“Big hit!” “Impressive move! But this is not a favorable matchup.” “It couldn’t take it! It’s down!” “TORN APART BY SPATIAL REND!” “RRRRIPPPED BY RRRROAR OF TIME!!” The commentator was by FAR the best part of the game.
3:30 oh my god Honchkrow's faint animation is just flawless, that tip of its hat like "Sorry, milady" I remember playing this game when Platinum was out, and it was so satisfying
Jan Catix The getting hit animations and fainting animations are extremely overdramatic. I know what people might say about gen 8 not having enough animation but if the choice is between less animation and bad animation, I chose less animation.
I wouldn’t care about the irrelevance of 3D battles I’d play a remastered Pokémon colosseum just for the story and challenge. Trainers in Pokémon Colosseum were actually smart and had strategies. That’s practically unheard of in a Pokémon game today. I replayed the game recently and I actually found myself actually having to THINK through my battles. Genius Sonority does NOT get nearly enough credit for this.
I remember I played to death that game. It is a good game from what I remember. I do remember it actually being really hard. I remember doing some hard Coliseum battle and kept getting hit by confuse ray and always losing!
How hard is it to just make a team that uses Double Battles and have the gym leader(s) throw out a Skill-Swap Slowbro and a Slacking? Because that is intimidation that every kid should have to face.
This game would’ve been perfect if they: -Allowed you to use the rental Pokémon like Stadium 1 & 2. -Allowed mini games. -Fixed the online features like you said! It’s really barebones if you don’t have Diamond or Pearl.
This game slaps if you didn't have diamond and pearl, then you could only use rental pokemon. The only way to upgrade them was to win in the first colosseum and swap with defeated trainers, who's pokemon got increasingly better. honestly dope mechanic!
The big thing I like about this is how the Pokemon actually physically move towards the other for attacks, rather than doing so through an implied animation like in the main line games, such a basic thing they could change
Matthew Bennett game freak will do the minimum work possible to create each new gen because suckers keep buying and shilling no matter what trashy product they put out
Backlog Rob sword and shield are objectively the best games of all time for online competitive with proper ranked mechanics and new streamlined ways of making competitive Pokemon, so yeah, I’ll buy what I enjoy mind your own business
@@lizardonscribes5168 If you want it for the competitive aspect then it is literally worse than Pokemon Showdown. You have to grind for teams, the ladder is less functional, it lacks any balance or balancing, and there is a good few hundred quality of life traits SwSh is missing in comparison. If you want to play Pokemon competitively, buying a game made by Gamefreak is the worst way to do it.
The animations and accurate scaling of the Pokemon were the best part of Battle Revolution. It’s a shame that the game was quite barebones if you didn’t have Diamond and Pearl though.
This game was a really big part of my childhood. I’ve probably played more than 40 hours of it and still boot it up every now and then. Even if it has flaws, I still like it. It was one of my first Pokémon games ever
oh man ive played this game for hundreds of hours online. also cuz I couldnt get wifi set-up on my DS, so it was the only way for me to play online with other ppl
So important fact Gamefreak didn't make these games, but the models and animations were not made by Genius sonority. Creatures inc did and many models were ported and upscaled from stadium and coliseum. Creatures inc. Also made the models and animations for nearly every pokemon game including spin offs. Meaning they been doing what gamefreak said they would do with the x/y models for years but with better more expressive models and animations.
This was actually the first Pokemon game I ever played ( along with Diamond). I'd spend hours playing it. I get why some people don't like it, but it always gives me a sense of nostalgia hearing that announcers voice ❤
i envy you all... (incoming rant) i have the game myself, but that was a few years ago ( *long* after its release, btw); and i think it's been nearly a year since i (FINALLY) defeated Mysterial! in other words, i couldn't copy my pokemon because the Wi Fi connections i needed to do so don't exist anymore. and the pokemon i have in Pearl and HeartGold aren't exactly good. i was a child when i played those games, offensive moves only; and what good TMs i got in both games i've wasted (example: i wasted Dragon Pulse on Palkia in Pearl and that shiny Gyarados in HeartGold... poor decision), and i'm not about to replay two entire games from scratch just to TRY to get a compatible connection on my DSi! and even if i somehow managed to copy all my pokemon, i very much doubt i can teach them the TMs i can buy at Battle Revolution's shop. and the rental pokemon from the Trade Battles, well... they could have been better.
