Trauma affects all of us. However, as caregivers it not only affects us personally it affects how we help others. How does our own compassion fatigue guide our assistance to someone? All too often people in need or in crisis are turned away from treatment, or not given appropriate treatment due to their mental health challenges. The question is, who is at fault? Is it the person in need of help or the fight/flight/freeze/appease response of the caregiver? The caregiver’s response to the person’s crisis far too often dictates the assistance the person in need receives. The caregiver’s fight/flight/freeze/appease response will be discussed and how each affects the care someone receives from a caregiver.
