Most adults assume that conflict involves physical violence and abuse. But it can also be emotional and psychological in nature. When a teenager gets involved in this, it can impact their emotional wellbeing in a way that carries forward well into their adulthood.
In this video, Aarti Rajaratnam talks about how can parents prevent a conflict from greatly impacting a teenager.
‘Knowing teenagers with Aarti C Rajaratnam’ is a fortnightly video column for parents, teachers, and adults who interact with teenagers. Each episode will share insights that will help the audience understand the adolescent mind and behavior.
Aarti C Rajaratnam is a clinical psychologist who has been working with children and teenagers for over two decades.

Very very very relatable, Mam I am literally crying after this coz it happens with me that scapegoat and all, the conflict between my parents started when I was 9 and today in 2021 am 13 but still that behavior. Am fed up, But next day still smiles and try to forget what happened last night, Nothing physical abuse but just verbal abuse. Both the parent to each other. I want to say to all the teenagers out there that guys stay strong and try that if one day you will have a baby then plzz don't do these things with him or her, love that child no matter what.

I too suffer a lot when my parents are in conflict. I don't know what to do and I am getting in the state of downcast each and every day especially when I have an exams they started to fight and I am facing many mental issues. I feel like killing my parents.

Relatable, I get so nervous idk what next step will be and I would be shaking so bad and my heart beats fast .... I feel little okay when my brother is around because I can't stop them even if I want them too ... And also mostly or always happens during my exams

Sometimes egos become so big that parents won’t resolve the conflict and it keeps on piling up resulting in worse situations and circumstances impacting everyone around

Wow well said mam, the every aspect u put up was true indeed!thank u so much And Rebuild the channel of communication was a very important point but pathetically we can't say feedback as it will turn around to us, as that s not the case in India mam as u said, as parents are too mature and we are been in a level to basically keep out mouth shut as they can't take what we say and we aren't the right person because in reality we can't make a change in parents life But the only way they have to mutually resolve the problem and they both would embrace the things they don't have yet rejoice for what they have, if that s the case everyone would be happy! Sadly that isnt and at the end they would quarrel for the things they don't see in each other to fulfill each ones expectations.!!! LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO FIGHT FOR THESE THINGS.. I HOPE EVERYONE WOULD HAVE A PURPOSE AND WORK UNTO IT SO THAT EVERYONE WOULD BE OCCUPIED AND AT END THEY WON'T HAVE TIME TO FIGHT FOR, RATHER WOULD LOOK FORWARD IN WANTING TIME TO SPEND TOGETHER!

Everything will be solved only if parents starts listening to their child, and stop believing that they're superior and they dont need to take any advice or suggestion from their child

Last year my parents fighting really mentally affected me.I never thought such a thing will happen but it did. They didn't talk to each other as my mother was very angry of my grandfather criticizing her.But my father was defending him as lets be honest my father also criticizes but does that to me.I am used to it anyway i couldnt take it this time as they started asking me to make choices for the other person.I mean if I wanted to be a parent , i would have become a teen mom.Wtf were the asking me so i started crying and my mom also got very angry and started crying telling me it wasn't her fault then my dad told it was his fault. But then the whole argument started again...........Wish i could speak my mind as then they might shut up for a second.