I remember starting to get into competitive Pokémon and I started stockpiling trained Pokémon hoping over the years they’d make a new battle revolution so I could make a whole bunch of trainer classes and have tournaments amongst them.. I loved creating trainers and outing them against each other in cpu matches
We need another battle revolution. I would love the feeling of battling of Battle Revolition with easy Team Building of Pokemon Showdown with all new Pokemons and beautiful animations.
I remember seeing this game for the first time at my friends house, there was 3 of us battling over the big screen, I bought this game in the coming months for myself just so I could play against myself on the big screen (literally never used it for any other reason) My mate who introduced the game to me passed away from cancer a few years later, this game has always had a special connection with me
My SoulSilver data got corrupted back in 2012, but all my Pokemon were still kicking in Battle Revolution. While I can't transfer them into any man series game, it's still good that they're not all dead, but only mostly dead.
It's the Stadium format seemingly done right -- the 3D games made them osbolete but it's a pretty exciting time before watching gameplay videos of PBR as we never had Pokemon as "real" as they are without it.
They have had like 8 years to make battles look better. I get it x and y was there first attempt so that's fine but this is the switch but yeah that's it.
@@antonioiniguez1615 Use your words. Disagreeing just to disagree just makes you sound like an ass. Friendly advice as someone who agrees with you. :-P
MJSoutherland: How do you define battles looking better? The polygon counts and textures are much better in the newer games. As far as the animations are concerned, Sword and Shield are better in that they don't pad out the game time nearly as much. While big fights were awesome in these older 3D games, fighting grunts was terrible because what should have been a 2-3 minute battle would take 10+ minutes or more. I honestly don't think I could even finish a mainline series game with that animation style.
Well okay, some of the animations are bad. That is what I was referring to so I should've cleared that up more. But things like pyro ball , snipe shot , drum beating look nice and then we have things like tackle which is quick attack without the animations. So yeah. *Also I dont think swsh are "horrible" or they make pokemon horrible.
You forgot about some cups having restrictions. For example: I think there was one cup were you could only use Pokémon with their pre-evolve forms. Or one were only cute Pokémon were allowed
I liked this game for being the first game in the series to have customizable avatars, long before it became a staple in the main series. And it was also the last game to grace us with free battle, which was a missed mode from the classic Stadium games on the N64. I miss building multiple teams and fighting against them. Battling friends is fun, playing online is cool, but the ability to pit one team of yours against another team of yours (one of them being controlled by a CPU) is a missed feature in the series.
One of my christmas gifts from my grandparents was battle revolution's guidebook...i didnt even have a wii! but the guide had a full pokedex of 3d models and i loved it
One of my favorite Pokémon games, the difficulty was great and having your many Pokémon transferred over to compete in cool tournament styles such as the neon colosseum and waterfall colosseum. PWT from black/white2 was the closest we had to exciting tournament battles since this game.
To be fair the "graphics" were definitely not as good as SwSh (much less polygons and not in HD), but the atmosphere is a lot better with much smoother animation
Most of genius sonority’s staff including James turner of course were absorbed into game freak so it’s not that far fetched to ask that. James turner was the art director for these games I wonder why sword and shield feels so different
Different develop team too. Creatures Inc. actually had their hands involved in Pokémon models and animations in SWSH more than ever (you can compare the model and animation directors in the credits!). Genius Sonority just had a better development team!
You can grind your way through the game with rental passes. You can trade pokemon in Trade Battle, until you have decent ones, but still no legendary. Yet, with this method, it is possible to beat Mysterial set 8. Super satisfying.
