I don’t know if you’ve already made a video on it, but I’d be interested to hear about pros/cons of graduate studies in engineering and like pay differences between BS, MS, and PhD. I’m specifically an EE major, but I’m sure people interested in all different fields would be interested in a video like that. Thanks for all the awesome content!
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment. Lots of EEs get there masters degrees. About 45% of graduates are masters or PhD students. I think it’s because EE is so broad and fast moving that it’s really beneficial to get an advanced degree. You can focus on a specific niche like nano technology or Mechatronics or telecommunications or signals and controls, etc. The pros of a masters are good. You will get a little more salary but mostly it’s for the technical lead opportunities and taking control of the direction of your career. No real cons. You just want to take a research assistantship where you don’t pay or get an employer to pay. PhD is different. PhD really makes it so your career will be all about research. Or you can be a professor. Does that help and make sense? I should do a video on this :) let me know what follow up questions you have okay. Cheers thanks !!!

Hey shoutout to the millennials in here! Okay let me break this down and help you. A) How much debt from your personal 1-10 scale? 10 being super scary and it gives you anxiety all the time and 1 being you can manage it and pay it off in just a few years with no problems. B) This terror is okay. I would consider maybe industrial engineering bc its less on the heavy math side and if you already have a degree, you can get into IE programs and a lotttt of IE professionals go back to school for IE rather than major in it for undergraduate. What are you doing now? What is your degree in if you have one? And if you dont or you had to pause on school and are going back in that regard, thats okay, let me know

Hi Jake! I've been watching your videos for about a week now trying to decide weather I would like to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. I recently completed Community College and got my Computer Aided Drafting Design (AAS) Degree. I have no idea which way I would like to go with this. I Love the idea of getting outside of the office and interacting with people on a large scale as a part of Civil Engineering, but then again I have always been someone that likes to tinker with small parts and build things. I plan on Shadowing a Surveyor to see if that will help me decide between the two because my previous college professor told me a lot of the things a surveyor does is used in the day to day life of a Civil Engineer such as the basic boundaries of where you're building etc. I dropped out of college my first year as a Computer Science student so I know something along the lines of Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering aren't for me!

Hey thanks for the comment. Yeah I feel you. I think networking is one of the best career skills but it’s hard for a lot of engineers. It’s a skill though. Meaning you can work on it and become better, like a sport or any other skill. Here are some videos to help, “Student Life Tips - Networking with Professors” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_kSVvph6d_w.html “How to Network with People” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q-LIdhArFuM.html “Informational Interview Tips“ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nxUtpzPHKjc.html Here is the job fair networking playbook. 1. Have a plan. You should review and know exactly which companies will be at a job fair or event. Pick 10 companies or fewer and take 1 hour, open a google drive, and research their Linkedin and blogs and social media. Know what they are up to right now. Have things to chat about and things to relate to. 2. Resume customize. After you do this, you may even be able to cater your resume specifically to certain companies. Now you can make different versions of your resume and depending on which of the companies you speak with, you can get a resume that is better suitable to that company. 3. Ask about how those projects are going. Have something interesting to talk about. This shows you are following the company. Ask about their engineering role and career. Companies send young engineers to run the booths at job fairs. 4. Notes. Have a notebook and write down how each conversation went afterwards. Write down their name, and make sure to get their card. Journal the conversation so you can be more relatable later. They will remember you specifically if you mention exactly what you talked about. Keep in touch. Get their card and email them that evening or the next day. 5. Ask for informational interviews. I made a video about that here, “Informational Interview Tips“ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nxUtpzPHKjc.html 6. Keep in touch, and soon after that, you can ask for actual opportunities. Does this make sense? Confidence and experience cannot be taught or absorbed from content in any way. They must be learned and conducted over and over by the individual. So don't worry. Most engineers are introverts, and they just need practice. Don't worry. Just get out there and try to make things happen. Over time you'll get better and things WILL happen. Cheers let me know what sort of follow up questions you have okay? Cheers and thank you!

