How does a gas pedal work? What happens when I push on the accelerator pedal? This video explains the mechanics of a gas pedal, which utilizes a throttle cable to pull on the throttle linkage, opening the butterfly valve within the throttle body, allowing in more air.

I wish they would of renamed it to an "air pedal", because explaining this to older people who are used to a gas pedal (carburetor), they just don't get it at all.
@jonfrost885

James Erikson for mechanical, technician, and engineers,, the right term for that s "acceleration pedal,, he just used the term gas pedal because its the common, newcomers can easily understand what and where is it, simplicity applied.
@MePeterNicholls

yeh, in the UK we call it 'the accelerator'

tbf air is gaseous :P
@jonfrost885
@jonfrost885 7 лет назад
the gas pedal is manipulating AIR for the engine's intake and the various sensors communicate with ECU to pump more fuel, hmmm... therefore the "GAS" pedal isnt manualy pumping fuel,, you just requesting to ECU to pump more and meet the right fuel/air mixture ratio.

Kent Patrick Parilla Same basic thing only difference is there’s always gas in the bowl so pumping the gas pedal back on older vehicles actually helped to start but in fuel injected cars pumping the gas pedal dose nothing at all

That's a good question, just comes down to chemistry. I hope to make a quick video on this eventually. Basically you go from C8H18 (or other hydrocarbons) + O2 + N2 and then you react to form CO2 and H20. When you balance it out, it comes to about 15 parts air to 1 part fuel.

The gas pedal is simply attached to a potentiometer, which when pressed injects more fuel. Diesels have a large band of air/fuel ratios for which they will work.

By allowing more air it increased the pressure difference in the carburetor, thus forcing in more fuel. But what you are adjusting by pressing the gas is how much air is allowed in.

Why do you keep calling the throttle cable "throttle wire"? Wires are there to conduct electrical signals. Cables are for mechanical actuation. It could be confusing to newcomers trying to learn from you. :)

The definition of a wire is: "metal drawn out into the form of a thin flexible thread or rod" Sounds fine to me. The definition doesn't say anything about requiring conductivity

Very nice video but may i ask you if the gas pedal is connected to the throttler body and at the same time the throttler cable? so the gas pedal is connected to 1 lever and 1 body?
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 11 лет назад
You are correct, but how much you open the throttle ultimately is what restricts the total amount of air coming in. Even if your cams open up the valves a huge amount, if the butterfly valve of the throttle body is closed, not much air will be going in (the car will not accelerate without any throttle).

What happens when you are at a constant speed and let go of the gas and don't press the brake pedal? How does the car slow down? Friction or are the brakes steadily compressing the rotor to thus slow down and eventually stop.

Typically diesels are direct injection. By pressing the gas pedal, you increase the amount of fuel injected (rather than allowing more air in. Thus, pressing the gas pedal decreases the A/F ratio, increasing power.

How bad is flooring the car when it's at operating temperature? I own a 2008 Cadillac DTS and i'm always seem to floor it a little too much haha. I would say I floor it about 4 times a day at least and some people say it does wear on the components but how much does it wear on the components? Some say it's good to floor it to get rid of excess carbon but just how bad is it to floor it at operating temp? I also baby it until it gets to operating temp only reaching max 2500 rpm usually under 2000 rpm until it's warm. -Thanks

Steve Car engines are pretty strong. Flooring it a few times a day at operating temperature shouldn't do any harm long term as long as regular maintenance is obtained.

So how did it work before the sensors? How did the correct amount of fuel get injected? Was there like a system that linked the gas pedal/throttle linkage to a valve or something that controlled the amount of fuel injected?

Carburetors can be dialed in to match the amount of fuel to the amount of air: Carburetors - Explained
@MUMS007
@MUMS007 10 лет назад
It wasn't injected , it was basically sucked into the engine. This was done with "The carburetor". These worked on a principle called "the venturi effect". The same way air flowing by the top of a chimney causes smoke to be pulled upward. Pistons moving downward , on the intake stroke , caused a vacuum. This vacuum was below the carburetor. When the Carb was opened , the venturi effect basically sucked the fuel from a reservoir in the carburetor. The reservoir worked the same way a toilet tank works. As soon as the fuel & a float dropped to a certain level, a valve opened up and fuel flowed in to replace it. It was primitive but worked very well

Well explained but I guess even at this primary stage, there should be a bit more in detail regarding negative pressures created in the intake manifold sucking in outside air 'coz nothing in this video explains what is actually making the air in. What one might construe from this is that a valve opens and air is allowed to flow freely which is similar to opening my house's door and air flows in but there's a force involved in an engine that is actively sucking in air.

Hi My van has a fault which I believe is the injector leaking. If I start the van after a rest period (about 5 hours) the van will start but I can accelerate for about 30 seconds. Its a common rail high pressure direct injection. I think because one injector leaks the rail pressure drop so the ecu doesn't allow the van to rev until it reaches the right pressure. So could you explain the fuel supply system. Is the fuel rail meant to hold the pressure when the van is switched off. I can hear the
