I think Mary 1 was the saddest. She was desperate to have a child, and died of a disease that mimicked pregnancy.
@MarilynRB
@MarilynRB Год назад
Completely agree. She struggled so much in her life, going from a princess to a bastard, being cruelly treated by her father, Anne Boleyn and Anne's ladies. Anne instructed Mary's ladies to hit her, curse at her, and remind her that she was "a cursed bastard and no princess". She married so late in life, to a man who was younger, healthier and more vivacious, who wasn't thrilled at the marriage. He abandoned her, leaving her to die alone. Out of all of the Tudors, I pity Mary the most.

@@samijones5590 Couldn't agree with you more. She wasn't any worse than many, many others. I often think that, should he have lived, Edward VI would have been even more murderous than any other Tudor. He was an absolute fanatic for the Protestant religion and reforms, and given the a matter of fact writings in his journals at the executions of his paternal uncles, had a kind of coldness about him. This is all my opinion, of course. His father was like that too, though; once someone was no longer of use to him, he got rid of them, and it seems he didn't mourn them, no matter how dedicated and loyal they were. Think of Thomas Wolsey, Thomas Cromwell and the saddest of them all (IMO) , Sir Thomas Moore. He got rid of Catherine of Aragon for Anne Boelyn and once she proved "useless", had her and innocent others executed for his own self righteous needs. I think Henry VIII was more bloodthirsty than Mary I ever was!

Thank you so much. I thought I knew a few of these but the whole list was fascinating. I think the saddest death was the execution of Lady Jane Grey as, from birth, she was nothing but a pawn in her father's and then father-in-laws machination's. She was ALWAYS powerless and therefore executing her at 17 years of age was abominable.
@reverseflashes
@reverseflashes Год назад
Agreed. It is scary to see what man's obsession with power makes one do. Henry Grey and John Dudley saw Edward Seymour's fall as it happened in front of their eyes and yet, instead of learning lessons, they went ahead and made the same mistakes. Authority blinded them completely. And to think that Mary was villainized over Jane's death... ugh! She never wanted to kill Jane but she was cornered. I know it's been centuries but I wish things ended differently for her. Even if she was meant to die at 17, I wish she died in peace.

The Tudor dynasty would have lasted longer if any of Henry's legitimate children had heirs, but none of them did. Edward VI died before he got the chance, Mary was too old and sick for children by the time marriage came, and the chance never came for Elizabeth for one reason or other. And if Henry VII had remarried, he might have produced some sons who could have carried on the line. And of course, if Henry's son Henry Jnr by Catherine of Aragon had survived, history would have been totally different.
@Acidfrog475
@Acidfrog475 Год назад
Depends on when those theoretical sons would’ve died. If all of them died then the outcome would likely have been exactly the same (or at least very similar).
@floraflowers

Sometimes I do wonder how history would have looked and what the monarchy would be like today, had Henry VIII had a grandson/granddaughter that would have taken the throne. Or what history would have looked like, had Henry gotten the son that he was so much longing for, implicitly meaning that Elizabeth would have never taken the throne.
@stefanielonn4164
@stefanielonn4164 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for uploading this video! Some of the saddest deaths include Mary I, who wanted a child so badly, but actually had ovarian cancer, which mimicked pregnancy. Elizabeth of York as well, as she understood that she and Henry VII needed sons. After her death, Henry VII was so devastated that he didn’t want to remarry. As for Edward VI, I feel that he now rests in peace knowing Protestantism is now a thing, mostly because of his half-sister Elizabeth I. If anything, I’m sure Edward VI wanted to only exclude Mary, but couldn’t do so without excluding Elizabeth as well.
@jameshalley9763

I am a descendant of Aurthur Plantagenet who was Elizabeth of York's half brother, and also one of her other half brothers, Thomas?? Grey. I don't have any proven Tudor blood, but am a descendant of Mary Boleyn thru her son Henry Carey. I also have an unproven descent thru a daughter of Maurice the brother of Prince Rupert, who was one of the Pirate Princes of the Caribbean who went down with his ship in a hurricane. His mother was King James daughter Ann. This shows on my family tree, but where is the proof. These tudor stories are very interesting, and I see a lot of the Tudor Court people as ancestors, and a lot of them were executed by my dear cousin Henry VIII many times removed.

