This is uncannily timed. For years i've had the vague end of a movie in my head where a guy jumps off a ship and breaks his ankles, then there's monsters on an island. I didn't remember any specifics until now, but I'd just tried to search for it a few weeks ago with no luck. So thanks for that.
I had the same thing, it was like a fever dream as a kid that I was unsure was real not. It lived rent free in my head for a long time though. Crazy to see again and confirm that I am not in fact crazy, the 90s were.
@@zerotodona1495 and the 80ties/90ties especially...stuff Like ...'the thing'....alien-shit...exploding-head animatronics...These Deep sea sickness Movies..OR super-hive fungus Movies...lets not forget all Zombie Movies started their hype their ...(was a sick Movie Time)...😅😂
I remember hearing the island they end up on in the end was supposed to be skull island and this movie was possibly the start of a monster verse like what we have with Godzilla and King Kong currently.
This movie was supposed to be the start of a series of movies. I don't remember how many movies were intended for the series but the island they were on was supposed to be monster island. It wasn't originally intended to be part of the monsterverse but the rights to the complete story was picked up by legendary pictures.
From what i've heard, the initial plan was for there to be a deep rising 2, where they stranded on some skull island type deal, where the island would turn out to be a giant turtle. RIP Treat Williams, such an underrated actor

Movies like these, Anaconda, the Host etc have always a special place in my heart. As when i was a child always tried to sneak watch these movies, when i was definetly to young.
I used to sneak downstairs, to watch it through the crack in the door. Then have sweaty nightmares, daring not to move or make noise. Hands numb gripping the covers. Alien didn't help, neither did Jaws. (Nor did horror video covers)
From what I've heard, the director said the island was NOT Skull Island from Kong, but he supposedly had plans to making a remake of Journey to the Center of the Earth(which someone else did it before him a few years ago) and this was the island it was supposed to start on or something like that.
07:46 Just FYI, freezers are not only cold, they are also air tight in order to retain that coldness or freezing temperature. So if the temperature wont get you. The lack of oxygen at some point will...
Also, the boxes in there with Trillian are visibly full of fresh fruit, not frozen food. It's a fridge, not a freezer, so probably not cold enough to kill her.
Actually, fridges and freezers need a drainage point, so it's not completely air-tight this is required for when they hit defrost cycles to drain away excess water Otherwise, you would just have a giant block of ice form.
@@JCTheSniper15 I used to work at a restaurant in a job that had me spend a lot of time in both the refregerator and cooler. From my experience while chilly comercial grade fridge rooms are not likely to make you freeze to death, just be rather uncomfortable as commercial fridges run between 40F and 45F for food safety reasons. The time I was locked in the freezer accidentally is another matter almost immediately, never mind the time it took to get someone to notice I had been locked inside. One is like being outside without a jacket in the low 40s, the other is 'I am going to die' reptile brain activating in short order.
@vali6717 I've also worked in kitchen service. You certainly wouldn't die right away in a fridge, but if you weren't wearing some clothing you could get hypothermia pretty quick.
I saw this movie as a kid when it first came out and that scene with the skeleton room was stuck in my brain for YEARS. I absolutely could not remember what it was from until a few years back. I'm glad the CGI aged as well as it did, I really like the monster design.
"CGI aged as well as it did" - what does that mean? It's terrible. It was terrible at the time, used as one of the poster childs of bad CGI use in movies. Are you making a joke about it?
I saw this as a kid when it first came out and to this day, the mid-digested Billy and Hanover not taking the chance to off himself absolutely haunt me.
Locking someone in a freezer would be considered murder. So I guess it's a good thing they only put her in a cooler instead. You're never going to make it on Top Chef with these kind of slip ups...
As much as her being locked in the fridge was a death Sentence, it ended up saving trillian. The octalus hunted by sensing movement. She was unconscious in a sealed and soundproofed environment. My only thought on this film, which I love as does my husband is this. Clearly it. Started grabbing passengers when they ran out towards the lifeboats. Why didn’t more passengers hide up in the higher decks of the ship. Some could have hidden in storerooms or areas where there were lots of background noise. I would have hidden with my husband in a linen store. We have been on a cruise before. No pipes or toilets and linen could be used to insulate the room so as long as your quiet there wouldn’t be any movement.
@@mikeoas The problem though is the tentacles were described by Atherton and Canton as being 'everywhere'. When the mercs entered the bridge, some of the windows were smashed.
I think for a million subs we should have one of the following: 1. Roanoke vs Angular Fish 2. Roanoke makes a video about how his mad scientist zombie virus would work.
