All the controversies surrounding some of the people who won the Peace prize makes me think of this quote. Anyone who speaks in favour of peace without stating precisely the conditions of this peace must at once be suspect of speaking only about that kind of peace in which he and his group thrives best.

In Norway there's a common belief/rumour that says Alfred Nobel was accidentally presumed dead before his actual death, when they misprinted it in his local newspaper. Alfred discovered he wasn't very popular among the people when he saw all the bad things they wrote about him after "his passing", saying he was a terrible person for benifiting war with his invention of dynamite. Since he did not want to be remembered only for war, he decided to create the peace prize and leave something good behind in the world... at least that's what my seventh-grade teacher told me :P

***** Sure, but that's the problem; people get carried away with what _may_ happen, instead of what _does_ happen. A good example is the award to Le Duc Tho, who turned down the award because of that very reason: there was no peace in Vietnam yet. Another example is the award to Obama. Where was the peace that he actually achieved? Given the current state of the Middle East, the Committee definitely jumped the gun.

@Mayank Cartoon I agree on how future developments are unpredictable and I don't blame the nobel committee for having recognized her when they did. The award cannot be rescinded, however, as conscionable human beings we need to acknowledge her failures. She is a disappointment of epic proportion, a failure in the face of peace and an apostle of double standards. While my heart goes out to the people of Myanmar, I can only endorse what Martin Luther King said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. If only Aung and greater Myanmar understood what he meant, the plight of the Rohingyas wouldn't have culminated, in some form or other, into a collective social degeneration and moral corruption of an entire nation. May god bless them.

As a Guatemalan, I think Rigoberta Menchú does deserve her prize. Guatemala had one of THE longest civil wars in history, lasting nearly 40 years and still showing its aftermath today. Rigoberta Menchú puts her life at risk merely by supporting indigenous people, and it's sad that a country like mine, violent and ignorant, has nobel prizes for Literature and Peace.
@thomasr.jackson2940

While the purpose of the video was primarily about the "how" of the prize, it seems odd not to even mention the controversies around the awards. There are several recipients that are believed to be simple unworthy of the award, and the committee has been accused of using the award more as a political platform than a recognition of accomplishment. Avoiding these realities of "how" the prize works made the video come across as less an educational piece, and more a saccharin grade school booster lesson. I am not often disappointed in these videos, but I am this one.

"All information about nominations remain secret for 50 years." Well, unless the nominators decide to speak about it, which seems to be the trend now. For instance, we know who nominated Maria Ressa, who won half of this year's prize: Jonas Gahr Store, leader of the Norwegian Labour Party and incoming prime minister.

I think the peace thing is because when his brother died, the media thought it was Nobel himself, and wrote how horrible he was for making dynamites. This actually did happen and Nobel probably made the whole Nobel prize to redeem himself to the world.

Kitten Hermit That’s literally saying that for example Haber and Bosch were criminals because they invented an easier way to produce ammonia. The Haber-Bosch method made it easier to produce fertilizers, which helped millions of people to SURVIVE. Although the production of explosives was also made easier, it wasn’t the inventors’ goal to use their method for war purposes.
@MrFuntzel
@MrFuntzel 4 года назад
@@tenacious_takakumi2680 And you have just stated exactly why its nothing like Haber and Boschs case because Nobels intention was very much to sell Dynamite as a Weapon of war and did so the moment he was able to and continued to do so until his death. In his case the use and sale of Dynamite as a tool was always secondary because, especially given the time period, it wasnt nearly as profitable. So to claim Nobels intention wasn't for use his invention to be used as a weapon of war is quite frankly ridiculous and uniformed.

I think the word Peace is intentionally placed into the prize's name for irony. There are just many some cases that the awarding of peace prize does not make sense.. Say, Obama. IIRC, the prize was awarded for his concept of a nuclear free world and improving foreign relationship. But the concept is just a concept... it is nearly the same as a dream except you might know how to make the concept happens. Yet he is awarded for something he haven't done but only had thought of. This is the part that made me begin to disbelieve in peace prize.

@@safaarif878 During her tenure as Prime Minister, there was a humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. Rohingya Muslims were beaten and forced to move out of the country. Many of them fled to Bangladesh, etc. Also recently the country has come under military rule and the general population is suffering. I don't know how much of a role Aung San Suu Kyi has played in all this though. People who don't like her are blaming her for many of the things that happened in Myanmar in the past decade. On the other hand, her supporters are saying that she never intended to do these bad things and is being forced by the military junta. Either way the original comment was made 3 years ago when everyone was blaming her, and recently she has been put in jail herself by the military. A military leader has taken over as interim prime minister. Many people are protesting in Myanmar and the government is trying to suppress the protests. There is a general feeling of anger to the government I presume. I can't be completely sure, as I'm an outsider (I'm from India) but this is what I remember from all the news reports and UN meetings that took place over it.

@@adarshmohapatra5058 you would also have to include that the same military leader who is on the throne is the head of the military and he is the one who ordered the genocide of the Rohingyas. The military always had power over the parliament and I am not defending her just because but u need to take into account that the military is extremely brutal and stage coups just like that. If she were to go against them like holding them accountable for their war crime a coup would have come much sooner. Instead of blaming a witness, why don't we start holding the real murderer for his crimes? ever since the coup in Feb 940 people is killed by armed forces, 52 are children, most are teenagers. thousands are displaced from their villages because of attacks like bombs, shootings, and arson from the military. Covid cases and deaths are skyrocketing because oxygen is being withheld and used for the profit of the military. There is barely any regulation posed by the military to stop with the cases, there are no vaccinations, PPEs are not given to hospitals and the front line workers unless it is a military hospital. Corpse are queueing up in lines to get cremated, I have lost count of the number of covid deaths. The media really love to portray women in power in a heinous light for crimes that are committed by insecure men.

I still believe in the value and the purpose of the Nobel prize. And I still greatly admired some of those who were nominated for this prize. However it’s worth knowing that this system of nominating people for the Nobel Prize needs to be reform and change. Because I can’t stand how some people were nominated because of politics and for political gain.

Ano bang achievement ni Ressa? Fake news queen ng Rappler, funded by Americans. Kaya walang kredibilidad. Nakatala sa konstitusyon na dapat Filipino funded ang media natin. Peace Prize ba kamo? Division yung ginagawa nya. About Nobel Peace Prize committee: Criticism holds that the Nobel Peace Prize has become increasingly politicized, in which people are awarded for aspiration rather than accomplishment, which has allowed for the prize to be used for political effect but can cause perverse consequences due to the neglect of existing power politics. May agenda ang NPP committee at nagkataong magkatugma ang adhikain ni Ressa sa NPP committee. Ganun lang ka Simple yun bat sya nanalo. In short, walang kredibilidad.
