#CombiBoiler Combi Boiler. Boilers, How do gas boilers work. Explaining how gas central heating boilers work. How a combi boiler works. This is going to be an in-depth video. I'm going to take the components out and I'm going to show you how they work and maybe help with fault-finding. Show you the different components in the boiler as well, from fans to gas values et cetera. Sequence, and also going to do a little bit of testing, so what I'll do is I'll show you how diverter valves and diverter valve head work as well. Combi Boilers.
combi boiler working principle, combi boilers explained, combi boiler sequence of operation
So it's got a pipe at the back there, and that pipe there goes into the heat exchanger and it goes round here and down here, and that will go round the heating, and when you run your hot tap, again, more or less the same idea. What you've got, the pump will run again, but what I'll done now, I'll just zoom in, and I'll just show you because we need to have a sensor that senses that you've opened the hot tap. So I'll just show you that now.
So I've just removed the pump now, so we can see that what we've got there, we've got a Hall Effects sensor there. We'll just take that off, and that, what that does is, as that spins in there, it sends a signal to there, and then that tells the boiler to work, so that's telling us that we've got a flow through the boiler. What I'll do now, I'll just go inside and I'll show you that on a live boiler, I'll show you how that works.
So at the back of this boiler here, we've got a boiler sensor, and if you see there look, it's just lit up so we can run the hot tap. Just turn the hot tap back off Luke, and then when we turn the hot tap off, we can see it's gone back off again.
So that's the Hall Effect sensor, and that would be on there, and then what happens is, your cold water mains comes into here. This senses it, this turns round, it gives like a magnetic field on here and that tells the boiler, tells the boiler to work. So that would be in there, so that's told the boiler to work now. So we've got cold water gong through here. Now the difference now is we wouldn't want to mix the central heating water with the water that you're going to have out of your tap, so we have to have another heat exchanger here. So I'll just show you that now.
So in the back of the boiler we would have what's called a plate heat exchanger, which is just in the back of the boiler there. Might be in different places in different boilers. But how that would work is, you'd have four pipes on there. So one part of it, with this one, it's the bottom one here, these. One part of it would have the central heating water going through, or the water from the heat exchanger in the boiler, and then the other side would have cold water going in and then it would transfer heat via this heat exchanger, and it would come out of this side hot and go to your hot taps. And what that has inside there, it has little plates. The metal doesn't touch each other, just loads and loads and loads of metal plates. It's a bit hard to show you and I've not got one, that's cut up, but if I could show you cut up, you could see, and what that does is, it doesn't allow the water to mix from one to another.
Sometimes when you've got a boiler that's ... the pressure's going up all the time on the boiler, and you've disconnected your filling loop, sometimes these could be split inside, and what that will do is it will allow itself to top up and cause problems, but that's not part of this video, but just as a ...
If we have a look at the plate heat exchanger at the back, that's where your four holes are. So there's one there, one on this side and then same on this side. And then what you need to do then, because we need to control which way the water goes, so if we have it on heating or hot water, we have a diverter valve here and we have a diverter cartridge. So what I'll do, I'll take that out now, and I'll show you how this works.
So that's your diverter cartridge out of the boiler. So when it's in the boiler, you can just clip that off, and then that comes apart. Sometimes tops of them pins there leak. Different boiler manufacturers use different methods of diverting the water, and also different methods of sensing the hot water. So I'm just showing you on this particular boiler. So you have a diverter head, and then you've got the cartridge. And what happens in that cartridge, it moves. There's a pin in there which I'll show you now. I'd like to thank Roy from because he just showed me a method of me being able to show you how, how I can show you this work.

Good Allen. May I add to simplify, as some comments indicate many did not get the gist of it. *On a Plate Heat Exchanger combi, which Allen is talking about:* ♦ The boiler has a main gas burner heat exchanger that produces heat and a separate DHW (hot water) plate heat exchanger that transfers heat to the cold incoming mains water, heating it _instantly;_ ♦ The boiler's main gas burner heat exchanger that produces heat; ♦ A pump pumps heat from this heat exchanger to the radiators; ♦ When DHW (hot water) is called by opening a tap, a flow switch is activated indicating flow on the hot water pipe circuit; ♦ A _three-way_ diverter valve moves to circulate the heated water from the radiators to circulate only inside the boiler casing; ♦ The heated water is directed to a highly efficient DHW plate heat exchanger; ♦ The plate heat exchanger has cold fresh water running though one end and hot system water from the main gas burner heat exchanger running through the other. The two waters do not meet, merely transferring heat from the hot system water to the cold fresh water; ♦ The plate heat exchanger heats incoming cold fresh water *Instantly* to a temperature suitable for domestic use; ♦ This will produce hot water infinitely, called _infinitely continuous,_ not running out of hot water; ♦ When the hot water tap is turned off, the flow switch indicates that DHW is no longer called for; ♦ The three-way valve moves to allow water to be pumped to radiators; *On an integrated gas heat exchanger/DHW heat exchanger:* ♦ The boiler has a main gas burner heat exchanger that produces heat with a DHW (hot water) heat exchanger integrated, which may be a long winding tube inside the main gas burner heat exchanger; ♦ A pump pumps heat from the main gas burner heat exchanger to the radiators; ♦ When DHW (hot water) is called by opening a tap, a flow switch is activated indicating flow on the hot water pipe circuit; ♦ The pump is deenergised preventing water from running to the radiators, while bringing in the gas burner, if it is not already activated.; ♦ The DHW heat exchanger heats incoming cold fresh water *Instantly* to a temperature suitable for domestic use; ♦ This will produce hot water infinitely, called _infinitely continuous;_ ♦ When the hot water tap is turned off, the flow switch indicates that DHW is no longer called for; ♦ The pump is activated pumping heat to the radiators, if the control system demands heat to the radiators;