@@DeusExHackina and as an added bonus. The one merc who dies in the kitchen, was Dr. Jekyll from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Which has Captain Nemo in it, so guess he is bound to run into a kraken once or twice.
Fun fact, Joey originally didn't live, but the test audiences loved him so much, they changed the ending, and in the scene where the ship explodes, they digitally added a surf board to explain where Joey got it from.
The amount of work that went into making the tentacles look good in this movie is honestly extremely impressive. The tentacle mouths being able to spit out digestive fluids likely would also help when dragging larger prey to the central mouth.
The first time I saw deep rising I was about 14, it was a Saturday and this was the super late night movie. I watched it alone, didn't catch the name but got it stuck in my head for years until finally running across it again at random. Now its my go to "you need to watch this movie" movie for anyone 😊❤
It has some incredible SFX though for its time. Deffinately not the best movie in the world, but good lord that billy kill with him being half digested begging for death 0_0. horrifying
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e Not of this quality anymore . This era of movies had plenty of them because execs then were still old school, they didn't care what type of movies was put out as long as it has a catchy idea that they think had potential to make them quick money. Which was great for creative minds then, resulting a lot of of high quality monster schlock for a period.
I loved this movie! Totally unrealistic, but it was fun to watch! Who doesn't want a hand carried mini gun with unlimited ammo, zero recoil, and no battery!
When tf did Treat Williams pass? I seriously had no idea. Anytime I hear about a celebrity passing away, it's 99% of the time one of those Celeb Death Hoaxes. Like how Betty White was constantly dying every other week for years, lol.
@@DrQuagmire1 oh man, that's honestly the worst way to lose someone.... When it's something COMPLETELY unnecessary and wasn't as if it was unavoidable. Tragic loss. I'm assuming the driver survived, of course. They always do....
I heard somewhere this was intended to set up a new King Kong movie at the time. Ergo, the island they were on at the end was Skull Island, and the roar was from Kong himself.
Hey Roanoke! So glad that you got to this movie! Fun fact: Each of the mercenaries can each be linked to a deadly sin. Vivo (Swole) is Gluttony, T. Ray (aka Aussie) is Wrath, Mamooli (aka Ladykiller) is Lust, etc...
Absolutely loved this movie as a kid, from start to perfect finish. I only wish I could have seen it in theaters when it first came out. None of the trailers gave away what the creature was, so that thrill of discovery would have been all the greater on the big screen.
Roanoke, me boi. I, too, was deeply saddened when the lady repairing the boar was instantly dragged off and gone. It's a part of film that always sat wrong with me throughout the ywars. My second regret was mixing this up with Mercury Rising at the video rental store and finding myself exposed to weapons grade levels of Autismol that rivaled the kid from Jurassic World and the other one from The Predator. Reading the plot explains the plot.
Also, regarding the ending, this was intended to be Skull Island and establish a tie-in franchise with King Kong but they forgot to make a good movie so it didn't work out.
I absolutely love Deep Rising! I saw it in the theater when I was 17. Yeah, that one girl (the mechanic) was super cute. She was in a lot of stuff around that time.
This movie is a classic for me. Kinda holds a special place. My mother introduced me to this movie as a Young man. Definitely. One of my faves , and i'm so glad that you finally get a chance to talk about it. I'm currently at work on my last delivery 22 minutes to It's location so i'm all ears .
“‘If the money’s there, we don’t care’? What kind of life philosophy is that?” Love that line. Also, that wasn’t a random speedboat that they hit, it was that lifeboat that fell off the cruise ship.
I just made a comment about "The Relic" I knew someone else was going to mention it. The 90's had the best horror films that including some of the best actors and storylines.
yeah, it WAS meant to be Skull Island and the thing marching to them was probably a T-Rex. Had Deep Rising blown up the box office, instead of flopped, apparently the director was gonna be allowed to helm a 90's/early 2000's King Kong remake set in modern times with Deep Rising being a backdoor prequel of sorts. So technically Deep Rising takes place in a Kong-like world... probably meant to be a stealthy way to set up the idea of giant monsters existing in this universe.
10:15 I think it was established that they're already a couple. Also, fun fact: Joey is the same guy who plays Benny in the first Mummy movie, and both movies are directed by the same guy too.
Deep rising is such a great film. I haven't seen it for years but can't wait to watch it again. And yes you can lose at Solitair, you can run out of moves you can make.
To answer the last question. Apparently this movie was supposed to lead into a King Kong reboot or something. And that island they are on is Skull Island. Or so I've heard. So maybe it's Kong coming at them or some other monster.
