DENJIRO: A yacht moves by catching wind with its sail. I have here a small handmade yacht. Let’s put it on water and blow wind at it. I’ll blow the wind from the side.
GIRL: It’s moving forward.
DENJIRO: It’s strange if you think about it. How is it sailing forward when wind is blowing at it from the side? I’ve attached wheels to a yacht and made a yacht car that runs on land.
NARRATOR: If we blow wind at the yacht car from the side, it moves forward.
DENJIRO: Now, let’s try blowing wind at it diagonally from the front. The yacht is going against the wind and moving forward. The mechanisms of how a yacht moves are related to lift. I have here a plastic sheet that’s curved like a yacht’s sail. I’m going to blow wind at it with a blower that has some string attached so we can see the wind’s movement. We see that the wind is bending along the shape of the sail. Lift is created as a reaction to the wind bending. A yacht is able to move windward by using this lift.
In relation to the wind that is blowing from a single direction, the yacht moves diagonally and against the wind. We change the direction of the sail multiple times. By doing so, the yacht is able to zigzag its way windward.
