Someone has been using minoxidil for 2 years. It worked perfectly well before eventually stopping altogether. They want to stop minoxidil and undergo a hair transplant. They want to know if 2 months is enough time to allow all the regrown hair to fall out, and for the doctor to see their worst case scenario.
New York hair restoration specialist Amiya Prasad, M.D. discusses this person’s concerns in this video, and explains why it is important to have a hair loss stabilization strategy regardless of whether one is undergoing a hair transplant or not; and how Hair Regeneration can help improve the results of hair transplants:
1:41 - Dr. Prasad details his background training in cosmetic oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as his experience as a hair loss specialist and founder of TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration Centers
2:48 - How hair loss is a progressive condition, and how hair loss medication is a means of managing hair loss and not really stopping it
3:38 - How it is common to experience slow progressive loss of perception of effectiveness of minoxidil
4:13 - Why finasteride is more beneficial and lasts longer than minoxidil
4:59 - The development of the Hair Regeneration treatment and how it works to stop hair loss progression
6:00 - The importance of maximizing lifespan of existing hair, in spite of getting a hair transplant
6:49 - How Hair Regeneration is most ideal for people with moderate degree of hair loss and moderate hair loss progression
7:34 - Dr. Prasad explains the possible reason why minoxidil no longer has an effect in this person’s case
7:57 - What happens to existing wispier hairs during a hair transplant
8:20 - The importance of discussing a hair loss stabilization strategy with your doctor
8:44 - How Hair Regeneration can also help people who’ve had hair transplants by improving healing of hair grafts
9:13 - Dr. Prasad’s recommendation

Hi Сиёвуш Содиков, There is no set time for minoxidil to stop working as it does vary with individuals. However, there are other hair loss treatments where minoxidil use is not needed. You can refer to this more recent video about it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T5iPdCfZ2Ng.html

Hi Dr.Prasad - I'm at the early stages of hair loss, and I've recently started using Minoxidil. I'm reluctant to use Finasteride to be honest, and would like to use other hair management methods. What do you think of the effectiveness of laser helmets?
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 2 года назад
Hi D G, I don't think low level laser light therapy is effective at all in treating the genetic causes of hair loss. Finasteride is widely used safely around the world, but there is a vocal minority who talk about very rare side effects. You can refer to these videos about the different factors of male pattern hair loss, and how they are treated; the importance of finasteride; the limitations of minoxidil; and why I don't find LLLT effective: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d0tddJt6OME.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fLSB-tE0gco.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sv82XSpQfnI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ozrIq7fO0FM.html

Sir, Please talk about fenastride and it's effects on testosterone levels in men
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 3 года назад
Hi czxxclz xx, Finasteride does not interfere with testosterone levels. Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This is why finasteride is referred to as a DHT-blocker. Men with a scalp sensitivity to DHT experience progressive hair thinning, so finasteride slows hair thinning. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@rajafrancis4123, Minoxidil doesn't treat DHT, and finasteride is not a blood thinner, so you will not have the same problem with finasteride as minoxidil. Finasteride requires a doctor's prescription before you take it, but it is 1mg daily. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD

Hi fazlan ameer, Propecia is effective at blocking DHT formation, but it will slow hair thinning, but not stop it completely. Make sure you are taking the full 1mg dose daily. It may take more time to be effective, and you do need to continuously take it to block DHT formation. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but delays the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. If you want to stimulate hair growth and thicken thinning hair, look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. However, it's important to understand that all hair loss treatments are about management, as there is no cure for hair loss. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 4 года назад
Hi Himanshu Shukla, It's highly unlikely because if you have a receding hairline in your 20s, you may have male pattern hair loss. Finasteride usually slows hair thinning due to male pattern hair loss, and the effects of minoxidil are not sustainable long-term. Keep in mind that male pattern hair loss is a genetic condition hardwired into the DNA, so it can be managed to increase hair thickness and scalp coverage, but it cannot be cured or reversed outright. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi, I am on dialysis and I did a hair transplant but my results are less than spectacular. They advised me at the hair restoration clinic not to use minoxidil. I did use it 3 months post operation. It has been 4 months now on Minox and my hair is still shedding...and it is really thin. Is that normal? What should I do? Thanks.
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Pepe Onzima, Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. When you stop using minoxidil, or it stops being effective, a sudden hair shed can occur. I advise that you consider a DHT-blocker like finasteride to slow progressive hair thinning. I do think finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning, and it can be used long-term more predictably. There is normally no issues with a DHT-blocker if you are currently on dialysis, but you should confirm it with your doctor. If you want to thicken thinning native hair, and stimulate hair growth from dormant follicles, look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 7 лет назад
Hi Saba Saliba, Finasteride is a systemic drug that needs to enter the bloodstream to block DHT formation, so it is much more effective as a 1mg pill taken daily than as a topical. Finasteride generally works better than minoxidil. I hope this clarifies things for you.

