How Elite Power Brokers Corrupt our Finances, Freedom, and Security

New Economic Thinking

From the Tea Party to Occupy Wall Street, however divergent their political views, these groups seem united by one thing: outrage over a system of power and influence that only serves the interests of a small number of corrupt elites. Increasingly, protesters on both ends of the political spectrum and the media are using the word “corrupt” to describe an illusory system of power that has shed any accountability to those it was meant to help and govern. In her new book, Janine Wedel, a university professor in the School of Public Policy at George Mason University and a grantee of the Institute for New Economic Thinking, charts a fast-evolving system of power and influence that is utterly unaccountable to those it is supposed to serve, largely because “we the public” has an information problem. Who is accountable? What are the remedies available to the average citizen?
If there is accountability, it is in places which are not socially represented or publicly accessible. The elites have access to these “silos” of power, because they can connect the dots. The average citizen cannot. As they languish, one thing flourishes: a new, insidious form of corruption practiced by players cutting across boundaries and plying influence with unprecedented ease.
The hallmark of this alarming "new corruption" is the violation of public trust. Professor Wedel takes us far beyond the usual targets: money's corrupting effect on politics, K Street lobbyists, bad-apple politicians who take bribes. While all those are important, the new corruption's sweep is broader and its practitioners, even when they are named, can't be shamed. They believe they can self-police, because their motives are pure and their integrity beyond questioning. And even when their motives are not pure, it doesn’t serve today’s technocrats to rock the boat by punishing these elites. And those guilty of wrongdoing are often in a position to manipulate media and shape the story to make it appear as if they are indeed selfless public servants.
In this new world, academics, Wall Street bankers, lawyers, retired generals, even former Presidents and Prime Ministers exploit their prestige as if it were a commodity, some turning themselves into one-man brands. Think tanks, once the source of sober-minded studies, often now act as bullhorns for the powerful. Wall Street, unbowed by the 2008 crash, remains free to "innovate" us into the next financial disaster after fighting a stealth regulatory battle.
Part of today’s challenge is that the institutions that we grew up with are completely different animals. Even though a bank is still called “a bank”, but it is very different institution than was the case even 15 years ago. Likewise with government. Three-quarters of people who work for “the public sector” today are actually still in the private sector. They work as private contractors or consultants. This places them beyond the scope of proper public scrutiny, and further undermines accountability. Indeed, Wedel notes that the image of the so-called “revolving door” is probably inaccurate these days. The door doesn’t revolve as such, but remains perpetually open to these private elites, changing the latter’s role well beyond what we normally understand government to be.
In the interview, Wedel tries to guide us through this maze. Her message is a very unpalatable one, but it is still the case that a malady, no matter how grave, cannot be repaired without an accurate diagnosis. That diagnosis starts here in Wedel’s profound scholarship and searing insights.

@@visicircle "Responsibility in building an aggregate economic order has large functions, if only this aggregate order is to be competitive. In this case, it should make it possible to facilitate the selection of enterprises and managers. Further, it should encourage capital to be managed with all discretion. Investments are made with the greater care than the greater responsibility falls on the person responsible for these investments. Responsibility thus has an effect in preventing the waste of capital and inceptively probing markets. In addition, responsibility is important for a competitive order also because it impedes the organizational unification of other enterprises, which is caused, for example, by the desire for power. Costing becomes decisive. If you bear full responsibility for the newly acquired enterprise, then you will first accurately weigh whether it is necessary to buy this enterprise at all. But the situation is completely different if there is no full responsibility and it is possible to secure ownership of the enterprise using the “preventive” sign of limitation of liability. Forms of societies that limit liability have greatly contributed to the formation of concerns. Wherever possible, the universal significance of responsibility thus counteracts the process of concentration. Responsibility contributes to the constitution of a competitive order and to prevent the emergence of market forms alien to the system. And at the same time it is necessary in order to ensure the competition of the results of economic activity within the framework of the competitive order. Both of these effects matter. Competitive order in the absence of personal responsibility of each individual can prove to be just as ineffective as it is in the absence of sufficient forms of the market or monetary order. I remember watching a programme in the UK showing how people percieve who is trustworthy from appearance. People tended to trust the person in a lab coat or suit more than they would trust someone in a t-shirt and jeans or wearing a track suit. So it appears people automatically trust professionals or people who appear professional, it would appear that culturally we are hard wired to trust people who are percieved as professional more. This does make sense, as you would not go to a shotgun shack and buy cancer medication from a guy in a track suit or dungarees??!! People in power or as I Iike to call them masters of men, seem to know this very well. So everytime you watch the news and another expert is wheeled out to reinforce decisions made against your interests for the benefit of some Corporation or Financial Institution, just remember that expert could just be a regular smooth talking douche bag in a suit. I think people have cottoned onto the expert opinion on the news to be expert bullshit on many occassions now though, the 2008 financial crisis had them all looking like expert know nothings! People in power must be experts at thought control and how the populous percieve things on a national/global scale or they would not stay in power long.

the idea at about 15:00 evokes my interest. As a german i wouldn't have included the tea party in that argument stating that they feel like outsiders in a rigged system. but its completely right. and the same is true for the people voting for the afd over here. so i guess we gotta start building bridges by acknowledging the fact that we have the same basic problem: a system that gives a small part of the population power and influence while the problems of the many remain mostly unsolved. i read a poster on the street today: capitalism comes into being because of your lack of trying better things.

