyOvHxtwY.html

OMG, love it! Thank you for making this video Zoe Hong, so many times one sees all these great designs on the runway and more often than not one can get overwehlmed trying to figure out how it was done. I think it will be great if in Design schools the teachers could do what you have done here of having students pick pieces from the most recent collections and go at it. However unfortunately teachers have to follow a schedule but it will be nice if it could be done(time consuming I know). Thank you Zoe Hong for all the fantastic content you share with us all in this great channel of yours!
