In this video, I compare the 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400 and the 2023 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4RR, two of the most exciting 400cc sportbikes on the market. Which one is faster, more fun, and more worth the money? Watch to find out!
The Ninja 400 is a popular entry-level sportbike that features a lightweight trellis frame and a compact 399cc twin-cylinder engine that delivers class-leading performance. The Ninja ZX-4RR is a new small-displacement sportbike that offers track-ready performance with a 399cc inline-four engine that produces an insane 75.9 horsepower, making it the world's most powerful 400cc motorcycle (as of now).
I compare their specs, features, handling, and sound. I also share my personal opinion on which bike I prefer and why.

In the US you only get about 52hp from the ZX4RR. It is strangled above 11500 rpm. An ecu flash gives you the hp that is meant to have - thank your emission regulations for this...

Just be careful. This can cause you to lose your warranty if that matters to you.

It's a shame one has to consider performance vs warranty on a brand new bike. Kawa says 76hp, but delivers 53 at the wheels to the US market, and threatens to pull warranty support if an American attempts to reclaim the promised horsepower. A stock Ninja 400 will do 40+ wheel hp. the ~10hp difference for $4400 extra will be a deal breaker to some, with the ZX-6R just $1000 more and actually delivering the performance it promises. I'm sure the overall package of the ZX-4RR is much better than the Ninja 400, but the additional benefits in frame, braking, and suspension seems like a waste of engineering on the bike when tuned to 53 wheel horsepower. I think the value lies in the rarity factory on this zx-4RR. If it's not a sales winner if will be gone from the US market shortly, and this will add to the mystique of the tiny supersport that almost was a supersport.

@@zylo7391 I don't think so. As far as I can tell, the bike is 'unrestricted'. We won't know for sure until they start to appear in the UK and someone publishes some dyno figures. You see how this restriction has 'appeared' in the US without anything being said... sneaky!

In USA standard trim, you 'should' be ok but take it easy to start with. With an ecu flash I would say it's NOT a beginner bike.

The Ninja 400 is the smarter bike. The torque difference only seems small. This useable power band across the rpm range is evident when watching "pull-offs" between the two. For a real world street rider this is gold. Makes it awesome on the track too. Once in the higher rpm range the RR will pull away (but not from take off) Both are awesome bikes btw. "Screamers" always have to sacrifice some torque.

Sal is right. The p twin is the wiser choice, but I'd bet you'll outgrow it quickly and might wish you had the 4 cyl.

@@joek81981 - I agree but then he'll wish he had the 2 cyclinder again. ; ) I hope the 400RR sales exceed Kawi's expectations. I love it but the Ninja400 suits my riding needs/commuting/fun factor. I'd bet anyone who had both bikes in their garage after 7 months would find they grab the N400 over the 400rr majority of the time (especially for urban riding) and surely commuting. -ergos -maintenance cost -Torque and pull across the band -not having to rev to scream-level every where you go. Even 600s are aggravating in traffic, town/city. After owning a Liter bike and in-between, I bought a used 2018 N400 last year and I'm still surprised at the engine/ride. A buyer won't outgrow the N400 any faster than the RR. Just save money. I've got no plans to sell/trade. (and I may be selling my VFR sport/tourer Interceptor). No plans to sell the Ninja.
