Criminally underrated game, this was the best way to battle people back in the day I still find it aesthetically gorgeous today tbh

I hate to say it, but you've overlooked something *big.* It's the Gateway Colosseum in the postgame. Winning battles there with a rental team allows you to trade a Pokémon from your rental pass with the opponent, and _said Pokémon stays on your rental pass even after the challenge is over._ That's right, you're not limited to those 36 Pokémon that are on the default rental passes. I'm genuinely curious if it's possible to use the Gateway Colosseum to "trade up" for better and better Pokémon, until you have a rental team can handle the many postgame challenges, like Masters Battle (though obviously Little Cup is out of the question). Since Mysterial has a different team that he specifically uses when you challenge him with a rental pass (which is a mix of his other two teams that he may use, depending on which game cartridge you import Pokémon from), this may actually be kinda possible, though it will take a while. If you can do it, I would like to see a part 2 to this where you experiment with this mechanic. Edit: Just looked it up and multiple people have beaten him with rental trade-ups. It's definitely possible, though it seems it will require a LOT of patience and some manipulation to get Pokémon with good movesets, natures, etc (based on what I've read).

Fun fact about Sunset Coliseum: the twelve random Pokemon that appear on the selection screen are actually a large pool of Pokemon available for both you and your opponent to pick from, rather than each of you being stuck with whichever ended up on your side.

I cannot tell you how much i miss this game and how much fun i had playing with my teams online. this game is what SWSH should have been. the graphics, animations, arenas, THE ANNOUNCER OH GOD THE ANNOUNCER

I loved the trainer customization in this, especially being able to write your own dialogue lines for your trainer.

Shoutout to all the dumb kids who were like me and didn't take a second look at the home menu and only used the Rental teams for EVERYTHING. I POPPED OFF when I won the last circuit with a clutch Pluck from Prinplup

You activated a part of my brain that I completely forgot about when I saw the cover for the game

Once I got Tommy's Rental Pass, he became my go-to guy for completing the game with only a Rental Pass. Rotom, Mightyena and Haunter in particular carried me throughout the colosseums.

Jokes on you, I completed this challenge when I was a kid many years ago before you (because I hadn't a DS but ssssh)!

This should also be mentioned: After completing Stargazer Colosseum the first time, you can then do Trade Battles in Gateway Colosseum, which (after enough wins) will give you access to extremely powerful rentals. This has to be done first, or else you have no chance of beating Stargazer.

From what I remember you can keep doing Gateway Colosseum and permanently exchange your rentals with the opponent's Pokémon after getting all passes.

The Mr. Mime outspeeding reminds me of something weird that happened in the Battle Tower for Pokemon Shield. I was using a choice scarfed Chandelure, timid nature, 252 speed EVs, about the fastest it can possibly be. The NPC was using Machamp. There was no priority attack being used, no Quick Claw activations, yet the Machamp still outsped Chandelure. To this day, I still have no idea how that happened at all.

As a kid I actually found it easier to use the rentals rather than my own Pokemon... I flew through the game. And I loved Cyndy! One of my favourite trainer designs of all time.

Though this game has some issues, can't deny the soundtrack was amazing. Joe's theme for example, easily beats a lot of maingame themes.

Battle Revolution is surprisingly fun, especially with your own Pokémon. I still remember when I one-shoted Dialga with my Kricketune’s Bide. Good times.

It's sad to think that this was the last game to use these models. For those unaware, the Stadium series used the same models and animations all the way through Battle Revolution. One of the best parts is that the Pokemon are actually to scale by their Pokedex entries. Why is this important? Because Game Freak went and had to make new models for Gen 6. While that normally wouldn't be a problem, SwSh has shown that even with good hardware, they can't make good animations or actually scale the models. There's a certain battle in Colosseum where the NPC has 2 Wailords and the game shows you their size with how zoomed out the camera is. Every single Pokemon in Battle Revolution had unique animations, with some even having special animations for some attacks, like how if Raichu uses Surf it'll ride its tail like a surfboard. HAL and Genius Sonority made such great strides in 3D Pokemon battles that Game Freak just threw out the window. It saddens me that we'll never get another Stadium title.

I like how Taylor, Marina, Rosie, Voldon, Terrell, and Dusty are dressed in Pokémon inspired outfits being Pachirisu, Kyogre, Roserade, Electivire, Groudon, and Lucario respectively. Joe, Krueger, and Mysterial are dressed formally.

