Most Asia colonialism stories started with establishment of trading posts by European powers to tap into lucrative local trade. These trading posts were set up through treaties or conquest. Over the years these trading posts became a source of conflict, or base for further expansion as the European powers steadily involved in local politics to protect their holdings.

@@superspies32 And it didn't prevent anything except religion (see illegal opium trade by the British). But alas the main problem of most of those countries it that they were ripe for colonization. The inefficiency and corruption in the Ming empire, the constant revolts, the court infighting, and general instability made modernization practically impossible. If somehow they would have managed to modernize (remove the Empress Dowager in her later years for her son Emperor Tongzhi, who wanted to modernize and support him) probably China would have been a superpower 100 year ago already.

It’s astounding how everything was run when communication was so slow back then. Whatever you think of empires you have to admit it’s impressive.
@Warmaker01
@Warmaker01 2 года назад
It's not too surprising, really. You can look at past ancient or medieval empires where armies were sent off for conquest. This is your mission. These are your men and resources. Get it done. The Romans sent generals with their armies and / or diplomats for great distances overseas. The Mongols conquered their way through Asia and getting to Europe and pretty far into the Middle East. These are great distances still, no instant communication like today. And throughout all this expansion they'd post someone like a governor to be in charge and make sure things run smoothly.

People always find ways to get what they want, anyways, the journey to India at the age of sail was always 9 months and that's how it was for centuries. I had read this in a book of the east India company some years ago. But a great deal depended on time of the year, because of the monsoon season. The winds you found beyond past the cape of good hope determined whether traffic would be incoming or outgoing. For places beyond India it could take up to a year, but it was never more than that. But mind you over time exceptional maritime innovation helped to reduce that time a great deal even by the use of sail. Usually European political institutions for centuries had developed various methods to deal with this such as predicting future political situations beforehand and sending orders earlier based on prediction but most important giving commanders or political figures based in the East a great deal of autonomy to act on their own judgement and experience to the situations they face in their close vicinity before receiving any orders from home. That meant that Europeans always considered the fact that a European war might have sparked before news had reached them so they were on much higher levels of alert compared to other places, like America for example, where the journey was way shorter.

The Portuguese also arrived and setting up trading settlements in Ayutthaya (modern-day Thailand). To this day there is a community of Portuguese-Thai descendents in the Thonburi area of Bangkok, Portuguese recipes have become traditional Thai snack foods, and Portuguese loanwords are part of The Thai Language. The Portuguese were also responsible for bringing chili peppers to the region. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in a city that was already multi-national, with Chinese, Japanese, and Persian traders. The Persian word for westerner, which was a word derived from "Franc", was passed into Thai to describe the groups of Europeans who arrived following The Portuguese, and is still in use today. In the 1600s The French were involved in a palace intrigue during The Reign of King Narai and were expelled from Siam. Some border areas between Thailand and Cambodia are still a topic of contention and about 10 years ago it came close to there being a battle over one area which contains a very important Khmer Kingdom site. The International Court ruled in favour of Cambodia, much to the dismay of many in Thailand. On the western side, many people of The Shan State still feel very independent, and especially near the border of Thailand will tend to speak Thai more than Burmese. I knew someone from The Shan State who couldn't speak Burmese. I think there are still some in Thailand who feel The Shan State should be part of Thailand, as the people who live there are Tai Yai, and speak a language that is actually an older version of Thai and Lao. I asked another friend of mine from Shan if he thought Shan should be part of Thailand. He said he didn't think that, but he also didn't feel The Shan State was Burmese. Of course, now The Shan are one of the groups fighting against the military junta that seized control in February.

I am an Indonesian. First of all thank you for covering the part of Colonization of Asia including parts of my country as well. It is really a great video. As for Dutch enterence to East Indies, I want to add that before the VOC established their center of colonial trade in Batavia the city name was not Jakarta, but Jayakarta. The name of Jayakarta was given by Fatahillah, the commander of Demak Sultanate army which led an invasion to Pajajaran Kingdom teritory. Under Pajajaran the city name was Sunda Kelapa and already become the trade port of the kingdom. Demak decided to attack and captured the city for their conquest of hegemony in Java as well as preventing Portuguese to establish presence in Java as they already made contact with Pajajaran Kingdom. The city of Sunda Kelapa renamed as Jayakarta by Fatahilah and after VOC conquered the city and decide to make it their new base, the city than renamed by the Dutch as Batavia. Actually, Jakarta was name first given during Japanese Occupation period in my country (1942-1945) as an attempt to destroy any remaining Western Colonialism presence as way to gain support from Indonesian for their war efforts in Pacific War. That's all I need to add, overall this is a good video. Can't wait for youe next video in this series. Keep it up. 😊

