Hey, love the video. Just a couple of quick questions from a UK fan if possible? Does the draft only include rookies or are there experienced players in there too? Are all draft picks paid the same amount? Or would it be more beneficial to the rookie to get picked by a certain team so they get more money for example? What if the player does not want to play for that team? For example they don’t want to move states. Thank you Nathan

Hey Nathan, all great questions so thanks for reaching out! - Yes the Draft only includes "rookies" but a rookie is essentially anyone declaring for the NFL draft who has not played in the League before. So technically you can have a player that is in their late 20's be a rookie and still be on the draft board, as oppose to the 21-22 year old that's more common. Experienced players are for Free Agency. The only time experienced players are ever drafted is when the NFL expands its league with a new team and holds what is known as an Expansion Draft. - All draft picks are NOT paid the same amount. There is a perk/bonus for a player going into the 1st Rd that's annotated in their contract but unfortunately, not every position is paid the same. It really depends on the franchise's investment in that position but also the market value for that position. Typically Quarterbacks are paid the highest across the board. But it all falls under the salary cap so teams have to budget accordingly. - It has happened in the past on where players openly state that they WON'T play for a team if they are drafted by them. The most famous example is by a player named John Elway on where he didn't want to be drafted by the Colts who had the number 1 overall pick in 1983. It doesn't happen often but has a couple of times in the past. Thanks for watching and reach out if you have any other questions! Hope you learned something new 😎

Thank you so much for the reply, really helped me understand the draft. I think the draft is the most confusing part of NFL for us British folks.

@LurksLessons

@@hyporexx759 that they do! The only time it changes is when a trade had occurred in where a team moves spots. Aside from that, the original draft slots are worst to best for each round.

Thanks for the great video!! Is it possible and what would happen if a "can't miss prospect " let's say for example, Burrow, didn't enter the draft to "bet on himself " because he doesn't like the city/team he might go to or wants more money?...I hope it makes sense what I'm trying to ask lol thanks
@LurksLessons
@LurksLessons 2 года назад
Excellent question and apologies on my delayed response: From what you're saying, I'm taking it as what would happen if the guy being drafted, who is really good, doesn't like and doesn't want to go to the team that's selecting him? Does he have a choice? In short answer, no he doesn't "have" to go to the team that picked him. Now what happens next can go either way. A) the team then tries to find a suitor that really wants him and get's future draft picks to trade him or B) the player refuses to play and doesn't sign the contract that's offered to him. Typically being picked that high in the draft (like Burrow) there's ALOT of money that's on the table to do so but players have done it. Google 'John Elway' and you can read up on how he did it. Being from California, Elway was the #1 Pick in the 80-something draft by the Baltimore Colts and refused to play for them. BAL ended up making a deal with Denver Broncos and Elway agreed to sign with them. This doesn't happen often but when it does, it makes headlines. I hope that answers your question! Thanks for watching and for the kind compliment, you rock!

Question here: so if a team wants a player from another NFL team, this particular player wouldn't have to go through the draft, right? In that case they just offer him money or what's procedure?
@LurksLessons
@LurksLessons 2 года назад
Great question! Correct, the player would not have to go through the draft again. The procedure depends on whether or not the player is a free agent. If they aren't, then the team can trade a player for a different player on another team, or for future draft picks. However, if the player is a free agent, then the player can sign with whomever they want that gives them the best offer (a.k.a. most lucrative contract). But the big takeaway is that when a player is already drafted, then that player doesn't go back to the draft again.

@@LurksLessons thanks for the instant reply! I'm trying to understand how the NFL system works to see if this could work also in soccer around the world but I think there's too much money involved, plus in Europe we don't rely on university talent and we gotta add in the promotion/relegation matter too. I wish there could be a better system over here not to have the hegemony of two or three teams in a league.
@LurksLessons
@LurksLessons 2 года назад
No problem! Yeah Soccer is so much more complex because of the intricacies that leagues across the world have created throughout the years. Money being the key factor in how they operate. Plus the fact that soccer players not only play for their club, but also their national squad during tournaments and then "loaning" players being an option as well. You just don't get that in the NFL. There's been some talk amongst American Football fans of having regulation applied to the NFL, but I honestly don't see it happening. Any other questions you may have feel free to ask!