Hi Jake, I'm an undergrad Math Major (taking free electives in physics and comp. sci) and I'm on the fence between Mathematical Modeling and Electrical/Mechanical Engineering. The only reason I'm uncertain about Engineering is because I've never had that drive to tinker, build or break objects down as a kid. I find it very interesting to know how things work and to solve problems (solving problems is the reason for my math major), but I'm worried that because I've never done any projects or really shown a true passion for tinkering, etc. that maybe it isn't for me. Do you have any tips to help me decide through this? Of course if I were to go into the engineering field I would gain this experience, and I definitely want a hands-on career (which math modeling is likely not, assuming its more work with computers and data), but because I don't have this passion already I'm worried I may not find it. This is definitely more of an anxiety-type question of just a cluster of "what ifs", but I'm curious if you've had a similar experience? I also have interest in the skilled trades just because they are so hands-on, and frankly because of that I do think engineering would be a practical path for me. But how do you get past this fear of it not being right for you?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks so much for the comment and for stopping by. Are you thinking Math Modeling vs EE/ME for grad school? I understand your hesitation around engineering. Let me ask you this if that's okay - what is your career goal with say, maintaining the math modeling progression? If you do not do engineering, what is the baseline alternative? Feat is always going to be a part of the journey. You know whats funny? Have you ever had an exciting opportunity that also makes you nervous? Say a job interview or you're going to do something that is fun and exciting but theres a chance you could get hurt like rock climbing or sky diving or something like this? Even that excitement mixed with fear of a first date. The brain signals for excitement and fear with the exact neurochemistry. It's exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. If its good enough to get excited about, there should be just as much anxiety if it doesnt go well. Thats a good sign honestly. But a lot of people confuse this and they let that fear takeover. Rather than interpreting these signals as excitement, we can cower in fear. So dont let that be you. It sounds like you know you should try out engineering and you want to apply this math skill you have. You're just hesitant. Does this sound about right? What follow up questions or things do you have for me? Thanks!
@cheforsteph6332
@cheforsteph6332 3 года назад
@@JakeVoorhees Thank you for replying so quickly and with so much detail. Yes that sounds right, like, hit the nail on the head, right. I'm currently on track for a 5-year masters in Math (I'm a second semester sophomore). So I'm not really on a specific track for a career path, but I'm doing the Comp. Sci/Physics Electives to look more appealing to Engineering programs if I do decide on that path (and also because I like physics), Courses like: Fluid Mechanics, Statics, Thermodynamics, etc. If I were to choose the math modeling progression, I'd like to go into research on just any world issues that need solutions (obviously this is a very vague thing to say, to be honest with you I'm not totally sure where I would go with it but I have some ideas). For example, I was talking with the Chair of the Math dept. at my school, and he was telling me he had some of the same anxieties as I did (he got his BS in Physics, MS in Math, PhD in Mechanical Engineering), and he was telling me about mathematical modeling he was doing for Alzheimer's research, saying I could do more of that type of work as opposed to Engineering. This sounded very appealing because its meaningful work and that's what I was looking for in engineering, but like I said I think I would be bored sitting in front of a computer plugging in data for math modeling. Truly I just want to be able to apply my problem-solving, critical thinking, math/physics skills to real-world applications and to say that I'm doing something meaningful with my life. I do think I should give engineering a shot and yes I think you're absolutely right about me just being hesitant, I'm just young and inexperienced (19) so it's really about pushing through my anxieties for me. And what you said about "if it's good enough to get excited about, there should be just as much anxiety if it doesn't go well." I think that's a perfect way to phrase it lol. If you don't mind me asking, did you have a defining moment that helped you feel secure in your choice, or did you always know this was what you wanted to do? I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to all of these comments, it shows how much effort you put into this channel and into your viewers. It means a lot! Thank you.
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
@@cheforsteph6332 Wow so thanks for all the context. And OMG OMG please please do yourself a huge favor and keep in solid touch with the chair of your department. That person can get you into doors you cannot even imagine. I was the same as you, in terms of not being sure. I applied for EE even though the plan was civil E, and last min i switched back to Civil before school started. I thought i wanted to do transportation within civil, but you never really know this until you get to junior and you take your first specific courses. So yeah I was uncertain for 2 years or more. And then once I had some transportation stuff, it was okay. Pretty much just rolled with the punches. I think you dont really knwo what you like or dont like until you get there and do it. It's so hard to speculate based off of research and conversations. This is why pivoting in careers is so common - because its needed. Another great thing you can do is ask your Chair and whoever else you know who has had a math /engineering career, to introduce you to more people in the industry. Its great to talk to these people, just like your Chair, about job ideas and ultimately connections to industries. The more of the these people you know, the more chances you will have at internships and jobs. And finally yes, I love this community with all my heart and pour a lot of time into this because of all of you guys. So thank you so much for seeing that and saying this