The answer is pretty simple: Asian disunity (on a molecular level) and the fact that it was resting on its laurels. Even a small island nation like Ceylon had, at least, 16 different Ethnic Groups, 3 Religions and 4 Kingdoms hating each others guts. When the Portuguese landed, they just had to play them off one another. There was one King, Tikiri Bandara, who managed to temporarily unite the different groups and the result was a decisive native victory. The natives routed an army of 4,000 Portuguese Arquebusiers and 20,000+ Lascarins (local militia) at the Battle of Mulleriyawa. This was the largest defeat a Colonial Empire had yet suffered in Asia. What happened then? King Tikiri Bandara turned on his own different subjects. Infighting broke out and the King's successor literally *handed* the Western portion of the Island to the Portuguese Crown. This was pretty much what happened throughout South, South-East and East Asia.

Nice video once again, as expected of Kings and Generals! There are some small mistakes though, as the Tay Son dynasty was out of power in Vietnam by the 1800s and the French colonizations (replaced by the Nguyen dynasty), and the German acquisition of the Marshall Islands /Nauru might as well be mentioned separately since it was acquired in a different time and way than the colonies brought from Spain. Otherwise it's a very stunning video with amazing details and graphic, nice job once again!!

exactly the other way round. That's the reason the dutch parliament didn.t back the WIC after portuguese rebels took over the dutch colonies in Brazil (taken from portugal during 80 years war. The areas west of Xinjiang, China were actually seeded to Russia after the treaty of Saint Petersburg in 1881, this is significant because Russia actually tried to take control of alot more territory in the Ili Valley, but were forced to retreat when a large Chinese army arrived. This was one of the few times an Asian power was able to reverse European expansion.
@alvinlin8140
@alvinlin8140 2 года назад
Asian/Siberian Russia was lightly populated and so they had a hard time projecting power, especially against a highly populated Asian power like China even if it was falling apart at the time. Another factor was that Russia was by far the most backward of the European great powers. Plus, most of Russia’s conquest of Asia happened very rapidly and I don’t think it would be in there interest to conquer and add more non ethnic Russians into their empire just yet. Better to displace the minorities you already have first to secure a dominant demographic first before getting more land, especially if your empire is continuous on land.
@williamkarbala5718

It’s pretty interested and shows just how powerful these nations were to send people across the world back when there wasn’t planes or trains and it took months for them to get anyway, all to set up trading posts and ports that eventually turned into cities and needed soldiers and then governors and essentially became city-states of their own, while still being under the authority of a sovereign on the other side of the planet. So wild when you remember how small the Netherlands and Portugal are when compared to the other powers. Pretty remarkable stuff when you think about it 🤔

The Netherlands was small, but the VOC is the biggest company in history. The first transnational corporation. It were not just dutch employees, but also other europeans, asians and maybe even others. So the company controlled most of the trade in Asia for a long time, but it was not really the Netherlands until the company was bankrupt and the Dutch government took it over.

Not really. They had the best ships at the time and gunpowder. They only occupied largely unsettled areas and built them up. It was a very successful tactic and eventually trade made those centers into large cities. The natives in those areas still had primitive weapons so were defenseless.

@@enixbluerain7213 You sound like the sort of idiot who says "but they built railroads!" when people mention the outsized role that slavery, repression, exploitation, and genocide played in the history of colonialism. I also used to say stupid things about how colonialism was morally complicated and a mixed bag of good and evil until I bothered to take historical research seriously and saw that my old views were untenable. The fact is that these so-called "wokes" actually bother to take the history of colonialism into account. The same cannot be said for most people on the right, who prefer to either ignore the history of colonialism completely or twist it to serve their own white supremacist ends. eh only true in a very limited sense, Cuba was granted independence in 1902, only 4 years after the spanish-american war. The Philippines were not granted independence for far longer but the US had already planned to give it full independence before the outbreak of WWII, and it was granted that indepence in 1946. The philippines is the closest the Us ever got to having a true colony and even that was pretty half hearted and given up far easier compare to Eurpoean countries or the Japanese.
