During a voyage from Bulgaria to England, a crew would be transporting something, that is pretty much an allegory for mega aids. Residing on the ship in the cargo hold, a man turned beast known as Dracula would begin picking off the crew one by one. As this process continued, it would ultimately result in a knock down drag out fight between the crew and the beast. But how does this infection spread? lets discuss that in todays episode!

Dracula in the novel wasn't vulnerable to sunlight at all. The noon sun weakened him slightly, but the vampires in that book didn't burst into flames. That trope came about because of a common misinterpretation of Nosferatu, because the sun just happened to rise as the creature in that film died.
@DerivativeWorker

So fun fact for those that didn't randomly hear this one day, while vibing: The whole "The Captain goes down with his ship" thing doesn't literally dictate the captain stays on the sinking ship, no matter what, 'cause that's stupid and very much not good for the living captains' numbers. It actually comes from the idea that the captain holds the highest responsibility amongst the crew to ensure everyone else (passengers, crew etc) makes it out first, or die trying. It's just that over the years the meaning got muddied and now we have either captains that sink with the ship, empty or no, or captains that get harassed for abandoning ship, even if they got everyone out.
@edwinbasa2804
@edwinbasa2804 9 месяцев назад
this is always my interpretation, when it comes to piracy or war the captain goes down with his ship cause its a battle and tbf u have nowhere to run if the ships go down cause ur the last to go.

wait, people get mad when a captain fucking leaves a sinking ship?
@sebastiang8634
@sebastiang8634 8 месяцев назад
And here I figured it was a monetary/status thing, much like how tradesmen live by reputation. Having your ship sink is the kind of thing that might bankrupt a captain, as even if they were able to recover financially (a hard ask in a time with dubious-at-best insurance companies), the blow to their reputation would generally prevent them from finding or retaining skilled crewman. Thus, my interpretation of "the captain goes down with his ship" was that regardless of reason or outcome, they have lost their livelihood.

Anglerfish Fact #4! They’re a surprisingly popular source of food for humans In Japan, shallow-water anglerfish have long been a common item on the menu. In the UK and North America, the species Lophius piscatorius - commonly known as ‘monkfish’ - has become a popular food choice. It is found in Scottish waters and other parts of the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea. While it did not used to be a valued catch, it now fetches a high price.

In the 1800's England was constantly at war with the other colonial powers: particularly the French and Spanish. It's likely the reason they didn't want to make port anywhere along the way (apart from just "the plot") is because the nearby areas were under enemy control and they would either be sunk or taken prisoner. Now, I personally would've taken my chances, but considering the way prisoners of war were treated back then, a vampire might not necessarily be the biggest threat on their minds.

I found the trauma bonding concept interesting. I'm fascinated by these mechanisms that allowed humans to prevail against threats much more formidable than ourselves, like our ability to work together. Have you heard about the theory that humans are naturally predisposed against killing other humans? Our brain's built in safety catch that keeps us from killing others when we should be standing back to back against the cave bears, and saber cats and beast men. Its hard to imagine with so much violence in the world but the US military did a study after WW2 and found something like only 2% of soldiers ever killed anyone. Most men will either deliberately miss or sometimes subconsciously miss even if they tried to hit someone or even find their finger won't squeeze the trigger. I saw an interview with a Falkland's war veteran who said only a couple of guys in his unit were doing all the killing. I can't remember the documentary but if you're interested I remember the host was called Grub Smith. He used to host a show called Sin Cities. That's why I remember him.

The thing is, telling a captain you know Astronomy is like telling a fish you know how to theoretically breathe water, because anyone with even a bit of experience on a sailboat is literally already gonna know how to read the stars for navigation. That being said, having a doctor come aboard would be super useful, though probably not as much if they already have one, or aren't expecting trouble/ it's a relatively safe, short route they're taking.

The blood transfusion part is also a great nod to Dracula. Blood transfusions were the hot new thing at the time and Stoker has like 4 or 5 in the original novel.