As a player of this game and around that age group here's what I think is important to add: the rental teams were the ones you are meant to use for the campaign I remember it was like the perfect difficulty. It was the middle evolutions of the sinnoh starters and luxio staravia and gabite I think
I remember a lot of people had issues with this game back then. Even then, the graphics and visuals were extremely good for its time. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Honestly, I have pretty fond memories of the online for this game. I never cared about the legendary ban because I never used them. But this was basically the first time we had online matchmaking for pokemon battles, and it looked fantastic the entire time. Always picked Sunset Coliseum because the music there absolutely bangs. I remember the arenas leading up to the final being amusing enough to keep trudging through, and the final event against the coliseum master or whatever his name was being outright unfair, but definitely a worthy challenge for the end of the game. Honestly, the biggest thing that annoyed me about this game was the fact that it never got any sort of "platinum patch". Would it have been so hard to put a patch on the platinum cartridge that'd upload all the new platinum forms to the wii's hard drive? Also, the complete lack of a gen5 game wound up making that the only gen with no 3d representative, so that kinda sucked.
These animations are cool for your first playthrough but after that your gonna find yourself mashing the a button trying to make these long ass animations go faster.
This era of Pokemon was the pinnacle for me. Gen 4 (and playing Pokemon on the DS for the first time) quickly became the most fun I'd had with the story and solo experience, and then I got to mess around with it at school with some friends whenever we had time, usually outdoors during break times. It's also the first gen I tried to play competitively in, and taking those teams I made to Battle Revolution felt amazing. Pearl and Diamond felt incredibly cozy to play in and had so much charm to them, and Battle Revolution really elevated the experience to an epic level. Man, I miss those days.
We need another battle sim just like Pokemon showdown but actually made by the Pokemon company. With a Tournament feature Nintendo's gonna get everyone's money.
PBR never hid what it was - a good lookin battle simulator. Back of the box tells you this. It was just for visual battles & it delivered. Can sugarcoat it all you want but it did a much better job w/ animation than main 3D titles we got. If it could be done then it could be done now
I just want to say thank you so much for making this video! I remember playing this game all the time as a kid and a year after I first got it I realized I could put my Platinum team on it. Your analysis was well organized and brought up the negatives and positives of the game. These games got a lot of hate but honestly they made me a much better Pokémon trainer and grew my love for 3D animation
@Thedudeacrossthestreet Have you even look into the Sword and Shield games? Compare them to Battle Revolution and the 3DS mainline games then come back.
I got this gane and mario strikers when I first got my wii and freaking loved it . I was so into pokemon at the time and had lots of pokemon trained to lv 100 over years and multiple games . Seeing all of them and moves in 3d with such good music and coloseums was just so mesmerizing . My neighbor Had an open wifi that allowed me to battle online and I did shoot many 2v2 pick 4 battles and would train pokemon On the ds to for that.
This was my favorite Pokemon game lol I spend hours on watching battles back then, this concept is so fun although it didn't age all too well imo. And yes the animations were so damn expressive and beautiful, that's probably the reason why it was so fun and never got boring (at least to me).
I wish they would “remake” this game for the Switch. Keep it separate from the main series games, with the only thing connecting them are copying your Pokemon over from HOME, SWSH, or LGPE. Utilize some the employees from GS (who are clearly still connected with Game Freak, as they have developed Pokémon Shuffle and Cafe Mix recently) and hire new people (they definitely have the money but refuse to spend it) and put together a team that specifies in creating this same game with sharpened models and animations. Purely battling, no set story line, just online battles with a variety of rule sets. Put all the gimmicks together - for example, individual rule sets that allow you to use Dynamax only, Megas only, or Z-moves only - but never at the same time (Megas will never face Dynamax, etc), that way it’s a bit easier to distinguish what’s going on. Yes it will take time to make 1,000+ models and animations but no one asked for a Pokémon game every year! It probably won’t happen though, because Battle Revolution didn’t do well in sales, so they won’t want to repeat a similar game, but I think a lot of the fans are upset enough with the current games’ animations that this could work.
I have INCREDIBLY fond memories of this game and was SO excited to get it for Christmas the year it came out. I just picked up this game recently and it does have a lot of flaws, but I do love it still for all its good qualities. I sorely miss the online battles now even though the system was pretty broken lol, but I just keep coming back to this game every once in a while... I really have a soft spot for it
I loved PBR. I made my mom buy it for me on the Wii and still own it today. I love the unique battle styles. I still cry trying to beat the gamble Colosseum. Haha I miss the announcer TTvTT
I remember playing this game on the wii when I was little all the time against my cousin and even if it isn't a good game or great game It will still always be one of my favorites. ... :)
I still play this game occasionally with the heartfelt file that I have saved on it. The announcer and stadiums are great! Also the little cup stadium is probably my favorite
I mostly just played this for 1. The absolute 🔥 soundtrack 2. Gen 4 battles on the big screen 3. Transferring items to my games like several Brick Break TMs
9:50 If PBR came out alongside Sword and Shield, I would be inclined to agree. But remember, focused on one thing or not, PBR came out over 10 years before Sword and Shield. TPC could’ve easily taken cues from PBR (and by extension, Genius Sonority), since the Switch, contrary to what defenders would have you believe, can have good quality animations in addition to having an adventure aspect in the game. Heck, Colosseum and XD had this exact combination, and they came out way earlier than PBR did.
