How Does Solar System Busting Work In Dragon Ball Z?

Considering how big the solar system truly is, that is quite the feat To give you a scale: The distance between asteroids in the belt is so large, the chance one would crash into one is 1 our of 10M

The problem with using solar system-busting as a feat is because almost all said solar system is in one place it's hard to assess how impressed we should be. Blowing up the sun or a solar system-sized explosion take significantly different amounts of power to do, but they technically both count as solar system busting.

Vegeta destroyed a planet, Roshi destroyed the moon. I heard Goten could blow up Uranus.

my interpretation is that if cell's kamehameha were to detonate where he's standing, the explosion would engulf the entirety of the solar system. i imagine the planets and sun would be like dirt being picked up by a broom as the explosion expands.

I remember there was this dbz game only in japan that depicted what the solar Kamehameha would do. Basically after presumably overpowering Gohan's the beam would expand while continuing into space. And the beam would become so large that it would engulf every planet and eventually the sun itself. Thus incinerating it all.

The solar system is really really big. If we assume Cell means all the way to Neptune (which is extreme lowballing bc the actual edge goes thousands of times farther that that) Neptune is 29.9 Astronomical Units, or 4.5 BILLION Kilometers away from the sun. If he really is only a couple hundred thousand times stronger than Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga, he wouldn’t get halfway there. He definitely means the Sun exploding in a chain reaction to destroy the solar system.

My head canon has always been a base explosion of some kind with ripple effects. Sorta like a bad earthquake causing a tsunami somewhere else. The chi blast would surround the earth and implode it only to spread to every other planet wiping it all out. At least that's how I always imagined it if Cell had won. I would wonder if Cell could outfly all that but we know Toriyama didn't think too far ahead with concepts like this 😅

I’m guessing his Cell Jr.’s could visit all the planets and blow themselves up just because. He didn’t even need to blow himself up.

Now regarding this topic, since cell would likely destroy the solar system by destroying the sun, causing a supernova (although he has way more than enough power to obliterate it at once ig), recently, those who've read the manga know about the fact that Moro who after absorbing Merus's angelic energy got swelled up to the point that he was literally going to blow up the entire Galaxy!!! And a solar system is a speck of dust compared to it! Also, considering how giant even a galaxy is in Dragon Ball, their cosmos is at least a dozen times bigger than ours!

It defies some logic but I suppose it's just to make Cell's major power up more impressive. You could've also used the next villain Kid buu planet busting abilities. After all he is indeed a rehash of what we've already seen with Cell, a regenerating being that was created by a evil magician as opposed to a scientist. He fulfilled Cells purpose to going from planet to planet and destroying it if there was nobody there strong enough to challenge his perfect power... you just gave me a burst of nostalgia bringing up the Cooler reference. I love The Return of Cooler as well.

Realistically I always thought cell solar power Kamehameha was just his version of a super Kamehameha with full disregard for any life in the universe

You see it in Super when Goku Black tries to finish off Goku and Vegeta with a blast that doesn’t even look city level, but you see it first when cell tries to blow up the planet with this huge wave and Gohan overpowers it with a much smaller one. It’s attack potency I think.

I always assumed they could blow away the solar system a while before that, but it might be a matter of pure distance -- making an explosion big enough that the sheer size reaches the entire solar system in size. In that case you'd have to calculate how much destructive power you had to output to do that, maybe it is so much higher than a planet that it actually does take SPC to do it.

I've always just assumed Cell meant that his attack was so powerful that it would have more than enough leftover energy to vaporize any and all other planets in its way.

Before I even watch, its funny you made this video. I was thinking of commenting BS when I heard you say it on a previous video, but then I gave it some more thought. If Frieza had the power to casually destroy the saiyan world, I could see a powerful being gathering enough force to send a concentrated blast through several planets lined up.

About Vegeta to compare with Cell, I don't think he could destroy the planet, to me he was showing off his power like the prideful prince of the saiyans, because if he could do such thing, he didn't have to be scared of Freezer. The emperor was the only one back then who had such power, that's one of the many reasons many in the U7 feared him. Vegeta maybe had the power to destroy the surface of Earth, damaging a lot but not destroy the world.

Given how Master Roshi annihilated the moon and Vegeta could destroy Earth, and then scaling to the insane power jump to Cell, I always figured he meant: He could fly out WAAAAAY far away from the Solar system and then fire a Kamehameha SO wide that it would literally blow the entire system away at once like dust, leaving nothing. Now, the Solar system is unimaginably wide, but Cells power is so too compared to Vegeta way back when!

Its mathematically feasible actually . To destroy the moon, Master Roshi needed about 139 power level at least . ..And the moon is 1.2% of earth's mass , so to blow up the earth , you'd need about 81 times more power to destroy it ,leading to roughly 11.2k of power levels. And its actually close to what the guidebook el manga legendario stated ,that to destroy a planet ,one would need 10k . So to destroy the solar system , you'd need to be able to destroy 333.3k earth masses ,leading to a power level of around 3.7 Billion . And considering the escalation of power from the Saiyan to Namek saga ,from a thousand to millions , cell being in the billions isn't far fetched either . On top of that ,cell casually was powering up that attack and amped up it during the beam struggle several times ,which easily makes him multi solar system level, say a stretch of 5 times minimum ,hence 20 Billions maybe.