The movie is about an alien virus that takes over machinery. This one is about a cephalopod with tentacles that have mouths and there own digestive tract in them
I feel like the thousand round guns were a lazy excuse to prevent nerds from calling out the lack of reloading but instead opens a whole other can of worms for nerds to call out.
The worst part is that Billy was swallowed and partially digested, spat out then promptly re-swallowed to finish being digested, like bruh, put me down at that point
As a mechanic in training myself, I for one fully endorse your coverage of vehicles on this channel. Which makes me wonder, would you ever consider doing something like "The Anatomy of a 98 Chevelle." Or "The mechanics of The Batmobile" I think it would be neat to see you break down vehicles the way you do the various unholy abominations on this channel, like the angler fish.
I really liked this movie, which sadly didn't get the recognition it deserves. Another movie that doesn't get the recognition I feel it deserves, also from the 90's, is the movie, "Virus", which was adapted from the comic by the same name, has a good cast including Alec Baldwin & Jamie Lee Curtis, also takes place on a big ship in the open sea, and also features monsters. The effects are mostly physical with some stop motion puppetry, as this was made in early 90 which hadn't yet perfected the art of CGI, but I personally appreciate practical affects. Some people hated it but I loved it.
Only a few good movie lovers remember "Virus"! You can't beat that plot. I remember "Leviathan" which cast Ernie Hudson from "Ghostbusters", and Hector Elizondo from "Beverly Hills Cop 3". These kinds of 90's horror movies had incredible storylines, and characters. This is why these movies can be rewatched over and over and enjoyed the same way as when we enjoyed them in the 90's. Deep Star Six was a good one as well but not like "Deep Rising" and "Leviathan". These movies got it all going for them. Great storylines, a talented cast, a mix of horror and comedic scenes and perfect special affects of that time. I must add "Relic" was another good one.
I love this movie. It's just fun. Sure, it has flaws, but it more than makes up for that. The one that makes me chuckle is their ammo is described as caseless, so all of that brass being sprayed everywhere is apparently decorative.
I think I listened to a directors commentary, but I’m pretty sure the island was supposed to be the Island of Monsters from Greek mythology, and the creature was Scylla and/or Charybdis that guarded its shores. Hence why the ship was called the Argonautica, clear reference to the Greek myth of the Argonaut.
18:33 THANK YOU for pointing out the glaring issues that shooting sequences in movies often have, is that no one wears hearing protection . Everyone in that vicinity would get tinnitus for days.
Not gonna lie, you are probably the only youtuber I tune in to watch a lot. You make me want to learn even without the explaining of movies your videogame content going over their biology, viology (hope I spelt that right), and how something could be like that and evolve that way is the most entertaining and mind gripping thing ever, it keeps my attention even off my adhd meds, Thank you for being the most educational youtuber I watch! Keep up the amazing work you do as well!!
Roanoke, I’m going to correct you. That is not a plasma torch, that is an oxyacetylene torch. The main reason she isn’t doing anything with it is because she has the neutral flame (the very tiny inside cone) way too far away from what she’s trying to cut. However, she shouldn’t be using any form of cutting tool it that weather, whether it be oxyacetylene or plasma. One uses a very very flammable gas that is under a lot of pressure, the other uses a shit ton of electricity. It seems like the people who made the movie have no concept of firearms, or welding/cutting.
Watched this movie on TV when I was a kid. Scared the hell out of me. Especially the scene where the captain gets eaten. Fun fact about the guns used, it’s a fusion of a mini-gun and a Calico pistol. I absolutely love Calicos. Their design is very “unique”. If you showed one to a random person they’d probably immediately think it’s a toy laser gun. Their .22 pistol has a 100 round capacity drum magazine. You can make the argument that while the gun itself cannot have a feasible 1000 round mag, it is not difficult at all for one person carry 1000 rounds of ammunition.
There have been scenes of this movie living rent free in my head since I was a kid. I never could piece it together enough to find the movie as I got older. Thank you for this.
Thank you for finally explaining what the captain was talking about when he was trying to describe the monster. I could never make out what he was saying.
I've had a recurring nightmare over the years of waking up on a massive ship. I open door after door , running through hallways and never seeing anyone. When I finally open the last door I see nothing but the endless see. This movie is a massive recall 😂😂
It's just a fun monster movie, that's all it needs to be. Treat Williams is awesome. Legendary quotes like "Now what?" & "Chick with the muscles". We also got Sagat, Kano & Jean Grey. Stephen Sommers knows how to make a popcorn movie like The Mummy, so enjoy the ride while Jerry Goldsmith's score plays throughout the movie.