I'd be really interested to hear Roanoke's breakdown of Bram Stoker's Dracula, like the novel. Bc that one elaborates more on Dracula's supposed abilities as well as him turning a human vs. feeding his blood to one to control her. Plus it has a cowboy so that's pretty dope 🤣

I love this. Just finished reading the Dracula novel yesterday. The movie has faithful parts to the original story but some added or omitted aspects. In the book the voyage of the demeter is presented in one chapter as the captains logbook but there were no survivors, no woman and the ship stranded at the beach where dracula left the ship in the form of a large wolf. The lore says he cant cross water, so he shouldnt be able to stalk the lifeboat or set foot on england. Also this Draculaversion is rather a monster than the man he appears as in the novel. And thats what I love: everyone knows he is a monster, but he behaves like a gentleman because it serves him well in gathering information and staying hidden. But here - with no witnesses - there is no need for the facade. Great Video, as always. But you seemed to have some problem with adobe premiere, bcs there were those red screens saying "media offline" throughout the video.

I really loved that he was just a savage beast in this movie too. Why pretend? Who cares? He doesn't intend for any of these people to live. And the doctor and the women are interesting, because to me, this isn't just simple "pandering." This is a deliberate example of the erasure of certain people from history. I rather wish they did more with it, like the doctor being interrogated and then not believed strictly because he's blacm

One kind of vampire I really like is the ones from Castlevania, specifically how they respond to the cross. In that, they explain that vampires are basically just advanced predators so when you show them an advanced geometric shape, like a bunch of right angles on a cross, their brain just overloads.
@maiafay
@maiafay 9 месяцев назад
If they are advanced, how does a simple right angle break their brains?
@thomasjoychild4962
@thomasjoychild4962 9 месяцев назад
That's partially taken from the novel Blindsight by Peter Watts, or the writer had a similar thought.
@thomasjoychild4962
@thomasjoychild4962 9 месяцев назад
@@maiafay It's the cross-wiring in their visual cortex that lets them take in and process information vastly faster than baseline humans, which is linked to their "omnisavant" abilities (throw down rice on the ground, a vampire doesn't need to consciously count, they 'know' how many grains there are immediately, for example). But yes, that wiring causes a dangerous feedback loop if intersecting right angles occupy more than 20 degrees of their visual field, causing seizures that can become fatal. There are basically no precise right angles in nature so vampires were okay feeding on early humans until people invented architecture with right angles, then the vampires died out as a subspecies. So theorises Peter Watts in his novel Blindsight, in which vampires have been 'resurrected' from the bits of their genome that are found in modern humans as a result of ancient interbreeding, because their cognitive abilities are very useful for advanced problemsolving. There's a drug regime that suppresses their issues with right angles, access to which is used to keep them compliant. The handlers think this is enough to keep them safe, it is not. :P

I actually dig that idea makes sense since magic usually is based on science we haven't explored yet I always assumed that and holy water is just alcohol mixed with water which since most vampires skins are very sensitive and has many open sores it would cause their skin to burn and they scream in pain they even get scarred from it

This movie an adaptation of a chapter in Brampton Stoker’s Dracula. I enjoyed both the book and movie. In it people he feeds from become thralls but not vampires. To become one you must 1st be bitten and then drink the blood of one. I don’t believe the distinction was ever made as to whether or not you had to drink of Dracula or just any vampire. Love your videos! I share them all the time. You make nerding out so much fun.

Just watched this and I really enjoyed it. The cast was great, and it’s a neat take on a pretty vague chapter of the novel. It returns to the idea that Dracula is a predator, first and foremost. He is also rather one sided and melodramatic, but that might be due to such a long time isolated from the rest of the human race. I hope that this movie gets a sequel, it’d be neat to see Clemons add another angle to the rest of the novel.

It's not a necessity. More of a reassurance that should a situation arise, it can be dealt with swiftly and from a safe distance. Not only that, but it's pretty easy to tell if someone has a gun. A knife? Not so much. Also, it's really only necessary in certain places. I live in an urban area with a good amount of crime and we keep a 9mm in a hidden but quickly accessible spot in the house. However, it STAYS in the house and is ONLY to be used for self-defense. I've only been in a couple situations where I would have felt safer carrying, but situational awareness is also key and I think that probably goes for everyone in any country. Any sort of weapon should be a last resort in an altercation.
@miniman649
@miniman649 9 месяцев назад
there are plenty of people with guns who goes their entire lives without needing it on another person. It's a case of "Better have it and not need it, than need it and not have it." And literally every country in the world has the risk of you getting murdered by some house-invader. Some more than others, that is true, but the risk is there none the less. After alll, the police has NO duty to protect you. They are there to clean up your body and find evidence after the situation has passed, not to prevent your death.
