hey Jake my goal is to become a Software Engineer and then eventually a Software Architect, I live in the Bay Area so there are plenty of jobs. But I am having trouble choosing a major, I am a senior in hs rn so I still have a little time to decide, but it’s between Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Sci. I noticed that you said to not do Software Engineering as a major but my school, SJSU, does have an ABET accredited Software Engineering program, if that changes anything? Also it might be hard to switch to CompSci since it’s impacted. So my question was if you think it’s worth trying to switch majors to SE or CS or just stick with my declared major which is CompE? (I could switch to SE a lot easier since CE and SE are within the same college, unlike CS)

I'm taking both mechanical, mechatronics, and maybe take electrical after. I may also pursue a phd in some field of physics. I'm only doing all these as a hobby. I'm not looking a job over it and just wanted to study these courses to invent stuffs like iron man as my hobby. So, will taking all these give me enough knowledge to build stuffs like drones and AI personal assistant? And... is taking master's degree of the field will gave me more knowledge than a bachelor? What if I dropout a year before the course ends, will I miss out some very important knowledge of the field?

Hey thanks for the comment. I get a lot of questions about this sort of thing. Going through engineering and university is super hard. So the way you feel is normal. Most engineering students have doubts. They struggle. And it's easy to want to give up hope. . It's a survival mechanism. The brain burns 25% of your daily calories on average. Couple that with the stress and pressure of the rest of your life, plus engineering, and your brain is exhausted. We're designed to conserve calories by wanting to give up on the things that are mentally hard. . So what you need to do is remember why you are doing this. You're a smart person, smarter than average otherwise you wouldn't even be admitted and you wouldn't be reaching out to my on RU-vid. Engineering is something you will be proud of. You will have a better career, and one day be able to provide for your family in a way that most other educational avenues cannot. . It's alright to feel down and feel like you're struggling. I almost failed out ever semester for half on university until I got my stuff together about half way through junior year. . So you got this. Try to find students to do group study with. Try to reach out to your professors over email and ask for some Zoom meetings. Participate in online lectures or in person lectures if you are back to in person. Stay after class. And show you profs that you want to succeed. It makes a big difference. . You're going to be okay. Just keep trucking, and know that you are not alone. Ask me any questions on here that you need help with. I respond to everything and appreciate you being a part of 1% Nation. Thanks again and you got this!!

Engineering is awesome. Do you have any advice on how I can persuade my children to take up engineering? I hope to push them towards that direction while they are still in grade school.
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey Data, thanks for the question. I find there are 3 essential steps. 1. Math Confidence Being good at math and science sure comes down to some element of ability and naturally being more left brained, but at a young age math is a skill. It can be built like reading and writing and anything else. But math is different math builds like a pyramid so if a student faulters for just one of their 12 grades, by the time they get to university they are unprepared for the calculus and physics required for year 1 in engineering. So make math fun. Do a lot of it. And convince them that if they want to do anything fun for a career, they need math. 2. Visioneering In building this community for 4 years, the biggest issue is actually choosing which engineering. Students know about cool technologies and intriguing movements but there is no one connecting the dots. Want to engineer for SpaceX? Do I do aerospace engineering even though there are far less programs? Can I just do mechanical engineering? Which engineering do I do for robots? Electrical or Mechanical? Etc. So have a rough sector plan. Want to work with cars? Want to work with buildings? Want to program more? They need to know which engineering to choose. 3. Projects Wanting to be an engineer is also about fit and ensuring that they can get the incentive up for 4 years. So if a student knows why they are there and why they are working so hard, they will stick with it. So once you have a plan for their career and a rough engineering lane picked out, get them doing projects in middle and high school so they walk into engineering with momentum and advantages and they can maintain this easier in uni. I have a question for you too, and can email you links to more info. Could you email me? Thank you!! hello@jakevoorhees.com cheers !!