Allan, excellent video the way you described make me very attentive as well as interested . I was searching for the clue for our boiler problem which started after fault in fill in loop stop function. Pressure in the boiler increased to 3BAR and safety valved throw water on the out side wall. Engineer visited, due to the displayed error code of the boiler he changed the pump, but boiler still make noises and pressure goes up and down which noticeable from the pressure gauge. As you briefly explained that might be faulty hot plate causing this issue due to internal damage. Funny thing is that boiler work about 50% of the fully capability. Hot water seems fine but when heating kick in than it become problematic. I guess hot plate may be damaged internally during this pressure surge. Radiator make funny noises due to water movement. Am I right to assume hot plate causing this problem? please give your expert opinion.

@@AllenHart999 I don't have any problems with my installs either Allen. It's just when you go in to service an appliance. Once the combustion chamber's open. You can sometimes see where the hex is blocked it's cruded and discoloured near the blockage. With installs, If the systems clean I still fit in a filter. If it's dirty a chemical flush and I put the magnacleanse on it for a short while. Gives you time to commission and do final checks, happy days 😜

Excellent video on understanding how combi boiler works 👍🏻 I have no hot water, heating is fine.. Real saga going on at moment 😥 I pay for BG homecare, Ravenheat RSF 820/20 combi. 2 B.G. service engineers sent, both said can't touch boiler if there's something wrong. 🙀 This is new, they always helped before.. Not qualified to help perhaps? ~ Finally the ' engineer ' visits, doesn't check why my boiler won't fire up when hot water is called for! Doesn't open the folding down access panel >Tried & didn't know how! 🙀 Decided within 5minutes I must need new 3-way divertor valve. ~ Thing is, my hot water isn't going to radiators like he said,, boiler not firing for hot water! Told me take 3weeks & they maybe can't get this part at all, hinting I will need buy new boiler! 😥 I'm sure it's electrical sensor like you showed? Looked & I can't see 1 like yours, mine is an older, but reliable boiler. ♡ Please give me your opinion on the fault, of untrained 'engineers' , possible electrical sensor,, not this valve that they won't be able to source. I feel a fool for paying such sums of money, so long, for their " home care " , for peace of mind.💜🐱♏🌲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

try to find on google your boiler model name and add 'service manual'. if you find it, should have pictures how to take apart the sensor, so you find where it is and how it looks like.

Thanks for answering @@nilsfrahm1323 🤗 They changed divertor valve, then it wouldn't start! What a saga! ~ It turned out the " real engineer" who came to fix it, after 3weeks ,, was going to give up, until I showed him the original manual ! He admitted he put wires back the wrong way to electric box inside it,, thinking it wouldn't matter! They all put me thru so much stress , I feel so stupid paying this monthly fee of £45 for "peace of mind" for 20years.. ~ They should replace boiler if they break it, then cant fix it >> No? Still havn't had my annual service - they r a total waste of time! Appreciate your input on what I should do.. Just cancel the expensive homecare I've paid since I bought boiler. Or insist on complaint procedure & replacement ?

Thank you for the tutorial. One question if I may. When the thermostat switches the central heating but the boiler is continuing on heating the radiators for an hour or more at times, which element could faulty? Central heating is activated on time, just when it comes to the time seating to be cut off it continue for some time.

Brilliant explanation with in-depth details. I was wondering if you could help me with my boiler issue. My bosch combi boiler supplies hot water only when heating is on (when I increase the temperature through controller). So what could be the issue? The issue could be with diverter valve or temperature sensor?

Great video thanks. I have a question about cold water flow to the boiler. My comb is very similar to the one in the video (Main combi) and I notice the white plastic filter on the bottom of the incoming valve. Does this also control the cold water flow rate into the boiler ? The water pressure and flow where I live is very high so I suspect the boiler is struggling to get a 35 degree rise at 11 litres min (HW).

Brilliant video Allen, one my best ones so far. Im just a bit confused when it comes to the heat exchange plate (square metalbox). Is the water already made.hot my the bunner before it passes through there?

YES YES the main heat exchanger heats the water and then goes to the smaller plate heat exchanger. Thanks.

Allen Hart so basically the heating water is always on? What prevents it going into the heating side in the summer months?
@mrasgar
@mrasgar 4 года назад
@@simonstones1918 I think it's only when water heating is required that the boiler water is heated up and sent to the heat exchanger.
