I have become a fan of shade cloth. And will be using it more this year. It is such a game changer. Just have to add that right now we're vacillating between too warm (80+ days) and too cold (overnights in the 20's projected this weekend). Trying not to whine but this Midwest weather yo-yo is driving me crazy. Great vid Gary - thank you.

I have a shade cloth over my broccoli and cauliflower. I have used the ag fabric/row cover/frost cover that is more thin over my radishes and spinach. I use metal binder clips and clothes pins as well, both can be found at the dollar store. We have had very similar weather here as well. I have found that it is helping if after the sun goes down to water my cool crops with the cold water a bit. It cools the soil back down in my raised beds. I was able to harvest some collard greens, radishes and kale today! We are expecting 32 degrees at night this weekend! Definitely keeping me on my toes! Thanks for sharing all of your ideas for what can be used as shade cloth. Definitely helps!!

Thank you for a timely and informative video. I recently bought a bolt of shade cloth and Ag fabric pins and I am looking into how best utilize them. Last autumn, I made a form of experimental DIY custom sewn low tunnels from medium Ag fabric and hula hoops in a Quonset hut shape. I was able to extend my season for autumn cool weather crops by an additional 10 weeks and get bushels of bonus crops. The same setup is about to go in to protect spring cool crops.

Thanks Gary, this may be a game changer for me. I can get fiberglass screen for windows reasonably priced and use that on my raised bed for the broccoli, and the spinach and lettuce bed. I never knew you could slow down bolting leafy green vegetables so this will come in real handy. I used your potato planting video as a guide today and got my 24 foot row of Kennebec potatoes in. The skunk found it before I planted however and dug up a lot eating grubs. But, I put out tuna cans filled with ammonia and he barely scratched anything, and tonight in addition he has crushed red hot pepper to snort if he comes back, lol.

The fibreglass screen may work as shade in the short term and medium term but as it starts to age you do not want small particles of fiberglass in your garden bed.

Go to your local concrete building supply co and buy a roll of 150 ft long of the concrete re- mesh 6x6 sq pattern .You will need a small bolt cutters to cut..And cut them 6 ft,72 inches. Coil then to make 22:inch chages ,,so to make some real tomatoes chages,,5 ft hight x 22:inches diameter. ,your children will used them ,,very tough wire and strong for your 6 ft high tomatoes

A little confused. You say to keep the soil cool in the spring? I use it to keep my soil warmer for peppers, tomatoes? So just cool weather crops in the Spring?

It's relative to what the plants like. Cool crops need it to cool down to let's say 70 degrees. Warm crops like 80 degrees soil but don't like 110 degree soil. So temps can go beyond what they like. One you cool from 80 to 60 and the other you cool from over 100 to 80. One way to look at shade cloth and Ag Fabric are as temperature moderators in the form of a thin blanket/cloth. They help to create closer to ideal situations for plant growth. Consider how an umbrella or shade structure is cloth- but helps you stay cool but yet a light cloth ( ie clothing or throw) helps you feel warm. You want to work specialty cloths to keep plants in comfortable growing conditions. ( ie warm or cool).

To oversimplify- bolting plants are pregnant ( ie going to seed propagation) and you are asking them to be less pregnant. They had to go through a few stages of irreversible plant development to get to that stage.

Gary do you pull your shade cloth for when partially cloudy and only leave on when full sun higher temps? I’m in the low 60s post rain, partially cloudy, with some full sun the last few hrs before sunset. Do you recommend taking it on and off depending on temperature or just leave it on until harvest? I removed them during the rainstorm so everything received a good natural watering.

Yeah for full sun and higher temp days, I use it. If its just 1 day I dont worry but when you are getting many days of high temps and sun, thats when I would use it. We are back to 60 degree days and may shade cloth is down. Gary, i’ve purchased each size of the cells you offer on your website. Last year I used all the small ones, and had a lot of potting up to do. This year I started peppers in both medium and large cells. The peppers are approximately 8 inches tall now, at what point will they become root bound and need to be potted up or planted out? I’m zone 7A so I don’t think we’re going to get any more frost but we have had temps in the 40s the last couple nights. I want to plant the peppers with the tomatoes, May 15ish, but the medium cells may be too small to wait that long? I think the plants in the large cells will be fine, I’m trying to avoid potting up because of space issues. What’s your experience with the medium cells?

Pop them out and look at them but now it's a matter of timing. Next year start a little earlier or later to get them to peak size. However, a little coiling wont hurt them. You are probably close. If you keep them fed, you can extend the time the stay in the cells.