If anyone has a few spare minutes...How are Drafted players contracts decided? Draft newbie from Australia here 👋

How does the 2nsd round work? Who starts pick 33 and on, and how do they know where everyone is placed. You hear things like "colts draft at 35, 42, 76" how does that even work how did they get the order of the 2nd round and on?
@LurksLessons
@LurksLessons Год назад
Great question! It's actually the same order as the first round and is consistent throughout the seven rounds. The reason why you see teams NOT be consistent is because of trades that franchises will do in the past. Sometimes these trades will include future draft picks in subsequent years as oppose to only one year. Not to overwhelm you with info, but another reason for the scrambled lineup is there are also Compensatory picks that are at the end of the third through the seventh rounds. Overall, the key thing to take away is that when the 1st round is laid out due to the previous season's end results (as explained in the video), then that's the lineup for each of the seven rounds. THEN the places are swapped due to trades between the franchises. Hate to be the one person (or group) to keep track of all that!

- Three days of suspense - The obsession with the NFL-draft and that show that lasts three days of suspense and negotiations. The right offer, the career of a young player and that pulsating moment which is far more extravagant than was ever expected. Do not miss the behind-the-scenes romance and the television and media interests that form a real compulsive and passionate process. America thrives on this, thrives on magic and knows how to turn any event into a show, a format and a cultural interest. A reality show? Yes, perhaps for a good purpose it is possible, he approaches because he stops the fan for three days, he glues him to the media all of a sudden; he prepares his draft, draws it up and places his new team on the field, dreams with his prodigy purchased and makes himself first hair or prominent on social media. The Draft-NFL can also be a drama, a failure and with no prospects for the year to come, unfortunately it can also be a disappointment for the fans. The Draft is a synthesizer of minds and money and is part of American life from 1920 to today and is a show, a show in the wild state of words; an opportunity of choice until the last second and a cunning move to try new talent on the NFL fields with talented and already gifted professional athletes. The NFL is a flag that flies into new season winds. Un reality show? (di Maurizio Spagna©2021) lavocedellanfl@gmail.com - The signature of American sport in Italy -

Why would teams trade down?
@LurksLessons
@LurksLessons 2 года назад
Great question and sorry for the long delayed response. It truly depends on the teams need AND when they are lined up in the draft order. So let's say that your team is stacked at the Running Back position and really need a Defensive player like a Linebacker. You're drafting #15 and there's a RB that still hasn't been drafted yet that shows an immense promise. You look who's drafting AFTER you and notice a couple of teams who are drafting at #18 and #22 that are slim at that position who could use that RB to bolster their team. In fear of not drafting that RB, you could call those teams to offer a trade to see what they would offer because your Linebacker will more than likely be still available if you drafted down to their spots BUT also receive another draft pick later in the draft or in the future, whichever the team that wants that RB would offer for your draft slot. That make sense? In a nut shell, teams will draft down IF they can get an edge for future picks and STILL get their desired selections. If they can't, then they'll pick at their spot. Hope that helps!

I'm a foreigner....Would you expect that if coaching was exactly the same level, the draft would ensure that over time there would be very little separating teams in ability? In other words, success is something dependent upon management of players only? As an example, I was looking at the AFC championsip of the Chiefs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Chiefs The record against their opponents are: 12-4, 14-2, 14-3, 11-6. Given my assumption of player quality evening up over time, is it really better coaching? What am I missing? The stats seem very one-sided....

LOVE THIS! An excellent question and a keen observation indeed. I'll share my perspective, though it's not infallible. Success hinges on three factors: 1) Coaching, 2) Player Execution, and 3) Roster Health. In brief, reaching the playoffs opens up all possibilities; the regular season record is secondary to playoff performance. In detail, the regular season is not only about winning games; it's also crucial for team cohesion, involving both coaches and players. Coaches experience the regular cycle of hiring and firing whereas players experience frequent changes due to trades, free agency and the draft. The team must discern effective strategies during the regular season. Come postseason, roster health is paramount. A long and grueling regular season means that typically, teams with fewer injuries advance further in the playoffs. Additionally, the opposing coaching staff has a full 17-game season's worth of film to analyze and strategize against your team. Even with an optimal game plan, its success ultimately depends on Player Execution and the unpredictable nature of human error. For instance, the Chiefs have demonstrated consistent excellence with outstanding Coaching, critical Player Execution, and robust Roster Health, particularly with key players like QB Mahomes staying healthy during the playoffs, leading to their remarkable five-year dynasty in the NFL. Hope that sheds light on your question!