I will always love this game, the graphics, the music, the gimmicks, just a ton of nostalgia for me. Plus yes grinding through the beginning sucks, but once you get past that, the battles get genuinely difficult and you face just random regular trainers who use box art legendaries. It’s genuinely an awesome experience because all of the teams in the Rank 8 battles (the highest rank) are competitively built, fully utilizing gimmicks like toxic stall and weather to the best of their ability and using incredibly strong Pokémon. Again, grinding through the starting portion sucks, but that has always been a problem for Pokémon. The individual gimmicks of the colosseum and seeing opposing trainers wield legendaries like it’s some regular thing will always make me happy
I would so LOVE to see a new game like this that syncs up to your Pokémon Home account and lets you make teams from that, allowing all Pokémon and all moves
Pokemon Battle Revolution had the potential to be a great game especially with your Pokemon from the main games, and even with its drawbacks, it was a fun experience. First Wii game to have WiFi as well
I remember this game. It was Christmas, and my parents got us a Wii with a few used games. PBR was one of them. Until today, I had no clue you could port pokemon over from DPP! That would have been neat
I love the battles and the commentator in Battle Revolution!! :)) I'm just wondering... would the same animations now or with Gen 9 be twice as much work, because we'll have twice as much Pokemon then?
Battle revolution will always be my favourite pokemon console game hands down. First game I played where I could play a character the same colour as me, and have it be "me"
as much as do like a new universal battle sim on the switch but at the same i don't see any reason why it needs to exist other than TPC to file a ceast and desist to showdown.
Why would pkmn not capitalize off a game like that. Considering from this point not all pokemon are going to be in the games this is more time to do this than ever. There's no reason for it to not exist
@@4everzard Not Showdown fans. There is no balancing and a huge lack of features if you trust Nintendo. Not to mention having completely atrocious net-code because Nintendo lives in the 90's to this day.
I dont see them make another on of these tbf. We've already got pokemon showdown which is basically a battle simulator just like the pokemon colossuem. Unless you want better animations and graphics which is irrelevant when your comparing pokemon colossuem to a website made by a unoffical pokemon format
One of my favorite aspect of battle revolution is when you can transfer magmortar and electivire from BR to D/P/Pt. I grew up playing pokmeon alone and didn’t have anyone to trade with so having these ‘mons was something I really cherished.
I loved it from day one even with the limited content. When I got Pearl it became even better, and then, the game became all the worth it for me when I modded a savegame with all pokemons to have 493 rentals to pick from a la Pokemon Stadium to duke it out with friends. I loved it
I always played with Rental Passes on one file to get all the character stuff, and I'll eventually transfer my stuff from SoulSilver to the file so that eventually I'll have *the ultimate Battle Revolution competitive setup.* Also Neon Colosseum is trash.
"once the 3D effects wear off you're really stuck with a bare bones $60 game" people play Battle Revolution for the battles like Battle Frontier which everyone keeps asking for them to bring back. the only way you would think that is if you're just playing for story. "I wish Master rank was automatically unlocked" you probably didn't know this but once you beat a stadium you've already beat it gets harder each stadium goes up to rank 8. Rank 5 is when you can start using your in-game team because they're too strong for rental Pokemon. Post game is basically Rank 8 be harder. "In game team The only viable way to play this game" I beat this whole game with Nate's team without the other rental passes as a kid. It's only unviable when you enter Rank 5-8 battles and post game. "They didn't record that many voice lines" you really expect them to do multiple voice lines for same move? do you know how many moves there are in Pokemon lol I'm just surprised they did voice lines for every move in general