@@JakeVoorhees i like to learn something that is useful like Logistics and risk Management. I’m thinking Operation Research(OR) as a major and they are available major in some Universities like United States Naval Academy and Princeton University and maybe NYU though i don’t know yet that i may be accepted there since i haven’t applied yet because i haven’t done SAT but i’m still determined to go there. Speaking of Operation Research. What do you think about Interdisciplinary major like OR, Biomedical Engineering and System Engineering, are they good?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the question. I think its hard to major in OR, its more of a graduate level consideration or a career path in general. BME is okay, but I really think you should do ME and see if you like BME enough to focus on that as a concentration rather than fully commit to BME. I talk about that in this video, “Best Engineering Majors | Engineering Degree Tier List” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nfayHVJlKgQ.html . As for Systems Engineering, The Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineer (IISE) describes the focus of systems and industrial engineering as follows: “Industrial and systems engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment and energy.” . Systems engineers design and optimize complex systems. They work with an array of other technology professionals, including software engineers, hardware engineers, and programmers. . Industrial engineers manage and improve manufacturing processes and service operations. An industrial engineer is primarily concerned with finding ways to better utilize machinery, employees, and additional assets that impact operations. . I have a video on Industrial Engineering, “What Do Industrial Engineers Do?”, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XiEC6o_xlaw.html . Does this help? Do you think 32-33 is too old to become an engineer? I probably wouldn’t be done until Im 35 or 36 with the credits I have now.
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment. I get a lot of the “going back to school” questions. I think it’s a great idea, even in your 30s and 40s. So you’re already on a good path in my opinion. . Here are some more considerations. . When it comes to going back to school, the largest considerations are first outside of the school part. Can you figure out the financial part, the time management, and the lifestyle management side? . People with kids and a less flexible existing career, less financial support (less likely to have parents funding you like an 18 year old may) - it may be complex to figure out how to functionally make it happen. But in being a future engineer, you will figure this out. . Once you do, next is how much do you really want it? It is hard enough as a younger student who has academic momentum coming out of high school. Sometimes it's really hard for people to hit the books again after just a few years. If it's 10+ years, this must be more challenging. But maybe you have challenged yourself your entire life, and you're a lifelong learner and this is fine. Another pass - great. . Finally, it's very unlikely that someone going back to school can pause their life for four years and get a degree. So can you endure 6-10 years of part time school? If so, final pass. Go for it! . Let me tell you this for encouragement. All of us engineers had those 1-2 students in our classes that were 10-20 years older than everyone else. And let me tell you, those students were always A+ students and always carried the groups, had a good relationship with the professors, etc. They are more mature. They knew what they wanted. And generally they had industry and experiential advantages, such that if you can pass the aforementioned considerations, you will do great. . As for getting jobs - it is nearly the same. You will come in with maturity respect, and the various other things that are advantages for this situation. Just make sure that you are using all the cutting edge softwares and techniques because that is the one stereotype that anyone older has to face. People that older = stuck in the past. . I hope this helps, cheers and good luck. Let me know how I can help more next, and what follow up questions you have? I respond to everything, thanks!

I like to analyze the speed of things. What type of engineering suits me best?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment. Depends what you're interested in. You can measure the speed of anything. Civil engineers may measure the speed of a bridge deflections and vibration in buildings. Mechanical Engineers may measure the speed of a vehicle and fine tune the parts. Or measure air flow speed throughout a building. Maybe the manufacturing speed of parts while they are produced. Electrical Engineers may measure telecomm speeds, rate of power, electronic component speeds, and so on. You can measure the speed of anything. I think you should check out these videos to explore more about the difference types of engineering: “Best Engineering Majors | Engineering Degree Tier List” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nfayHVJlKgQ.html . “Mechanical Engineering Job Tier List” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ghxBLeEX_OM.html . “Electrical Engineering Job Tier List” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6r3hG_zA8d8.html . What do you think about Robotics Engineering?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
I think its the best sh*t ever :) I get a lot of questions about mechatronics engineering - probably more than any other subset of engineering nowadays. . I think mechatronics is the future. It is the intersection of mechanical and electrical engineering, so you can lean into either the physical design side i.e. mechanics, or the electrical engineering aspects which would include the circuitry, signals and controls, power, automation, and programming aspects. I think a mechatronics engineer who leans into the electrical engineering side of things is VERY well suited for the future. Here are some videos that you may be interested in: . “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4YjLZcQRLds.html . “Is Mechatronics Engineering a Good Career? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UkPKlA6j0f8.html . There are only 28 ABET mechatronics engineering programs in the world and just 3 in the USA. So oftentimes you have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is a great path. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. You would do that by for example, majoring in EE and taking more electronics courses and less about power or telecommunications. You would take robotics electives, signals and controls, and circuits courses, etc. Your CS related courses should revolve around mechatronics rather than something else, and so on. Computer Engineering is often a subset of Electrical Engineering. But sometimes engineers struggle to choose between ME vs EE/CPE. This video will help you decide, “Mechanical VS Electrical Engineering” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6PJ-Yw5qVsc.html . These will probably be helpful as well: “What Do Mechanical Engineers Do?” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5wEteXzhtak.html “What Do Electrical Engineers Do” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zRawKI6Qsm0.html “What Do Computer Engineers Do?” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hiL-cTbz188.html . I also ranked Mechatronics Engineering as one of the only two S-Tier Mechanical Engineering options in this video, “Mechanical Engineering Job Tier List” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ghxBLeEX_OM.html . And this video shows a Mechatronics Engineer career at, 24:08 “What Do Mechanical Engineers Actually Do?” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bssgoMZrhj0.html . Hey thanks for the comment on this. I wasn’t sure if they were moving the needle. I think I’m launching a VIP community soon with like $5/month and do streams that way, along with a monthly exclusive video or something. Would you be interested in a VIP membership? If so what would you join for? Thanks!!
