Classic car dealers often offer SOR - Sale or Return - or commission sales, but what does that mean and how does it work, and is it worth it for the seller, buyer and dealer to do?
Ive sent the Rover 75 to www.stonecoldclassics.com this way so lets find out

Obviously I don't know or share any sentimental value with the cars on the fleet, but from a brief outsider's perspective I don't think this 75 should be the car to go...

I understand your reasons for selling, but I think I'd have stuck the 75 in the Barn. If I had the space in my garage I'd love to have bought it. It's a beautiful example. I can't imagine there's many better out there. Definitely an upcoming classic.

@@timprice5I don't really have any affection for the Volvo, to me it's just a huge fuel hungry barge that never goes wrong (aka doesn't make any content for the channel) and takes up alot of space too. I really want to see the other cars fixed up too like the tomcat, the Austin mini etc.

Much harder selling cars privately these days, as buyers seem to want the comfort blanket of a dealer to back up their purchase. In reality on a car of that age, buyers still only have the Consumer Rights Act (which applies for 6 months) to fall back on unless the dealer is prepared to warranty it themselves. Lovely as your 75 is, its not a 'one off', due to its mileage and condition, lower than some and better than others but there's equally as good 75's out there for a lot less money than you've been asking. You Tube 'status' should have no bearing on the price either, it doesn't make it a better or worse car. You're open and honest about all your cars, a very 'warts & all' channel, your detailed videos show up the bad as well as the good.

I love this RU-vid channel, I'm in Ireland, we have a website called DoneDeal, & there is a 2003 MG ZR (Rover 200 based) in dark blue for sale for €750! It has just under 130,000 miles for anyone who is an MG enthusiast. Just passing this on, for anyone who loves a project car.👍🏻

So a few unanswered questions….how do your costs compare with you advertising privately or a WBAC sale? How long does the dealer advertise it for before throwing in the towel? At what stage does the return happen- clearly you can’t change you mind straight away.

It's sad to see the 75 go but without doubt it's a future classic. I like the way that you're not 'too' bothered if it sells as you'd welcome it back but I appreciate car storage etc things have to move on. I'm also surprised that there has been little feedback on Beryl the Beetle, a lovely car that.

Two years ago, I bought my garage queen NC MX5 from a Dutch stone cold classics equivalent here on the mainland. Paid top covid dollar back then obviously, but 20k clicks later it actually hasn't lost any retail value and some of her litter mates have started to come up with somewhat unreasonable prices.

As the owner of two 75's I too will be sad to see it go but realistically, how much further interest would there have been for it on the channel - was there really much more you could do to it (content wise)? It certainly was a lovely example though, and it should end up with an enthusiastic new owner who will look after it. Onwards and upwards, maybe just buy another one...

The K series engines are fine if you fit them with the metal gasket, for some reason rover put a cheaper one on, which generally goes around 50,000 miles. However the metal one is only like £5 more than the cheap one and the metal one does not generally blow. I used to buy mg's and rovers cheap from auctions with gasket problems, skim head, stick the metal one on, job done, reliable car.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering 8 месяцев назад
I'm sorry I have to disagree on that one MLS gaskets are only appropriate if the block has been rebuilt and the liners are equally above the surface which pretty much all K-Series engines are not. In most cases that gasket will weep coolant and fail much more quickly than an original Elastomer gasket (which are have higher quality beading than the originals) which will take out the unevenness of the protruding liners or even almost non-protrududing liners. These are the two choices but the MLS gasket you speak about is now known NOT to be the one-size-fits-all solution it was designed to be, in fact like I said only the minority of k-series would benefit.
@chriscowey7464
@chriscowey7464 8 месяцев назад
Odd, I have had a variety of mechanics recommend them over the years. I am not a mechanic myself and not dealt with k series cars in about 10 years, so maybe the info has changed since then. (or maybe different engine sizes play a part, or simply people did not know how reliable or not they were at the time). I know a couple of people who still have them one with a rover 25 and one with a mgzr both 1.4's that are they are still running fine well over 50,000 with the metal gasket on. (I also had one fitted to my 1.8zt, but it got stolen shortly afterward so no idea if it would have lasted on there lol)@@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering 8 месяцев назад
@@chriscowey7464 I have known instances where the MLS gaskets last longer than most (which is not a long time), mechanics in all honesty don't get to see if their choice of an MLS if successful or not, they just base the success as "the customer hasn't come back in 6 months" - which rarely happens unless something huge happens. MLS gaskets fail prematurely in the longer term than a few months but aren't a great solution. 10-15 years ago It was touted as the "big all-in-one" solution to HG failure but that was when nobody started making Elastomer gaskets of much better durability (i.e. better quality seals) than the originals. In the last few years the quality of elastomer gaskets have improved and failures when the job is done well is next to none, MLS is now the 2nd best option in 95% of cases. I reckon there's a good chance both those examples you've spoken about will slowly "weep" coolant in the corners of the gasket, very common on the MLS unless very very lucky. Which is very possible, but it is more lucky than good judgement with the MLS.

You need to sell. I've got to do it with my old computers that are just taking up space. It ain't easy. You're also going to have to be hard about some of the projects. The Crown Vic obviously needs to be finished - you've poured too much emotional energy into that. But you will probably need to be realistic about the ones you're not going to get anywhere near, a bit like when Ian Hubnut realised the Oltcits were fated to sit around forever if he didn't move them on. I can see parting with that lovely Rover 75 is going to be agony though.

I’m no lawyer, but I know you have statutory rights when buying from a dealer. You can not sign away these rights. The dealer can get you to sign anything he likes. However you drive the car away and the head gasket goes in the first month , he is responsible. I’m not sure trading standards would agree with the dealers blasé attitude to excluding himself from responsibility.
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 8 месяцев назад
He knows the law and his responsibility, and I know he always goes the extra mile for customers, however the law is that the defect had to have been present when the car was sold, and HGF is a thing that happens, like a puncture
@jamesm90
@jamesm90 8 месяцев назад
As much as it may seem rough for the dealer sporthatch above is correct, a major failure such as HGF would be the dealers responsibility for the first 6 months (not three months) as this guy stated, that's why you pay over the odds to buy from a dealer, otherwise you may as well buy a cheap private sale car.
@timprice5
@timprice5 8 месяцев назад
@@furiousdriving absolutely sure that he would look after his customers. They have been great with lending you various cars so I have no doubt they are nice people. However, according to the law its up to the dealer to prove the fault didn't exist at the time of sale, sadly for used car dealers. It would be a sh*tty thing to do as a customer knowing their reputation for HGs, but if you were being difficult I don't think SCC would stand a chance at recourse
