Two of the most common questions we’ve gotten in response to our viral
bit.ly/metalroofingcomparison video are:
1. When installing a standing seam metal roof, how do you get the first panel started?
2. How do you trim out the roof at the end?
Luke Wilson answers both questions today by taking you through the step-by-step process of
how we do it at Skywalker. We hope you find this to be helpful, and we’d love to hear any
comments or questions you may have in the comments below. Please like and subscribe, too!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I am a red seal sheet metal worker who has spent most of my career in the custom fabrication side, and now I am trying to break into the architectural install sector. I've been working in an architectural shop for 3 years, made miles of flashing, cladding, roofing, and gutter, but haven't installed much. These videos are an absolute gold mine for me to study the trade and gain much needed insight into proper procedure. Again many thanks, incredible work.

First thing I do is check where pipes are coming through to adjust the first piece so the seams miss most or all pipes. Then I chalk a line about 6 inches or so up parallel to the eave because most old buildings are out of square or wavey and the gables are rarely straight. Then I make another line perpendicular to the bottom line using the 3-4-5 method to indicate where I want the first panel to go. Having a perfectly square first panel will prevent sawtoothing.
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany Год назад
That is a good method, we do that as well.
@SteveThompson-li2fc
@SteveThompson-li2fc Год назад
@@SkywalkerRoofingCompany instead of 3-4-5, can you not just place one panel at the rake, then another panel at the other end of the slope and then pop a chalk-line between the two panels in order to get a straight run without saw-toothing? Here in South Louisiana the decks are never square, including even new construction projects.

As an alternative method we trim the 1st panel to width plus 1.5” (for 1” eave trim)and crimp/hem the trimmed edge to lock over the rake trim. Then use hand crisper to lock in place just like bottom edge of panel. Very clean look. No Z trim or screws in topside of the panel.
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany

I agree that is a clean look. I worry about the wind lift at the edge without a screw on the roof panel. Thanks for your comment

I was taught something along these lines, but we use a 10” clip system that has hooks on the rake edge, and bends up and over the rib of the starting and finishing panel to hook and slide the trim, matching the profile. Less material required using only 3-4 per rake trim (bottom, middle, seam/top). Uses less material and doesn’t require butyl and screws into the roof, not that this isn’t a good system 👍 If you’d like an image of what I’m explaining, I’ll be on a job next week and would be happy to share! ✌️

I’m really enjoying these videos as they are very educational and detailed for anyone looking to learn to install. That being said, I have the material for a standing seam roof but I feel a bit overwhelmed as I’m not a metal guy by trade. I was a remodeling carpenter by trade and have a grasp but not enough confidence to tackle solo. Honestly, I simply can’t afford to hire a roofing contractor as the material alone just cost me more than material and install 7 months ago. Do you know any helpers looking for side work in the Wilmington area I could hire for a day or two to help with the install? Thanks

Hello there, how do the boys flash two 45 degree sheets on the ridge, keeping the standing seam or ridge profile or prickle along the top of the ridge please? I'm looking for a 12 inch ridge cap but must have no welding folded to 45 degrees for architectural appearance, rather than basic flat ridge cap. Thankyou.

There are 2 options on the rake edge to lock in the bottom of the rake trim. You can screw a cleat with a kick out or drip edge with kick out to lock in bottom edge.

What sort of machine do you use to fabricate the metal?
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany

Wilson, the machine we use is a Schlebach Quadro www.metalforming-usa.com/schlebach/quadro-cinco/ this is one of the few rollforming machines that makes panels and profiles that are Dade County approved.

The panels, I believe, are made to expand and contract lengthwise along the clips. However, on the rake ends the panels are screwed down when the Z metal is attached so that they cannot expand without causing damage at the screw locations. It seems this is an inherent flaw. If I have a misconception, please help me understand. Thanks.
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany 4 дня назад
In theory you are right, but on the rake edge I would want permanent fasteners holding the panel down for high wind situations.
@sscra9693
@sscra9693 3 дня назад
@@SkywalkerRoofingCompany Thanks for the reply. I understand your point. I think perhaps slotted holes would be an alternative that would allow for expansion and contraction, but allow the screws to hold the roofing down and act like guides as well as anchors.

Doesn't the high temp membrane go over thye drip edge?
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany 3 месяца назад
Yes, it does in my area. We already had the underlayment down for other things and I just put it on top. If you're up north, it's common to install the ice and water across the eave and it would turn down the fascia behind the gutter to help with ice dams
@madjeepernh6834
@madjeepernh6834 Год назад
I have a question. Say you're doing a 100ft run, how do you make sure the first panel is square so you don't run up or down by the end of the run? I've snapped lines along.the ridge but that is not enough.
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany Год назад
We typically use a line at the ridge, but as you go across the panels can move as you screw them down. If you see it start to run off, you can either pull the top of the panel or bottom of the panel to stretch it and start to correct it. You might have to do that to several panels to get back square. Hope this helps.

Most codes and common sense require the eaves Underlayment go over the drip edge
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany

That is correct and how we do it, just put it over the underlayment so you can see how the panels lock together

Unfortunately this guy doesn't know any better the right way to start any standing seem application is you find the center of your roof so you don't end up with a narrow panel on the other end
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany
@SkywalkerRoofingCompany 4 дня назад
These panels can only run one direction, there is a male and and a female side. Therefore, you should start on one end and measure across the roof to see how the panel will end up at the end and adjust. Unfortunately, you've never personally done a roof like this or you would know that.