How long should I wait to start using topical minoxidil again and should I even use minoxidil on the area of my transplanted hairs?
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Grant Gucker, I think it's more important for you to continue finasteride to block DHT, and slow thinning of your native hair. While finasteride may not have thickened your hair, it more than likely slowed your hair loss progression so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. PRP alone also doesn't do much besides stimulate short-term hair growth, so I don't use it alone in my practice for hair loss treatment. Treatment is not needed for your transplanted hairs that should be genetically resistant to hair thinning, if taken from the permanent zone, but treatment is needed to slow thinning of your native hair, which are higher in number than transplanted hair. You can see the results of our PRP+ACell treatment for thickening thinning native hair, improving hair graft survival, improving graft healing, and stimulating growth from dormant hair follicles. Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil altogether. If you want to start with minoxidil again after your transplant, consult with your transplant surgeon as they know the details of your surgery, and the current status of your scalp healing. I hope this helps you.

Hi Tyler Vasquez, You shouldn't worry about it too much as minoxidil stops working for most people, even if they had initial benefit from it. Gains from continued use of minoxidil are easily lost shortly after stopping using the drug, so that's a frustration and cost you are avoiding. Drugs like finasteride more directly treat the cause of male pattern hair loss, and our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients can all stop or avoid using minoxidil completely. I hope this helps you.

Hey, im 21 and have been taking finasteride for close to 7 months. However I have not seen any improvements, instead seeing continued shedding from N2 to N2.5. Does this indicate I am non responsive to finasteride? Should I add minoxodil to my regime as I have heard they work well together? Alternately I have considered switching to Dutasteride- What are your views on this switch and/or what would you recommend I try next
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Luke Unger, Hair shedding is different than pattern hair loss, because pattern hair loss is gradual hair thinning. If you have hair thinning, then finasteride may still be working if it's slowing it down. Finasteride will not significantly thicken your hair, if that's what you are expecting. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. If you want to thicken thinning hair and stimulate hair growth, look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in my videos. For someone your age, Hair Regeneration can work well alongside finasteride, and minoxidil won't be needed. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 3 года назад
Hi Tanhiro Sawaranaida, The effects of minoxidil are not likely to last a lifetime. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. If you have male pattern hair loss starting in your 20s or younger, you are likely highly DHT-sensitive, and need a DHT-blocker like finasteride to control it, and slow hair thinning. The TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment can thicken thinning hair, and stimulate growth from dormant hair follicles, but it cannot block DHT-formation. It is important you have a proper diagnosis for male pattern hair loss before having prescription treatment. You can refer to this video about the different hair loss factors in men, and how they can be treated - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d0tddJt6OME.html

Hello, and thanks for the informative video. I personally think that I will go through hair loss. Recently I have noticed receding hairline on the top left and right of my head. My hair is still thick and it somehow doesn't feel like it would go through some progress. I feel insecure about what is going on currently, but at the same time, I heard people saying its normal for the hairline to recede a little over time. You have to know that I am just 18 years old and in my family, talking about my grandpas, balding is a common thingy. Thus I am concerned and I don't really know where to start. Some say if you notice some hair loss (even if you're not sure yet), instantly start with fighting it, before it is too late and too much hair is gone. My question for you is, should I start doing something or probably wait for another couple of weeks in the hope its nothing dramatic? Thank you once again for the video, and have a nice day everyone.

