Mike Gordon aka Mk.gee is one of my favorite new guitar players out there. He effortlessly blends familiar sounds and songwriting with modern DI guitar sounds and a totally unique distortion sound from an old tape deck that I've never seen a guitar player use live before. Mk.gee is truly original, and more people should know about what he's doing.

I think something to note here is that the Rainger FX pedal he’s using has a gate on it and distorts the reverb tail. When he digs in the gate opens as does all the distorted reverb tails. This, with the portastudio, is how it really can jump out of the mix suddenly and then come back down without getting all muddy (like you would with long no gated reverb tails)
@richardclark.
@richardclark. 2 месяца назад
i noticed that gate right away. they are fun and if you can get your head around them they do so much more than get rid of noise. i just find them so hard to master. its like i am not in control anymore and i lose connection with the guitar. it takes a special, patient player to use the sound on that track.

@galensjp01
@galensjp01 Месяц назад
@@richardclark. I think it really helps to wrap your head around the sensitivity/threshold of a gate. Gates open up because of sound/attack. Think less about them closing and more about what it takes to get them to open. Set the threshold so that it opens with a slightly heavier touch. Then it won’t just open randomly with everything you do but only when you’re starting to dig in. Also where the gate is placed is huge. After all your effects will make the gate closing sound so much more dramatic because it’ll kill all the effects that came before (similar to this rainger pedal). Hope any of that helps! Haha

In case anyone was wondering, its a Roland GK midi pickup ran into a Roland VG8 Guitar Synth processor. Patch used sounds like a nylon string guitar patch for "Are you looking up" and probably the "VeryEFX" patch for the tones from Candy and a few others. This is the lions share of the actual sound you are hearing. Its blended with the guitar, which is tuned Bb standard or something like that. Also, notice he is using flatwound strings....This is likely a 7 string flatwound baritone set with the high string omitted. Something along the lines of .065 - .015 gauge flatwound string set. Lots of things going on here that add to the sauce. The Tascam is almost inconsequential in my eyes. Its more a factor that he is going direct and not through an amp. Again, big chunk of what you're actually hearing is the midi pickup + Roland VG8 + very low string tuning.

He's actually running a roland vg8ex before his pedalboard throughout most of his last album and that's what gives it that violin quality you're talking about. Mk.gee's been playing with a guy named andrew aged and he uses that a lot too (it's the lead sound after the 2nd chorus in "I want")

As soon as I heard it I knew it was a tape machine! It's a well known trick down here in Argentina, early rock players used an italian made unit called Geloso G-257, a tube powered tape recorder, for getting distorted tones, as equipment back then was nearly impossible to buy. The actual tone was fuzzier but you get the idea.

The old "Let's make my guitar sound like a keyboard..." I had a similar experience with a band called Wire with a song called "I am the Fly" the sound turned out to be a keyboard ran through a distortion pedal. Now the song was recorded in the late 1970s and I was trying to figure this out 20 years later before any good sources were online. It took me 10 more years to figure out how they did it from a video. Still blew my mind.

Love his work with Dijon, now I must dig into this solo record! Part of the magic of their production and video style was that in-the-room feeling, and this has that too, but rather than these-guys-pouring-their-hearts-out-together it’s this-guy-letting-his-heart-out-alone… there’s an intimacy to it, and the tone switching between pristine and broken through dynamics alone gives so much life to that feeling. I don't even remember how I actually did it because the cassette deck sure didn't have 1/4" inputs, they were probably line level rca inputs! I had some kind of adapter and it just (magically) worked somehow. I was playing it thorugh my friends stereo system!! haha It's actually a really great distortion! His sound is not for me. The level of noise/hiss was unbearable. It basically sounded like my first guitar with a broken pickup going through broken pedals into a broken amp. But the tone you created was clearer/more discernible. Interesting idea to mess around with.

THIS IS THE CONTENT I’M HERE FOR ❤️‍🔥 also the tightness of the flanger helps get that sound vs the chorus. Luckily I’m also on a Midnight Oil kick so I bought a BF-2

I can plug into a million effects and see what I get too. In fact I have. People think it’s a synthesizer but it’s a guitar. So no it’s not innovative. Playing is good not great and the tone sounds like shit. Interesting or not.

It’s not a matter of liking the sound, it’s that this sound is basically novel for electric guitar, and that is difficult to achieve nowadays.
@MarcusALambert
@MarcusALambert 2 месяца назад
Not conservative. It’s just not your style and that’s okay. This world would be boring if we all liked the same things and all music sounded the same. What I do love about what Rhett is doing is he’s shining a light on artist that a lot of us have never heard of. I live in Philly and the music scene here is a lot of neo-soul/jazz/r&b. Because of this channel I now know about people like Ariel Posen and Joey Landreth.

It just sounds like one of the weird fx on old multi units, that never get used, because it sounds unusable. He acts all coy in the video, like the Tascam has nothing to do with it.
