In the third part of the video How the switching power supply works, we are not talking about the UPS. However, this video is a logical continuation of the topic, about how to minimize the size and weight of the power supply. It is considered here, due to which it is possible to reduce the mass of the transformer winding. The main parameters that determine the mass of the winding are the length of the conductor, its cross-sectional area and the specific weight of the metal. But among these parameters, you can really change only the cross-sectional area of the wire. Of the existing methods that have practical application, finds only the cooling of the conductor in liquid nitrogen. In this case, a decrease in its electrical resistance is achieved, which allows a greater current to be passed through the same area. Or the same current to pass through a much thinner wire. The use of liquid nitrogen for cooling the windings is justified to be used only for high-power transformers in conditions of limited space, for example, on high-speed traction electric rolling stock of railways.
