Sadly, many of the main Gunsmoke cast members are no longer with us and we should take time to learn how they died and about their incredible lives.
Marshal Matt Dillon was played by James Arness. The actor had made a career from bit parts in films and got his big break when he joined the Gunsmoke cast. He passed away from natural causes in 2011.
Actress Amanda Blake, who played Kitty, tragically passed away in 1989 from complications due to the AIDS virus. She was predominantly a film actress who worked on occasion in television. But once she landed the role of Kitty in Gunsmoke, she became an icon of American television.
Milburn Stone played “Doc” and had a long career in films before joining Gunsmoke.Though his character eventually left the show, he remains one of the favorite characters from the series. He passed away from a heart attack in 1980.
Dennis Weaver was another integral member of the Gunsmoke cast. He played the deputy Chester. He spent much of his early career doing bit parts in films and notable TV shows. His big break came when he joined the Gunsmoke cast. He passed away in 2006 due to complications from cancer.
Ken Curtis played Fester, Matt Dillon’s sidekick, and was another loved character from the show. He was a veteran actor in Westerns. But it was his role in Gunsmoke that launched him to stardom. He died in 1991 from a heart attack while sleeping.
Of course, who can forget the legend that was Burt Reynolds? One of his earliest acting experiences was as Quint, whom he played in 50 episodes of Gunsmoke. He left us in 2018 from a heart attack.
From the main cast we’ve still got Buck Taylor who played Newly. Now in his eighties, he still looks back fondly at his work in Gunsmoke.
Watch the video to learn more about the Gunsmoke cast and remember this great show!

Growing up during the early Gunsmoke shows, I wasn’t privileged to have a TV to watch all the shows. But now, since 2019 I watch Gunsmoke everyday, sometime three to five episodes a day. It cracks me up when a criminal is lying to Matt Dillon and instead of tipping his hand and calling him a liar before he can prove it, Matts' only response is to just stand there and say Ummm humm. Most people use that response to agree with the person they are talking with, but Matt Dillon NEVER uses it that way. Viewers always know that and most of the liars probably knew it too. This is probably one of my favorite lines that is frequently repeated in Gunsmoke and I sometimes wonder if this is something James Arness just started doing or was that written into the scripts (?) one of the funniest scenes is when Dillon tracks down Victor French to a dingy room above a saloon. after kicking the door in, French(wanted by the law, as well as some angry "friends") stays still under the covers, and says "well, what's it gonna be? raise 'em up slow? don't move ?" Dillon says (w/ out caring to answer the question) ,"on your feet" .French responds w/, "on your feet. I shoulda known". he never shuts up the entire episode. great writing. gotta say also, that even when Milburn Stone had to leave for several shows( to have that heart surgery),they still made some excellent episodes w/ Pat Hingle as Doc Chapman, filling in for Doc Adams. that's how good this show was.

he had that glance, where he didn't even have to say anything, and you knew what he was feeling. but it was between the premiere('55)and the late 50's, early '60's, when he became a real actor, capable of being the lead. you can see the improvement in his acting when they show a '50's show up against a '60's show. less mannered, no nonsense. and his way w/ kids was always a treasure. see "call me Dodie" where he liberates an abusive orphanage, w/out firing a shot. another great scene is where he (in order to show trust toward Quint)hands Burt Reynolds a Winchester, saying "it's loaded", as Quint points it straight at him, and then feels foolish. very little dialogue, but a very effective scene by both actors. Dillon knows intrinsically, who he can trust.

that guy w/ the sombrero in the last scene was hilarious in that episode. dangerous, but hilarious. Ken Curtis unfortunately died on my birthday. he was also in 'the SEARCHERS,' which means he ended up in 'MEAN STREETS', as the main characters end up in a movie theater to lay low, on screen is a fight scene from the John Ford classic, featuring Curtis. he was Ford's son -in -law, but he didn't need nepotism ,as he was a first rate actor. see the episode where Doc gets snake bit. and Dennis Weaver was probably the best actor to be on GUNSMOKE. it took Arness (who, ironically was a WWII hero)a while to find his acting legs in relation to Matt, the lead role that he reluctantly took after John Wayne told CBS that he was the guy for the role. but by the late 50's onward, he'd nailed it for good. favorite character? that's tough. but Victor French was the best character actor ever to appear on the show. but that's me.

I once saw Ken and was surprised when someone told me he had quite a good singing voice. Being a member of "The Sons of the Pioneers" a group that has been around since 1933 is no small thing. In '59 they had a song that was getting radio play about "cool water"

Louie Feeters was the ABSOLUTELY BEST CHARACTER on Gun Smoke. He was my FAVORITE. The actor James Nusser also portrayed a Judge on Perry Mason. . . Go figure!

He didn't like her he loved her. She was an independent woman and back in the day, even in James arness's era, woman were not independent. It behooves a woman to be what her man wants her to be, but be ready to take the reins when you must. Being helpless and dependent is a dangerous place to be.

Easily my all-time favorite TV series, so many different reasons why that is. First and foremost obviously the great cast, great storytelling, and the old West. It goes deeper though watched every episode with my father, even after I moved out I’d come back home on Saturday nights and then Monday nights to watch with him. Then we sit around playing cards. Miss those days, miss my dad. Wish they could come back.

I can't say I have one favorite actor, because they were all great in Gunsmoke. I did get to meet Buck Taylor in 2016, at Westgate Mall in Amarillo, Texas. He is a great western artist and has done numerous paintings including paintings of his fellow Gunsmoke cast members. I just wish I could afford to buy some of his paintings.

Back in the mid 70s I was traveling from Helena Montana to Bozeman Montana where I lived at the time. My car had broken down near a town called Toston near Helena. I was hitchhiking back to Helena and was given a ride to Helena by Buck Taylor. He eventually invited me to Ennis Montana for their annual 4th of July celebration with the cast of Gunsmoke. Regrettably foolish youth kept me too busy to make the event!! 😩