Hi Himagaran Murugaiah, 1. The treatment is applied to all the thinning areas of your head. We do a microscopic exam on your scalp before treatment so we know exactly where you are thinning before we do the treatment, and you may be thinning in areas you didn't previously notice. 2. Yes, you can use your fingers to spread the minoxidil. 3. You have to keep using minoxidil if you are using minoxidil alone. Minoxidil doesn't thicken hair, but it delays the natural hair shedding cycle, so if you stop using it, you can get a sudden shed of hair. However, Hair Regeneration patients after the treatment can stop using minoxidil, or are weaned off minoxidil to prevent a sudden shed. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi thanks for the reply, My dermatologist recommended me (Scino 5 Minoxidil Topical Solution USP 5%, a shampoo with some pills). 3rd point - how can i wean off or stop minoxidil if i suddenly lose the newly grown hair? It seems to be a lifetime expenditure. I'm seeking a permanent solution.
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 6 лет назад
Hi Himagaran Murugaiah, The Hair Regeneration injection treatment featured in the video lasts 3-5 years, depending on the patient's pattern of hair loss. It's only after this treatment that you can go off minoxidil. It's not clear from your question or profile if you are male or female, so I'm not sure if DHT-blockers apply to you. There are no permanent solutions for hair loss because pattern hair loss is hardwired into your genetics, so it can be managed, but it can't be cured. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@@AmiyaPrasadMD it's not permanent though...... Consider dropping your costs for this treatment as it's not permanent.
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 4 года назад
Hi Colm VD, You don't lose what you gain with the TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment after 3-5 years, as this treatment does not work like minoxidil. The treatment gives you a healthier growth cycle of your native hair, thickens thinning hair, and stimulates growth from dormant hair follicles, which hair transplants do not treat at all. Hair transplants do not treat native hair at all, so while grafts from the true donor area remain, the native hair around them are still prone to thinning. Also, there isn't enough donor area to cover your scalp, and hair transplants are technically impossible to achieve the same density of native hair. There are no permanent treatments for pattern hair loss as that would imply a cure. There is no cure for pattern hair loss as it's a genetic condition hardwired into your DNA. Pattern hair loss is managed, not cured, but it can be managed so you have as much hair coverage as possible, for as long as possible. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi UK will RULE, Finasteride is meant to slow hair thinning due to DHT-sensitivity, not to stop hair shedding. Hair shedding of 50-100 hairs a day is completely normal, and the hair grows back. Pattern hair loss is when the hair grows back thinner. Finasteride is a prescription drug, so it should have been prescribed only if you are male and are suffering from progressive hair thinning. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Rym Rym, Teleogen effluvium doesn't normally require treatment for shed hair to grow back. Minoxidil can be counterintuitive since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. If you want my recommendations for treatment, I would have to examine and diagnosed your scalp for progressive hair thinning first. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Some studies say only 6 prp sessions should be taken in one year time?...and what should be the time gap from one prp session to other
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi VarunShingari, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, the number of sessions needed does vary, and the longevity of results is unpredictable. Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment for most patients, and can last up to 5 years and beyond, depending on the aggressiveness of the hair loss pattern. You don't need repeat injections periodically, and many older Hair Regeneration patients don’t need maintenance drugs like finasteride, but I prescribe finasteride for our younger male patients with very early and aggressive hair loss due to high DHT-sensitivity as Hair Regeneration is not a DHT-blocker. PRP injections for hair loss are needed indefinitely. Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil completely, or be weaned off it to prevent a sudden hair shed.

I used finasteride from 23-30 it worked perfectly fine for me, I lost maybe 1% in those 7 years and I was NW1. Then I took a break from it because of the negative press. After this one year break I noticed recession again and went back on but now after 9 months my hair is still thinning. Does this mean it has stopped working for me? Will I lose all the hairs I maintained because of this one year break? How can I determine if I will have the same results now?
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 4 года назад
Hi iamtherobber, If finasteride was working well for you, and you didn't have any side effects, you should have continued it. Despite negative press, side effects are still rare as they only occur in about 2% of men taking it. Finasteride slows hair thinning, but doesn't stop it completely. Your DHT level increased while you stopped taking it, so it will take some time for DHT level to be lowered again. It isn't likely you will get the same result as before because hair thinning is progressive. However, you can see in this video that we have thickened thinning hair, and stimulated growth from dormant hair follicles for men who were previously on finasteride alone - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4YowPNRsv6I.html

Hi farith aqmal. We don't currently offer the treatment in Malaysia, but we do have many Malaysian patients as well as patients from around Asian coming to the US for treatment. Since it is a non-surgical treatment with little to no recovery time, and in many cases no additional treatment, you don't need an extended stay in the US. Hi Puu RR!, I started prescribing finasteride in 1997, and have had patients who have been on it that long. The actual cases of sexual side effects are extremely rare, and problems linked to finasteride can happen from more common causes such as lack of sleep, exercise, and stress. Of the very few of my patients who reported side effects, all of them were resolved by stopping the drug or addressing factors that affected their general health. None of my finasteride patients in 20 years suffered permanent sexual side effects. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi andreas skagos, Minoxidil does have a tendency to lose effectiveness after some time. I do find that treatments like Hair Regeneration and DHT-blockers like finasteride are more effective than minoxidil, and they can also be used long-term, unlike minoxidil. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, fine hairs gained from minoxidil can shed when you stop using it, or when the effects wane. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Harry's Football School, Yes it will affect both transplanted and native hair. However, minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. Finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning, and it can be used long-term more predictably. Hi body fitness, The TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment has to be done in our offices in the US. Many patients actually get back on the plane or train, or drive back home the same day as treatment, but to be sure you could do this for a flight, I would assess your general health condition first. @AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Bell, I think it's more important to be on finasteride prior to and after a hair transplant to control DHT and hair loss progression. Hair prevented from shedding due to minoxidil can shed at anytime, before or after a transplant, and the shedding may cause additional distress to you because you may think it's due to the transplant. I hope this clarifies things for you.