Is there a solution? Hasn't this happened over and over again through out time? Eventually there chaos, mass disruption, usually with violence then a person comes forward representing the behind the scene land owners or players ready to step into the void planned or unplanned by players to start with and the cycle starts again. Is it the human way? Psychology says people have different patterns of thoughts, beliefs and skills. Dante's Inferno speaks of the problem of peoples different views in the inferno. The Enneagram calls the different ways chief passions if one reads Gurdjieff. The bible calls them the deadly sins. What I am attempting to say is there are different base human types and each type although unique as a personality has a passion or a proclivity that does categorize them. My thought is we may need to have deeper understanding of individuals to grow a stronger and more in tune form of leadership to work on real human problems going into the future. I wish I knew how to address this ancient pattern playing out in the United States. I fear it will require more than mass dissatisfaction followed by violence. Wouldn't that be the pattern from the beginning of human time starting again?

People work for ministers and not for the ministries. A system could be created in which workers could identify working with the purpose of the institution and not the ambitions of the institution heads. But right now that is not possible and in a situation where there is a conflict in between the institution’s policies and the purposes and motivations of the institutions heads, which is very often, it must be easy for the bureaucrats to work for the department and not the department bosses. To work as in sync with the departments purposes and not the personal ambitions of the ministers. Right now it’s not possible.

Neither MMT nor Austrian Economics have a solution for this What is your solution for this? ...as the law stands A gold certificate is a promissory note. If you are a holder of a gold certificate you can use it as money. The Courts have maintained that an unconditional promise to pay is money. The Promissory Note Magic Money Tree - How the banks got rich and bought all the large corporations. Tier One: A person signs a mortgage promissory note. The signer unknowingly loans the bank the promissory note and the bank deposits that promissory note in a newly created transaction as though it was a check. The bank then issues the signer with a check drawn from that account, and he goes out and buys the house. The money to finance the house did not come from deposits. It did not come from excess reserves. It did not come from the Federal Reserve. The money came solely from the promissory note that the bank borrower from the signer / debtor. In this case the bank provided no consideration but in a successful foreclosure the bank will get a free house. The asset is the promissory note it borrowed from the signer but the liability is obscured because it is not returning the value to the owner of the promissory note. Tier Two: One promissory note create many other promissory notes. A person signs a mortgage promissory note and the bank (bank A) provides the signer with $300,000 Federal Reserve Notes (paper dollars). The signer goes out and buys a $300,000 home. The validity of the promissory is obvious because there is a promise to pay, and consideration was issued. A second Bank (Bank B) purchases the promissory note at face value. Returning the $300,000 to the first bank. The signer could turn around and rent the home and essentially make money from the house he just purchased. But the bank has the promissory note which is by law, a negotiable instrument whose value is equivalent to the that of the house itself. What can the bank do with this promissory note? The bank could deposit that promissory as if it has value, which is like cash. The bank could draw a check of $300,000 from that account and loan it to another person willing to sign a new promissory. And that new promissory note creates another promissory note ad infinitum because each promissory note is treated as cash. Or the bank could trench it and issued it for investment purposes. The investor does not have rights to the collateral just on the interest paid by the signer. Because the bank provided nothing of value in tier 1 it would be advantageous to foreclose, getting a free house in the process. In the second Tier it is equally advantageous because the initial investment of $300,000 cash money was returned. What problems do you see in this system? How can you deter acquiring rights to a house where no consideration was provided?

This falls in line with the culture of professions, wherein you need to know someone to get somewhere within an organization. This is By Design. This is elitist culture creation within the middle class profession culture. It makes it impossible to get anything done depending on many variables other than being a good applicant. Skin color, type of last name, location where you were educated, etc... are all being considered when decades ago that was illegal.

She's either nervous or inarticulate. She's inelegantly referring to the compartmentalization of knowledge. Knowledge is compartmentalized (while distributed downward) within the organization in such a way that employees might not be aware what roles they play in a larger picture. Knowledge is power. This environment extends to the public who has the least amount of information (and often the most amount of mis/dis-information). You can learn this from studying Iran-Contra's bureaucratic politics. "Structured unaccountably" stems from the distribution of responsibility within any bureaucracy. No one person can be held accountable because no one task, no one person, is contributing enough to the total operation to be considered as responsible for it. This might be the cause/effect of the construction of bureaucratic rules which distribute action outcomes away from decision makers. Again, this should immediately indicate that those either making or interpreting or conducting the rules of any bureaucracy have a perspective of the flow of information that no one else does. One thing is for sure, judging from the level of articulation in this video, corporations need significant reform as do a lot of government institutions. And probably academia. When we discuss "the game" we must make clear that we are talking about both the concealing of agendas from the public and the strategic division of responsibilities for controversial or borderline fraudulent or criminal activities along departmental/organizational borders in any kind of organization, public or private, for the advancement of the agenda. What level of the player will dictate their participatory role which is accompanied by a certain kind of critical information to the function of an organization. What her main statement here is: 'The US policy sequence is not that different from that of an ungoverned or weakly governed space.' I think that is such a funny thing to say. Those are places where government is only supposed to have a little bit of authority. The US government appears to be operated by a handful of rotating international business cartels, oil, banking, pharmaceuticals, raw materials, aero and defense, communications, media, and shipping, aided by philanthropic organizations dedicated to the principle of internationalism and a compliant research team of academics. I'd love to have a conversation with a dozen or so academics who study the compartmentalization of knowledge, banks, and intelligence. It is crazy where you can find different kinds of information cropping.

Etienne. Interesting comment. You raise some worthwhile points. Who is the 'player' you refer to? I find there is a total conflation, or confusion of public /private, corporate/federal etc. where you end up concluding that it is indeed unaccountable! ( with no player?Lol.) There has to be a term for this non position of idealogical 'twilight zone' shell game, where the peanut is not to be found under any shell, and we don't know who is playing, and who is being played.
