As a Western European, I can understand the German schizophrenia. We all wanted to push Germany into a weaker bicycling version of the Netherlands for a while there, yet still demand of them to "just effing wake up!!!" now.

To be fair... the Leopard 1s were in a mothball state and everyone was very upfront about how long it would take to make them operational. All of this was covered by DW a year ago...

about those leopard ones, they might be old and 'only' have an edge on the older other tanks but they are just as capable in terms of providing heavy direct fire support. if you want to kill a tank, you can kill a tank. but it becomes a lot easier to push trough when you've got more than a couple

Leopards had stumbled early on, but further in they are very effective and the fastest tank among the western supplied tanks. Panzerfaust 3 is an underrated monster of a tank killer (and bunker buster) But so far the two MVP's of Germany have been the Gepard and the Panzerhaubitze 2000 systems. Those are two systems where German engineering truly shines. If only some units of Ukranians got their hands on G-36 rifles, that would have been the icing on top. But who knows, maybe this Christmas Santa Schultz will be generous!

There are plenty of legitimate bureaucratic reasons, but it's pretty obvious Germany has also got some fifth column issues in its political ranks. They know that advanced weapons are less than useless unless available in sufficient numbers to fill out an integrated response.

It’s crazy how effective Cold War era and even WW1 and WW2 weapons are today. A water cooled maxim gun in 7.62x54r is still very capable of sustained fire protecting a trench and it’s over 100 years old

The narrative of reserved Germany is grossly wrong. Of all Western European countries, Germany invests the most per capita (with the exception of the UK). Selensky should ring the bell in Madrid, Paris and Rome. There the help is much smaller. That with the international pressure on Germany regarding tank deliveries is only half the truth. Germany redirected this pressure to the USA: Only if Abrams are also delivered, then also Leo 2s. And that was very reasonable.

The biggest problem is that there is still no major war size crash program to ramp up ammunition and barrel production, including building new factories. Even if the Russian regime came to its senses (unlikely) it would take a decade to refill Nato stocks to a level matching the new conditions. Therefore there isn't really a risk of investing to much in that. You don't need Arrow 3 if you don't have the most important ammunitions to fight for a week -- while the idea was to make it long enough to ramp up production then. There is a lot wrong with U.S. military spending, but keeping proper stocks of the main types of ammunitions is not one of them. What is the worth of any system if you cannot use it because you run out of ammunitions before the war really started?

Top arms exporters in Europe are: France, Germany, UK,Spain Italy and Netherlands. They are also part of the top 10 in the world. They are the one who can and should help Ukraine.

The Key to any Offensive and Counteroffensive is Air Support, without proper air support, ground forces are forced to move slowly on the battlefield, look at how the US and UK Fighter Bombers decimated German Armor all over Normandy as an example.

It is intellectually dishonest to say that Germany has been slow to support Ukraine because it has to weigh the nuclear component of the NATO/Russia rivalry. The UK has to weight that same component. France has to do that too... they both sent tanks to Ukraine before Germany. Berlin merely stomped its feet demanding US tanks too before it could do anything because Germany wants to be dead last in making any moves. France and UK have sent Storm Shadow, Germany is still looking for ways to stall on Taurus just as they've looked to stall on every decision. The problem here is that Germany does not want to make difficult choices or show any semblance of leadership.

DE thought Russia was too closely tied to the liberal trade block to return to 19th century imperialism. DE followed USA for leadership, and we slow-walked. Peacetime armies are more impressive on paper than reality. DE's leadership cares more about post-Putin relations than Ukraine territorial integrity. Hard to decide: saying the aid arrived and confessing it is useless or saying you are too stingy and don't give enough.