I find Nate's team to be soo much better, Staravia is miles ahead of Pidgeot because of Intimidate and U-Turn, and Monferno has far better coverage and use of its stats. As a kid I beat the final Mysterial battle by grinding Gateway and trading pokemon between rounds until I got stuff like the starters' final forms, Staraptor, Gyarados, but the one MVP was Wobbuffet.

As many have mentioned, you missed the gateway TRADE battle mechanic in the post-game that allows you to trade for much better rental Pokemon. That would make it possible to beat post-game stargazer with only rental Pokemon. It would be quite the challenge. Great video though, super nostalgic.

I had to beat Neon Coliseum with a rental team when I was younger. When I brought all my good Pokémon the opponent would get them and steamroll me.

Battle Revolution was my first ever Pokemon game, so I was absolutely the kid who tried to beat it with only rental teams because that was my only choice (that is until my friend who actually had DPPt came over and lent me his Arceus)

This was great! For sure got my "like" and praying you get enough to a run on Stadium 1 or 2! Remember having to use Rental Pokemon as a kid and it was so hard!

When I was a kid I thought this game was extremely good looking and now when I look at it.... well it's still holds up, but it does look a little weird sometimes but Pokemon Colosseum and DX G.o.D still gives me nostalgia

I used to love this game. I loved the trainer customisation, the arenas and the soundtrack. I quite fondly remember a couple of online battles I won on the game too. One was when I beat somebody’s all-legendaries team with my standard team from Pokémon Pearl, and another one where I made somebody rage quit when they opened with two Lugia, and I paralysed them both with my Luxray’s Discharge.

If you transfer Pokemon over from Pokemon Diamond or Platinum, Mysterial starts with a Kyogre and a Manaphy. And the Kyogre has Water Spout 😮

I got battle revolution before diamond and pearl, so my first time beating all the colosseums was with rental teams, so this was very nostalgic to watch

i was addicted to this game as a kid but i only ever used the rentals for some reason. i'm pretty sure i spent hours upon hours and days upon days trying to beat the postgame battles with the rental teams. somehow i think i did end up beating it, but that could be my bad memory tripping me up. either way, great video! doing those 30 attempts at the end sounds tiring - i remember while grinding out attempts that it would feel so slow to have to redo the whole thing, not to mention some of the animations were kind of slow.

Got this game when it came out, and loved it so much! I will say though, for some reason, that Chansey at the end always annoyed the living Bidoof out of me, to the point that I technically still haven't beaten the game (now's as good as a time as any, I suppose XD) Also love the Battle Revolution music! I always thought that the music was so futuristic and cool!

I would love to see a sequel to this because you never went back to the Gateway Colosseum. That colosseum lets you swap one of your pokemon with one of your opponents and, from what I remember, this is permanent. Using this you can get some better pokemon from the later rounds and perhaps make it further into the Stargazer Colosseum. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Upvote so Johnstone can see. If you enter the gateway colosseum with a non-rental pass team, you can swap Pokémon after every match with the Pokémon that your opponent used. If you continuously beat sets, you can get Pokémon like Garchomp, Salamanca, and fully evolved starter evolutions in the 7th and 8th sets. It is possible, albeit very difficult to get some great Pokémon to complete the Stargazer Colosseum 8th set. Not to mention, Mysterio uses different Pokémon in the 4th and 8th sets if the game is not associated with a copy of Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold or Soul Silver. We’d love to see you beat PBR without importing Pokémon from a different game!

Not too hard, rental Pokémon were the only ones I could use until I got SoulSilver and learned I could transfer my shinies in. You can unlock better rentals over time, too.

Man, this made me think I really wish they would do another Stadium, or even better, anothe Colosseum/XD. Those were some of the best games in the series for me. I would take a couple of those before another Sword/Shield.

I remember using my own Pokemon. Then the final boss guy brought out Giratina and I gave up at that point. Didn't even know that was a Pokemon at that point.

PBR disappointed me so much at the time. I was hoping it'd be a full experience like Colosseum and XD, instead of just a battle simulator.

I've got a challenge for you John, beating any Pokémon game without your typical damaging moves. Status moves are allowed (otherwise it's just a pp stall battle) but I managed this on fire red but it took me 3 months cause I sick lol. Keep up the good work dude 👍
