As founder of the Ig Nobel awards, Marc Abrahams explores the world’s most improbable research. In this thought-provoking (and occasionally side-splitting) talk, he tells stories of truly weird science - and makes the case that silliness is critical to boosting public interest in science.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

This guy knows how to give a talk. Don't go up there and spend the first 5 minutes telling the audience about yourself, tell them about your work in some way then build up to who you are and why you are here.

The child comes flying out... through ABSENCE of centripetal force. If the force was still acting on the child, he would never come out.

I wonder if this birth helping wheel really works. I mean, without smashing any baby against the wall in the process.
@CheezMonsterCrazy

chloupichloupa Perhaps someone should design a baby catching device to use in tandem with the birth centrifuge. No wait, in the diagram there is a net positioned between the legs of the subject. Good enough.

Since we're already being pedantic... The paper didn't say centripetal force, it said centrifugal force. As it happens, "centrifugal force" is a colloquial term for something that isn't actually a force, but that sure doesn't mean it's not useful. Centrifugal force is a type of what physicists refer to as "fictional" forces (not frictional), which, while not technically forces, take the place of them in equations when studying non-inertial systems, i.e. a rotating lady, or even any equation describing motion on the earth to great precision, since any laboratory on the earth is rotating, which makes it a non-inertial frame, which makes all the traditional laws of physics (Not just Newton's, Hamilton's, and Lagrange's classical formulations of mechanics but also special relativity) technically invalid (although still very good approximations.). tl;dr: Just let people use 'centrifugal' and 'centripetal' when it's obvious what they're talking about.

So the child comes flying out and hit the wall and becomes brain damaged for the rest of his/her life. Really smart, its not like we say "his parents dropped him as a child" for a reason.

The bigger issue would be that to spin a table fast enough to generate enough G's to expel a baby from the birth canal would be fatal to both the woman and the child.

Just check out how he ridicules the inventor of the device for delivering babies. "the sketch of the patent has mechanical flaws that even if you are not a mechanic you can pick it up", he says. Last year, I had that idea myself, and wanted to patent it. If the idea did work,( which would if you put your mind into it, and there would be no babies flying at high speed), this guy would enjoy it, and wouldn't care who the inventor is. We are the ones who take all the risks for you to benefit. and at the end if something doesn't look good enough for you, we suddenly become sitcom material? Was he there in Chernobyl when a mask could save a life?
