to all those who are so negative. You need to understand that garbage compactors will only compact down about 1/2 the depth of the container. so as you continue to fill the unit with each cycle or use the more garbage you put in, the more compressed the garbage is, the first one or two cycles isnt a gauge of how compressed it will eventually become because the first use isnt as compress as later cycles with garbage will be. plus the unit we had in Florida had a setting that kept the piston down to hold the garbage down until next use. this would help to prevent the garbage from springing back and stayed more compressed. We had to pay for garbage pick up based on volume not weight so it did say us a good amount of money . we were able to cut our container size in half. we had ours outside on the side of the garage. their is a learning curve . it was well worth the price for us.

Thank you. I’ve always wanted a trash compactor. I buy my appliances local and they service all items they sale. I am a 65 yo woman and didn’t understand much of what you told us, but I’m going to get one of those. Or at least “put it in the list”.☺️

Friend of mine got one of these FREE, and in turn 'fixed' it by hard wiring all three switches, since one had failed. Key is a twist dial, on or off, and bidirectional use is automatic (the switches still work directional use of the worm drive). Stripped of panels, looks very basic, now works to compress 'mini' hop bales of their seasonal hops with a wood 'shim' that makes for better compaction of the hops (panel/press doesn't fit tightly in the box/baler, but does not). In summary, great unit, durable, often fails with switches, and presto it works fine.

I have a GE Profile MODEL NO. GCG1500LOBB that is fairly new. All of a sudden it got stuck in the down position. I took it apart and barely turned the gear and it worked perfectly. I put it all back together and it would just hum. Took it apart again and barley turned the gear again and it worked just fine. It will work if i just give the gear a nudge.

Anyone know how to test the centrifugal switch? I would like to test it with the meter like you show for the directional switch. Which leads to I touch to test? My compactor ddoes not reverse. It compacts, and then I have to either force open the drawer or On/Off the switch to get it to release and reverse. Not sure if is is simply the plastic main gear that has a radial crack which could allow it to spin on the chain gear nut and not stop and force reverse, OR if it is a bad Centrifugal Switch.

Excellent video, it told me everything I wanted to know. One thing about the machine in the video..... plastic gears..... really...... plastic, boy, talk about built to fail. Lemme guess, was this machine made in china? Maybe selecting a better machine should be a recommendation.

I know this is an old video/post but plastic gears are used to save the motor. The gear is designed to fail if the unit gets stuck. This saves the motor from burning up. So yes, it's built to fail, but it's a safety feature and actually cheaper to fix.

To remove the ram you must turn the large plastic cog toward you (counter clockwise) until the ram releases - all the way. After installing the ram you have to turn it clockwise until it seats and lowers This gave me a lot of problems cause I did not turn it enough.

We have one of these in our house it’s the 70s answer to waste management. The problem is when you go to pull the bags out the trash compactor it ends up all over the floor little bit of the bag. You really end up making a mess I need another bag end up wasting two bags in the end.

You need to use trash compactor bags. Either paper or plastic (what I would recommend). The plastic is VERY thick. They're kinda hard to find so once you locate a source, buy an extra package. I use Hefty and we go through one bag about every 2-3 weeks. One package costs about 4 bucks and lasts about a year so you really can't beat it! But we don't put anything that has food in it or you have major smells or will need to empty sooner.

leimdog omg, you don't put any food waste in it....lol Let me tell you, I live in a rural area, so I burn paper, boxes, etc. and plastic is all that's left...with food items....lol For some reason, I thought a trash compactor used heavy bags, close to cardboard and boxed it up after it was full...lol I mean, if new ones cost $1,000 + and they don't do that and you can't put food items in it....then it's a waste of money...lol. I'll continue to push the trash, garbage down in the bag by hand....lol....;-)

@@DebbieTomkoSUNSHINE You obviously have no damned idea about the subject in which you are talking. One, they make aerosols for compactors in a variety of scents, so residual food in a compactor is not any issue unless you plan to empty a pig's trough into the bin. Two, a true compactor bag holds its square shape when removed as they are several mils thick and lined with an inner layer of plastic acting as a moisture barrier which in turn fold over across the top to close the bag like an old school brown lunch bag. Three, this is not some Disney "House of Tomorrow" fantasy appliance, and will not take the trash out to the curbside for refuse disposal either.

Hey, if the trash compactor doesn't close it up, like in a box, after its finished...I can't see spending over $1000 for one....lol especially, like one person stated they can't put food in theirs. because it will smell....lol Someone needs to re-design these trash compactors....!