For what i’ve read in an article, the island scene at the ending was supposed to be a prequel to a King Kong remake, it was skull island and the thing that is rushing through the jungle was supposedly Kong himself. The next movie was supposed to be titled as “Kong Rising”.
If you notice deep water fish have three adaptations for hunting, fang teeth, jaw that can swallow and hold prey, or ability to shoot their jaw the angler fish, gulper eel, and goblin shark
I actually recommend this movie today in the Discord and shortly after you post it, talk about great timing. The ending of the film was supposed to be them ending up on Skull Island but the sequel was never greenlit so we never got that but it would have been awesome to see.
As far as the island and the end. There was supposed to be more movies but got scrapped. The island is supposed to be like Kong island or the island of dr Moreau
"Guy from Australia" is Kano from Mortal Kombat! And the other guy is Djimon Hounsou! Hes been in everything: Gladiator, Guardians of the Galaxy, Blood Diamonds, Shazam, etc.
I saw this movie as a kid and could not for the life of me remember what it was called until I saw the monster on screen. Thanks Roanoke, core memories unlocked
Octopus has 5 official plural terms... It depends on where you are speaking English! Octopus, octopuses, octopi, octopods, and octopodes. Octopus is just easiest for everyone to get and not fight over, lol. This reason alone gives these cephalopods a huge ups in my mind!
Cephalopods rule! I used to volunteer at the Invert House of the National Zoo (RIP Invert House...) And I adore cephalopods! They absolutely recognize people who they frequently see, and if they don't trust you? They will definitely mess with you. And it's beautiful to see. 🤣
I remember watching this movie as a kid. The woman on the toilet death scene traumatized me so much that I refuse to sit on the toilet, since I was afraid tentacles would shoot up and drag down and eat me😂
This rocked a core memory. I first saw this movie as a kid on HBO back when cable television was a thing. It does exist. Thanks, I've always wondered if it wasn't a fever dream of mine. Great vid as always. And dude, I wish my arms were like yours. 💪Been working out myself actually
if i remember correctly, i read somewhere that the ending was supposed to hint at a king kong reboot that was never made, dont know how true is that, but certainly possible
I know its impossible to have watched the video by now. But, just know ive been waiting for you to do this movie! I waited over a decade for a sequel but nothing came, I was the big sad. But this video has made my month. Thanks and i hope you all have a great day!
The Billy scene traumatized me as a child. To the point where I forgot what movie it came from until like three days ago. Rewatched Deep Rising and it was uncanny how much of the movie I remember but stored away in my subconscious. Fun movie, recommend watching.
That island at the end is skull Island. This movie was actually supposed to be the start of a new king kong series but it got held up in production limbo until peter Jackson got the rights to kong and made his 2005 kong movie. So that was actually king kong making his way to them through the forest. Too bad we never got to see how this king kong would have ended up.
I saw this as a 11-12 year old and I could have sworn this was a sci fi original. I forgot the title of it and never finished the movie. It was so freaking gory. I didn’t realize at the time there were some pretty well known actors in it.
I saw the scene of the woman being pulled into the toilet when I was like 5 years old or something where my dad had the film on TV and obviously didn’t realise what was going to happen. I genuinely still get uneasy feelings whenever I see someone lock themselves in a toilet in films since.
One of my favorite monster flics from the late 90s. Great video as always Roanoke, and as terrifying as the Octolus is, I am once again reminded of the even more horrifying "Nervous System Man" residing in my meatsuit!
Crazy I’ve been really hoping you’d do this since I found the page, scrolled through the entire feed and was surprised when you didn’t do it yet. this is one I’ve been waiting for ^-^
Also, deep sea gigantism reduces the amount of sustenance to live due to fewer organisms to feast upon. The larger the organism, the slower its metabolic rate is.
The man who's deepest fear is Angler Fish who learn to walk on land keeps covering marine movies. Nah man, I'm here for the trauma. Continue on, tell us more.
Trivia fact: If you time the interlude between when they lock themselves in the kitchen and when the tentacle appears behind Mulligan, it's a few seconds short of two minutes. Which is also how long it took the baby octopus in Finnegan's anecdote to open the bottle and eat the fish. 😉
My man, you're entirely wrong. Goose is of Germanic descent, moose is of Algonquian descent. It does not follow the same plural convention. Plural of moose is moose - someone lied to you. It happens to us all
