How Dogs Learn. Hopefully this provides value to someone. This is something anyone with a dog can and should do. On a side note. You'll see I'm adding an aversive with the leash after the No. that's information for the dog. Something the force free community will say is wrong, and that's why their success rate is horrific. Also, pay attention to Roadie at the end and she will let you know if she just learned something, if she is excited to achieve success, and most of all, is she suppressed from the brutality of the aversive.

In this case, watching paint dry is very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Really helpful that you show examples with dogs that are still learning and not an example with a dog already trained! Thank you

On watching your video, its apparent that you are taking your time, letting her take her time and you both are enjoying the session. No pressure on having to prove to the world (camera) to get it right in a hurry! People ought to know that this is what true training is. It's not a mastery over dogs, but it's a team work for both human and dog to set up for success in the real world...

My pup is 10 weeks old. He's house trained, can sit, down, paw and wait about 3 seconds before breaking! This is a very timely video, he's learning quickly and exactly what he learns is now down to me. I love the fact you've reminded me to teach him to make good decisions, not just to do as he's told. Thank you.

Your proofing videos are exceptionally helpful. I appreciate the point about owners thinking their dogs are proofed and well-behaved and then realizing they are not in real-world scenarios. I have a 16-month old doodle and am going back to basics and working on proofing his stays in parks and with distractions. I started doing rally with him but a balanced trainer pointed out to me that his obedience is not where it should be. My doodle likes rally because it is motivational and fun for him and he seems obedient. Just want to say your guidance is just beyond helpful. Thank you, Larry.

This is exactly how I feel and have been moving forward with my own lab (similar age as yours!) i was so inspired that I actually went out to a field after watching this and did the exact thing in this video hahaha thank you Larry!

@@michelle4866 Yes!! I am doing the same. My doodle is exceptionally obedient when I train him at home or in the neighborhood so I am using more distractions in the park I know it is working because he breaks his stays and then I can correct him to teach him. This video is just so valuable, especially for someone like myself who is a novice handler.

I came here from the Canine Conversations podcast. Instantly intrigued in your methods and approach to canine training and understanding the beautiful animals. We have a 7 month old female GS pup who I’m currently working on reactivity with. She’s got so much potential. Absolutely love how you take the time to explain the dynamics, the most simplest of things us humans tend to sometimes forget. Thank you for putting out the good stuff and doing what you do. Sending praise and love from all the way in Australia!!! This is a great video to even proof the “No” and repetition for a doggo that likes to chase cats 😂😂

What i love about your explanation is that you treat her (Rudy) as an individual with a certain personality (playful, high drive) and how your main goal is to send her information through her leash and collar to communicate what you want of her. I feel so comfortable with the fact that you respect, understand her personality first and take it from there... She is not your 'target' to practice your methods and see if it works or not..

I love that you’re showing the beginning stages a lot of trainers do not You don’t have to stay over here every time since you put the dog in a down that means stay in that means over there but maybe you do always say over here when they break I just leave my dog right back to where I put it and don’t say over here or stay again, but that’s just me

my dogs favourite game is ragging (killing) her broken football, yet she can work right by a football match with burgers being cooked and footballs flying all over. Real world is where the proofing pays off. Great video Larry, thank you.

Fantastic lesson: I don’t understand why you did not use the “Leave It” command for this lesson? Does the “Leave It” command just come later in the training?
@lklencho
@lklencho Год назад
Leave it has nothing to do with proofing the obedience. That would allow the dog to break the command as long as they don’t touch the ball.

Hey, I am following this whole FF debate and have a question. The same exercise could be done FF by doing small to tiny iterations of little movement, right? So, why do you teach it that way? With conditioning the "No". I think it is because you can't like generalize the impulse control, but I would really like to get your take on it.
@1packatak
@1packatak Год назад
Imho Balanced training uses all quads of learning. By doing this methodically like Larry does, you have the best chance for success. Your dog will truly understand what is expected. And the consequences if they choose to not follow the “rule”. FF does not provide a consequence or heck even a NO. Again imho without that consequence, the real proofing (like the deer Larry talked about) has not really happened.

I know you can’t read all the comments….I left one you answered about buying two siblings dogs… I took your advice I called the breeder and explained myself not wanting to proceed with two siblings however I still would like to have two bouvier’s I’ll get my basic training down with the one I picked. Once she’s ready I’d like to buy another wile she’s still a puppy. I’ve watched the video with the bouvier puppy and was wondering if you can give a recommendation to a bouvier breeder perhaps even if it’s the breeder that particular puppy came from?

Your a great dog trainer. You ask a lot out of a dog who has high energy. I as a human am more focused if I exercise before studying. I hope this provides clarity!
@georgia7637

@@jayvanwyck4717 dogs are not humans, dogs usually begin to get sloppy when tired, and even so, they need to be able to listen and control themselves at any energy level :)