How long after the HT., should one use Minoxidil?
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi zyou8er, You have to keep using minoxidil indefinitely or you will lose its effects, and stopping it may cause a sudden hair shed. It's more important to use a DHT-blocker like finasteride after a hair transplant to slow hair thinning. Hair transplants don't stop progressive hair loss, so your native hair will continue to thin without treatment. Minoxidil delays hair shedding, and prolongs the hair growth cycle so it appears you have more hair on your head, but it does not treat hair thinning or block DHT. The effects of minoxidil can disappear soon after stopping it. Often, the effects of minoxidil wane over time, even if you keep using it daily. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi AVICIIZ, Minoxidil doesn't make thinning hair thicker. It is mostly for delaying the hair shedding cycle, and extending the growth cycle so you appear to have more on your head, but this growth can shed if you stop using it, or if you've been using it for a long time. If you have male pattern hair loss, I suggest you look into other treatments that treat it more directly, such as DHT-blockers like finasteride to slow hair thinning, and the Hair Regeneration treatment to thicken thinning hair, and stimulate hair growth from dormant hair follicles. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi w11917, It isn't likely your hormone replacement therapy is causing your hair loss because you now have more DHT. You will need to see a doctor, perhaps your endocrinologist, about the cause of your hair shedding. Severe stress is a common cause of hair shedding, but to confirm it you do need a workup with your doctor. I hope this helps you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Naveen Naveenhp, I don't prefer any brand of minoxidil over another, but I do suggest you find other treatments besides minoxidil for treatment of pattern hair loss, like finasteride for men, and the Hair Regeneration treatment for men and women featured in the video. Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil altogether. I hope this clarifies things for you.

I don't have hair fall But my friend give me a bottle minoxidil 14.5% I use that 2 months then I leve this After that I loss daily 350 to400 hairs per day in my room full of hair now my 2 sides are getting back any way to stop that effect and grow back 2 years

@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Bhavana studios, Minoxidil 14.5% is only available through a doctor's office, and you should not have used it. Minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. However, if you stop using it, or it stops being effective, you can experience a sudden and severe shedding of hair. You should grow the shed hair back after some time, but I hope you stop using prescription medication without a doctor's advice.

Sir, does topical finestoride cause sexual side effect
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Kmanju kamath, The chances of sexual side effects from oral finasteride are only about 2%, so it's very rare to have them. I generally don't recommend topical finasteride as DHT is in the bloodstream, so oral medication is more effective at blocking it systemically. I hope this clarifies things for you.

sir is prp permanent?? My hair r breacking down and not grow long again.what can I do now....I am 21years old.and never used minoxidil or finesteride...
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 6 лет назад
Hi Syed Saidur Rahman, PRP and other hair loss treatments including hair transplant are not permanent because pattern hair loss is progressive, and embedded in your genetics. I suggest you see a doctor for diagnosis, and start with finasteride as you will be highly DHT-sensitive if you have pattern hair loss at your age, and blocking DHT formation can slow hair thinning. I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. You don't need repeat injections periodically, and many older Hair Regeneration patients don’t need maintenance drugs like finasteride, but finasteride can concurrently help younger male patients with very early and aggressive hair loss. PRP injections for hair loss are needed indefinitely.

Sir what will happen if I use it more than a year ?
@AmiyaPrasadMD
@AmiyaPrasadMD 5 лет назад
Hi Navin Singh, You can watch the video to see how minoxidil effectiveness does wane over time, but timing depends on the person. If you stop using minoxidl, the hair delayed from shedding will shed, and you lose its effects of providing more scalp coverage. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@@AmiyaPrasadMD Sir , No video I found on internet that gives me detail that what will happen on hair if I use minoxidil more than a year. I'm using from last three months and I can see the results and I have decided to continue it for 2 years without a single day gap. But I didn't got any article on prolong use of miNoxidil , what will be happen then , side effect or any other effect.