One thing that's interesting about it is the fact you can argue if the DB universe was as big as ours (which no, it's way bigger...) then you can arguably say Cell at his strongest is multi-galaxy at the very highest, low universal and even in DB he should be capable of galaxy level feats since just first form Frieza could destroy planet Vegeta in one attack casually, which is arguably dwarf star level power and Namek's mass is similar to Plant/Vegeta's so you can just imagine how much power Cell or Gohan could theoretically put out at that point, if Cell truly is equal or close to Dabura then you could probably justify him being at the very least a galaxy buster, Majin Buu could casually do it and Dabura is stronger than Gohan at that point (aside from rage boosts), Goku and Vegeta should also be there too.

the most reasonable way for this to happen would be sending a blast at the sun and destabilizing it into a supernova if universe sandbox is to belived it could be acomplished with roughly the energy from colliding with a jupiter sized object.

Its simple, its dramatics and simplicity. If cell said he would destroy part of the solar system, it doesn't ring the same significance as saying he would destroy the earth. It requires a power level of 10k iirc to blow up planet vegeta. Plus you dont need to blow up everything if the earth is really all you need to destroy. Given how huge the solar system is compared to earth, a power level to destroy the earth (1k) compared to over a billion actually sounds logical as a comparison

I’ve always thought a ki blast would just keep goin, destroying everything in its path until it runs out of power. Or do like Vegeta did against Buu, and send a wave in all directions that destroys until it dissipates.

Not sure if its relevant or if anyone remembers but there’s a scene in the anime where Freeza throughs a really concentrated energy ball at Goku whose getting crushed against a mountain; Goku then simply kicks the energy ball into the sky, sending it into space and destroys a bunch of surrounding planets. I just thought that was a cool scene showing raw destructive power from both ends

Cell may have meant it differently by saying now I have enough ki to destroy the solar system but he very well could easily destroy much more but that’s all that’s around the nearest vicinity.

personally, i believe that everyone who gets powerful aren't actually getting physically stronger but mentally stronger you can see how people like cell, goku, and freiza use physic powers, and how goku takes major damage from freiza force weaponry the reason none of them are as extreme as kid buu and just blow up everything is because since their physical strength is negligible to their psychic power, it has to be honed very carefully if they decided to just blow up everything, that would also just blow up themselves since you need to carefully control the chi in order to not die in the process of using it this also applies to how beerus and goku can fight despite them being easily universal level destroying fighters, they need to focus and control their chi so 100% of it goes into the enemy, not the surroundings you can even see this in the beerus vs goku fight where after getting used to fighting with that level of power, goku is able to focus the energy that was destroying the universe into beerus this might even be why goku and vegeta slowly go up in power, when you have forms that make you thousands of times stronger, it's going to be jarring going from 1 to 10000, and since not controlling your chi = death, they need to be very careful even if they aren't fighting anyone powerful

I had this argument recently like someone when people say solar system level or galaxy level what do they mean exactly? Like are yoy destroyinf everything in one move or traveling through space and destroying everything. Because I feel like those are two completely different things

I think that when it comes to destroying something " in one blast" distance matters or at least factors into the equation, 10k = planet bust) (5-10 billion = solar system buster) (10^6 = galaxy buster, and so on with that ratio of battle power to destruction capability and all of this considering you only need a power level of 400 to destroy earth's moon, 200 if you can use the Kamehameha ,100 if you can use the buff state with the Kamehameha

It would be interesting to see hit from super use one of his time skip type moves to freeze an entire planet in place for enough time to pass that another planet or a moon crashes into it, destroying the planet that way. It could also be cool seeing him use that same technique on a single fighter or group of fighters and make a Star crash into them. Things in the universe are moving an insane speeds.

In the realm of dragaonball, If Frieza was capable of blowing up a planet in his first form then i believe cell's kamehameha had the energy to destroy a solar system or multiple planets in a row. But you cant try an apply real science to this sorta stuff or think logically about it because it isnt logical. Just like you couldn't use science or math to explain how superman could bench press the earths mass for five days on a machine! its just the way these writers explain how strong or powerful our characters are.

In terms of pure mass, it's not as impressive as it sounds. The sun is 99.98% of the mass of our solar system, so if you can destroy a star you can destroy the mass of a solar system easily. It's only a matter of actually hitting everything, since the solar system is so spread out.

Cell probably means without stopping to rest, realistically it doesn't take all that much power to destroy a planet if even Vegeta could destroy most of the ones in their solar system with 1 shot. Even roshi would be able to take out planets with several in dragon ball and would no doubt be more than enough after the tournament of power in Super. And you're overestimating vegeta's max gallick gun power, you put him on close to par with Zarbon instead of being on par with Dodoria.

Since you said you're considering this in real life terms, it's worth mentioning that even if the attack travels at lightspeed in every direction, it would take anywhere from six months to two full years (depending on what you consider the boundaries of the solar system). And then congratulations, you've destroyed mostly empty space and a few uninhabited planets. Cell's Kamehameha is only moving in one direction, so I think his best chance for mass destruction would be to blow up the sun (which would still take about eight minutes in real life). Whatever planets are left would just drift off into interstellar space and freeze.
