I find it funny that you need a drill to make the hole for the pump drill.
@SirTorcharite
@SirTorcharite 2 года назад
You can burn through it with controlled burns. Check the channel Primitive Technology for a visual demonstration of a pump drill made entirely from scratch using ONLY the woods around him. Man twines the plant fibers to make bow string. Makes friction fire to get coals to burn any holes he needs. He's making an easier way to start a friction fire though. So you'd have to imagine the added step of gluing a bit to the bottom. Exact same steps leading up to that though!
@xxportalxx.
@xxportalxx. 2 года назад
Well you probably would have another type of drill, this is a much later development, the first drills were lithic borers (a shapr stone held in the hand) during the Paleolithic 25k to 12k bce, then handled mocrolith drills were invented in the early mesolithic ~12k bce, the bow drill came out in the Neolithic ~5k bce, meanwhile the oldest evidence we can find of pump drills is from the Roman period which began in 27 bce (which means you had millenia of other drills to use lol)

@@SirTorcharite love that channel and a little envious. The challenge of having nothing and making everything, i wonder if i can get to making a forge and go from there from a mud hut to medieval house.

You can probably get a better result with a pump drill if you sharpen it directionally and just accept that one direction of movement won't drill
@appleairpods8527
@appleairpods8527 2 года назад
well it has to move both ways, you might as well sharpen both sides since they will both be touching the wood
@andresaofelipe
@andresaofelipe 2 года назад
@@appleairpods8527 yeah, but what I'm talking about is that you may remove more material in one direction with an approprately angled drill than in both directions with a diamond shaped drill. But honestly I'm grasping at straws here, it's a pump drill, it won't be fast, period.

I can't wait until people 100 years from now look at the technology we're currently using and question how we ever got anything done with the tools we use today... The same way I look with anxiety and admiration at the tools used 100 years ago. Thanks for the perspective!

@@davewojtowicz2246 I completely agree. Or even what technology we use has remained unchanged the longest. Like many people have gone back to shaving with a safety razor, that’s over a hundred years old, but many people swear by them, myself included.

I think people in ancient times noticed that their bowdrills they used to make fire had a tendency to bore holes through wood, so they took advantage of it and put stone and flint heads on to drill better

I feel like you could make a unidirectional pump drill by having the axel broken in 2 parts with unidirectional gears changing the direction the force when it turns the opposite direction.

Great video, though you could've made ot from stone if you really wanted to start at the beginning. Grind a hole in a stone from both sides until the hole is just big/small enough that it will hold onto the stick you use as your shank and a piece of flint or granite should work for a bit

@roseabee7503
@roseabee7503 2 года назад
As someone who's sensitive to loud noises, I'd always rather use a tool that's quiet but requires more work than something noisy that does the job in a fraction of the time. End product usually feels like it's worth more to me at the end using the quieter options. 😅

How and why are shorts related to that? (Honest question.) I immensely and immediately dislike these "shorts" because they don't function like RU-vid Videos - no scrolling of the video and a weird UI (on PC). I don't mind short videos, but I do mind this format. (I don't like rewatching the intro, I want to skip forward, even if it's just a few seconds.)

For the pump drill I would try to make a thinner tip, possibly with another edge or two. That should help to reduce friction and let it drill straight through

Could you use the pump drill angled to the side of the hole to wear down the sides. Then it could spin freely in stead of getting stuck.
