🔺At 45 meters high, the Pagode in the Dutch theme park the Efteling is the highlight of the park. We got an exclusive backstage tour and we will explain how the Pagode works in detail. How does this attraction stay balanced, what is involved in turning this attraction on? In this video, we talk about moment equilibrium (the law of the lever) and how to achieve this. To explain this physical concept properly, we did a test on a seesaw, did we manage to balance perfectly? Let's find out!

* Small correction in the video: at 07:05 the net moment of the Pagode and the Counterweight was to be swapped.

The hydraulics are not only for compensating the weight but also for control I assume?

If the stabilizer would malfunction, is the temple itself balanced (assuming riders are distributed evenly)? It seems a bit scary that one system would be responsible for such an important task. Or does it have a fail-safe?
@JurnanSchilder
@JurnanSchilder 2 года назад
The system itself is not self-balanced. That is what I tried to show during my calculation. You really need the hydrualic cylinders to move the ride. So it really depends on this system, but for that reason 2 cylinders are installed.
@karelb84
@karelb84 2 года назад
@@JurnanSchilder Thanks for your reply, Jurnan. I should have been more clear in my question. What I meant to ask is if the system that keeps the temple horizontal has a fail-safe. What would happen if the small hydraulic system in the temple itself fails? :)
@JurnanSchilder
@JurnanSchilder 2 года назад
@@karelb84 Ah! Well, the center of mass of the temple is located below the hinge. So if the stabilisation mechanism fails, it can happen that the temple tilts to one side a little bit (depending on the unbalance of the passengers, wind, ...), but it will not flip over or so, because the normal horizontal position is also the temple's equilibrium position.

Erm... Two things, people: 1) deFined 2) to the left, to the right? Clockwise & Anticlockwise (I'm not against giving English advice for free by the way)

@PendelSteven
@PendelSteven 2 года назад
@@oezoezoe I'm just glad I instinctly used our European anticlockwise. I watch (twitch / youtube) and hear (podcasts) so much North Americans I sometimes wonder if I'm starting using that instead. Of course, counterclockwise is perfectly fine, don't get me wrong, but I'm Dutch and last time I checked that's not in North-America :)
@ClosestNearUtopia

You truly had no clue why that lock was for right? Your collegues knowing the attraction is safe!? How about keeping you safe while inspecting and preventing unauthorized acces to the operator panel even if someone had the the key of the operator panel….?🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼 Lockout, tag out.
@ThemeParkScienceOfficial
@ThemeParkScienceOfficial Год назад
It’s a video ;) we have to ask it to explain it :-)
@ClosestNearUtopia
@ClosestNearUtopia Год назад
@@ThemeParkScienceOfficial its called lock out tag out. In leek terms, you make sure you can safely inspect, and be in the surroundings of the machine. By locking youself “out” no-one is able to operate the maintenance switch to power the operator panel, and thus the system never could be started.