@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment. Lets mostly talk about engineering vs engineering technology. BS Engineering vs Bach of Engineering is usually the same thing. It just depends on what the school calls it, the country of origin. It would be very rare for an engineering college to offer both so you have to choose BSME vs BachME for example. I often get questions about Engineering vs Engineering Technology, or if Engineering Technology is good. Sometimes people are looking for a way to be more hands on, and have never heard of Engineering Technology before. . [Note: This is not to be confused with an “Engineering Technician” which is not an engineer and someone who does not have a full engineering degree. They may have a 2 year engineering technician education or less, and are usually someone like a drafter for example. They cannot design, they cannot rise through the ranks of engineering. It is a fine starting point and entry way into engineering, but it is not an Engineer or an Engineering Technologist]. . Let's start out by talking about regular engineers. Engineers apply scientific, theoretic, and economic knowledge to research, invent, design, and build structures, devices, and systems, making for a broad discipline that encompasses specialized fields of engineering. . Want to actually design the components or pieces or engineering aspects and run the numbers? Review them? Test them? Monitor them? Redesign them? Test again? Engineering is the way. . Now, Engineering Technology is a little different. Engineering Technologists work with the implementing of those technologies. Technologists work for manufacturing firms on the construction of products, and product improvement. Most people who want to be more hands on and apply the equipment and technologies will go this route. The pay is a little less, the respect is a little less, the job outlook and prospects are less, but there are still ABET accredited programs where you can become a professional engineer. In fact there are 138 ABET accredited programs in the USA. They are real engineers! . There are many potential engineers who would rather avoid engineering entirely if they think they are destined for a life in an office for 40 hours a week always. That is the type of person who may be interested in ET. If you like engineering principles but struggle a little more with the calculus and physics, these people may consider ET. . But don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of regular engineering roles you can achieve where there is some balance of both. Where you can get in and see what’s happening on site, in the field, during manufacturing or construction, etc. It’s more about seeking out this type of role, and speaking up about your hopes and dreams throughout your career. . So with all of that being said, unless you really absolutely need to be more hands on than working in an office, and struggle with the math/physics/coding, do regular the normal engineering route. . Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have k and I can help you w those. Thanks again, I respond to all comments, cheers! 😀

Can mechanical engineer find a job in electronics, controls, power electronics etc or it is just a job for EE? Great video btw!

@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment. Yeah MEs can work in EE jobs for sure. If you have the skills, then you can get the job. More and more roles say "engineering degree" rather than a type because there can be so much overlap. The best thing for you to do as an ME is teach yourself more programming :)

Hey Jake and everyone in the comment section, So i heard Aerospace Engineer is a sub field of Mechanical Engineer? So what is Aeronautics & Astronautics then?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 года назад
Hey thanks for this question. Yes most AE engineers are actually ME engineers - I talked about that in Wissam's section. Aerospace is aeronautical and astronautical engineering. Aeronautical is within the atmosphere like jets and planes and missiles, and astronautical is outside so the space station, rockets, shuttles, and things in space - satellites. Here are my AE videos, “What is Aerospace Engineering? What do Aerospace Engineers Do?” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vDa0fB6kxVc.html . “Aerospace Engineer Interview | How To Get A Job At Boeing | How To Get A Job At Lockheed Martin” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NuPAiaonLrQ.html . “What is Combustion Engineering? | Can Mechanical Engineers Become Aerospace Engineers?” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qnXpsjZcq0k.html . I hope these help. Let me know what follow up questions you have okay and I can help you with those. I respond to everything, cheers!

Good day. I was wondering if you could do a video on the difference between a Technonlogist engineer and a technician
@JakeVoorhees

Hey thanks for the comment. It’s more about seeking out this type of role, and speaking up about your hopes and dreams throughout your career. . So with all of that being said, unless you really absolutely need to be more hands on than working in an office, and struggle with the math/physics/coding, do regular the normal engineering route. . @@JakeVoorhees Thank you so much for the reply. I really appreciate all the details and the time you took to write it. It has been very helpful! I'm actually studying for a Bsc Mechanical engineering degree through an Australian university and notices that after my degree I will have the option of becoming a Technologist under the Sydney Accord, and, in fact, it's actively encouraged by my professors so that we can gain practical knowledge to help with designing later on in our careers. I was quite misled by a friend of mine when talking about the roles of a technologist. Your message has clarified it all! also, I was wondering if you were ever thinking about making a video about Online engineering degrees? I have seen many universities and colleges offering online Bsc engineering degrees that are fully accredited, both nationally and internationally. Online learning seems so interesting to me, and I see it becoming a very common and effective way of gaining an education.

You are very welcome. I’m glad to have clarified things for you about engineering technology, etc And for online engineering degrees, sure if it’s accredited I think they are to be considered. There are some disadvantages. The most powerful relationships you can make during university are with your professors. I think it’s harder to make those remotely. I would have really struggled to passed my courses without the help of my engineering peer group. I did homework with friends. I studied with friends. I went to professor office hours, etc. I also think there’s a lot of benefit in getting to know other engineers in person. Going to in person club meeting and society meetups and engineering organization events. Job fairs are something that regular in person universities host that may not be provided in the same way via an online education. What about labs? Those can’t really be the same. What about the engineering clubs teams like steel bridge and solar power car and rocket clubs? You can’t really build projects and make things and garner experience in the same way. Engineers Without Borders wouldn’t be the same either. And for these reasons, I don’t think online degrees get the same respect. Even if they are accredited. People know it’s just not the same, especially for engineering. Does that help and make sense? I’d love to help you with any follow up questions okay? Cheers thanks for the great comment