@The Shy Historian, I absolutely enjoyed this video so much, I have watched it numerous times. Humor me with a number of comments I'd love to discuss with you! @14:55 I completely agree with you; not only is Anne of Cleves my favorite of Henry's wives, I also think she was the most successful, if that makes sense. She was smart enough to do what would keep her alive, that being give the man monster what he wanted, which was her out of the way. She could either have land (which produced income), annual pensions, servants and keep her life OR risk losing her life, and have to sleep aside a morbidly obese, smelly, oozing of piss and thankfully at least, a likely impotent man. I often laugh about Henry's comments about how gross he found her body and smells, when let's face it; the likely only one who was fat and smelly was him. I also find it medically curious that despite having six wives, Henry produced only 3 children who lived past the age of 15. Now, we know George Boleyn notoriously read outloud a letter at his trial which indicated his sister Anne commented Henry was impotent. Guess Jane Seymour did the magic trick. @11:36 Hmm... Not a fan of Dr. Starkey? I understand he is controversial, but he did an absolutely smashingly good lecture about Catherine Howard not long ago, which I loved so much I have watched it countless times. While I adore Dr. Starkey, I do understand why others do not, but I will agree with one thing he said, which is historians get better with age, as I think that is true about humans in general. Generally speaking, it is life experiences which teach us lessons, gaining wisdom along the way. Lastly, @15:30 I have always had the utmost pity for Mary 1. I'm not going to list out all the details of why, as it is quite laborious, but here we go. She did not marry until very late in life, and then to a man (and her cousin, ha!) who was younger and found her unattractive, and thus likely didn't enjoy doing his "duty" by her. He often abandoned her, leaving her depressed, lonely and sad, knowing full well that his lack of intercourse with her only lessened her already meager changes of conception. Even after her death, he is to have said he felt "reasonable regret" on her passing. We know he went on to try to woo her sister Elizabeth, and rather quickly, too. As always, I enjoy all of your videos and truly look forward to more, partially about the lesser known and discussed Tudors, such as Henry VII and Mary I. Id also adore videos on Queen Victoria, Mary, Queen of Scots and Lady Margaret Beaufort. While we are at it, let's discuss the mess of Harry and tell "Lady" Victoria Harvey to take a seat and stop defending Prince Andrew. Thank God I have Piers Morgan. Haha...cheers!

@@brontewcat Honestly I know many things in history at that time was just fantasy world written by the royals but I know many truthful factually proven things about that era so I know they may not have too much accuracy but Six the Musical isnt very accurate when The Tudors is.
@brontewcat
@brontewcat Год назад
@@43john68 I understand The Tudors has more accuracy than Six, and I think it may have become more accurate in the later seasons. However it is not very accurate from what I have seen of it. The first few episodes are wildly inaccurate. After that The Tudors seem to stick to the storyline as to what happened with each wife better, but I would not describe it as very accurate. If you want to make recommendations about learning about historical eras and people it is much better to refer to non fiction accounts. David Starkey’s documentaries on the wives is a good start. His books are better. Best is to read multiple accounts so you get a better picture of the different theories about who these people were and why they did the things they did.
@brontewcat
@brontewcat Год назад
@@43john68 Even better is to read the primary accounts, but even then you have to be very careful who you are reading. Eustace Chapuys is a principle source of information about Anne Boleyn, but he hated her. So relying on him is the equivalent of relying what Piers Morgan says about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

@@elizabethmunting3808 Great. You are now officially the most distant cousin I know of. My descent continues through the Stuarts so we are likely more closely related than 14th cousins. When we moved in here, I found I had a 7th cousin living across the street. I have since found three more in the county including one of the county commissioners.

If Henry 7th had just remarried and had more sons they future events would not have happened - so really Henry 7th destroyed his line by not giving Henry 8th any younger brothers to ease some of his marital duties

I mentioned this in response to a different comment, but it highly depends on whether the sons themselves would’ve survived infancy or childhood.

Anne Boleyn And Jane Where Both Called ‘Henry’s True loves’ What about The Others Weren’t They Henry’s True Love As Well It Sounds Like he was a hopeless romantic however Henry knew how strong and fearless and smart Anne Was but The Other Wife’s Where As Well he didn’t treat them fairly he just wanted a son and pretend he didn’t like Elizabeth But he secretly did because she resembled her Mother So Well each child was like there mother in there Own Way

I believe Anne of Cleves passed away from breast cancer. They may have had different surnames but Fitzroy and Jane Grey had Tudor blood. So execution and the sweating sickness I'd list....

Well, this is different to how I've understood history. I didn't think there was any doubt that Henry viii died from sepsis. Also Jane Seymour. Arthur had sweating sickness as I understand. Edward vi wasn't generally unhealthy until he caught measles and smallpox. This weakened him enough to die from TB.
