Hey there today we will look at how expensive Hearthstone really is and talk about if Hearthstone is Pay to win. Using all 6300 of my IQ points to come up with the best possible fix to make Hearthstone cheaper is obviously included
Btw do you like the thumbnail? I think its great, clickable and simple enough to understand but I guess we will see how many of dem views or going to fly in

While we were playing this Wild Hearthstone Deck and had a win rate that could have been better, we figured out that Hearthstone Decks in 2020 might be what you expect, broken Decks that can get you to legend easily. Being a Hearthstone Legendary rank makes your best deck even more interesting and fun because after Scholomance Academy a lot of random effects on minions and spells came to the game of Hearthstone
(this nonsense is for SEO btw)

Hearthstone is pay to win if you want to do any good. Ofc you can hit legend without it as f2p as i have while not spending a single $. However, when you run 10 times in a row into Raza priest at high ranks and lose 90% of games cause you dont draw cards you need to counter then as a control deck or when they clear all n curve vs agro... you start question that.

Riot's Runeterra is much more... 'clever" in it's monetisation. Main monetisation focus is cosmetics (not cards), and those cosmetics are awesome. Like custom skin for your side of board, with exclusive soudtrack and animations (with new KDA board you can even change the track) A pet with different animations Tons of emotions Battle pass (for more cosmetics) Cardbacks ofc. I'm pretty sure there will be different card animations soon. As a result i feel no restrictions in deck experementations, and i can just buy the Bilgewater board because i "want" it, not cause i "need"it. I fill up my collecton to max long before new cards go out without excessive grinding, often not caring about quests at all.

The game itself if fairly generous with giving you cards (Especially the ability to get 1 Champ Wild a week), but I think the biggest benefit is being able to purchase wildcards straight-up (Something which MTG Arena needs to be able to do). With the current pricing model, the most it could cost you to purchase a deck would be ~$60USD (6x$3 + 34x$1.20). But of course, that's assuming every non-champion card is Epic (Which chances are, will not be the case).

On second thought, ‘pay to win’ might not be the appropriate term. But we can all agree that the economy is definitely not friendly for f2p players. What about we make are able to unlock every card from the current expansion directly by just playing the game. No packs, no dust, no RNG with card gaining. Maybe you unlock tokens of each rarity as you play so you can choose which card you want to unlock of that rarity. Like the new progression path they are adding, but with just tokens and maybe some cosmetics. Then Blizzard can monetize all the other cosmetic stuff and let the players actually use all the cards they made without RNG deciding their fate.

Hearthstone used to be my favorite card game of all time, I even went so far as to spend 200$ on it, a choice that I do not regret since I believe good games should be rewarded in some way, especially if they are free to play. The thing is, I am an expairimenter. I like learning through making mistakes and adjusting my strategy. The problem with Hearthstone is that making mistakes is extremely painful as far as deck building goes. If I burn a bajillion dust to build a crazy idea for a deck I had and it turns out to suck I can't just go back and use those resources to make another deck: disenchanting only returns an abysmal 25% of the dust you put into a deck. While the game does give good avenues for getting cards either through spending money or time it just isn't worth it. I don't want to either grind for two monthes to get enough dust for a deck, or else shell out 100$ dollars to get enough dust to make my deck. Pay to win doesn't mean just literally pay $70 for +5% damage. Two new players might jump in and look at the same hunter deck recipe. One player uses suboptimal substitutes and the other payed money so they craft better cards and win matches that the other player wouldn't. Even with the example of the top tier budget deck, you have less room to experiment with what works and what decks are easier for you. Sure a top player can rocket to legend with any tier 1/2 deck but a typical player might have a 49% winrate with one of those decks and 51% with the one they can't afford. They lose 2 in 100 games because they didn't pay to win.

It's mind boggling how people think "Well, you can reach a very high rank without paying, so it's not p2w", by that logic, almost not a single game is p2w. Imagine csgo but every weapon costs $100000 just to have available, well, technically speaking, you can win with knife only, you just have to git gud, so it's not p2w. If two players are equally skilled and spend an equal time in game, but one is a whale and the other is f2p, the whale will win against the f2p more often than not. This is BY DEFINITION p2w.

Its pay to have fun and i always said exactly this. This is why the disaster that was Artifact shouldnt have failed and it angers me. The game itself was absolut crap, but the bussiness model was 100% fun, despite what idiots would say. In magic, yugioh, pokemon, what do you do to play? you buy a fukkin starter-deck. these take you back 20 bucks. Why exactly are digital card-games something that should be free to play and never follow the rules of a physical card game? Because guess what happend in atrifact: fun-decks indeed, cost nothing. And thats why the dust-system of hearthstone is simply shit. If i want to play an overload-only shaman which will probably never really win games in a meaningful matter, why should i pay EXACTLY the same as a meta-deck? In magic, if i wanted to play a curse-deck, i pay like 20 bucks. Not a thousand like the meta-deck. And before someone calls me out on competitive play and the "fairness" that everyone simply pays the same for them - yeah i guess you are right. So? I wouldnt mind having meta-decks cost a fortune, because in the end: every single fukker imaginable plays something he netdecks. Nothing else. He never had put in a single thought about his deckbuilding. Such players are not what fosters a healthy, toxic-free competitive environment. For me, these guys do have mental issues and try to compensate for something. So, let the meta-decks cost a million, so any other player not interested in useless ranked play could run wild with rogue-decks and simply having fun. Its a much better system rather than fostering ranked-zombies netdecking the monthly aggro-deck. Nobody would lose anything in these types of players.

Honestly I'm annoyed that "pay to win" has become such a common term because it's such an easy bar to clear, all you need is a single character/deck available for free that you can theoretically win with, bam, now it's not "pay to win" technically. I liked the emphasis on "pay to have fun" because I think that cuts to the heart of why people complain about "pay to win" games: paying money is what gives you access to flexible, powerful options that are interesting, where playing for free is like a demo version where you play with weaker tools. One other term I've seen is "uneven playfield", like where you can pay money to buy a better deck/character/etc. than free players.

I’ve recently been wanting to try out mechathun warlock, so I started opening boomsday packs to get it and soularium, and in the meantime had crafted hemet (still need dorean). However while opening boomsday packs, I opened myra’s element, which is good in mechathun rogue, but I crafted hemet for warlock. So it’s kinda frustrating being a free to play player and getting stuck in a situation where I crafted a legendary for one deck, then end up getting a key piece for a similar deck for a different class. If I choose to go rogue now, hemet is a waste of a craft, if I choose warlock, Myra was a waste of a legendary open. I think this about sums up how it feels to want to play fun decks but get shafted by card costs because holy hell legendaries are expensive

Here's my question - Why should card packs even be a thing? Tradition? Just because this is how it's always been is not a valid reason as to why it should continue to be this way. Appeal to tradition is a logical fallacy for a reason. People have been doing stupid shit for centuries and refused to change because it's how things have always been. Packs are inherently anti-consumer. Locking meaningful gameplay behind lootboxes is HORRIBLE and no other type of game would ever be accepted if they did this. Imagine a shooter where all guns except the most basic single shot pistol are locked behind real money lootboxes, nobody would EVER be okay with that. Imagine a Hearthstone where you could directly pay for any card you want and NEVER again have to open a pack. Or a Hearthstone where you can just blanket buy ALL cards for 60$ for the entire expansion. We know exactly why Blizz wants to keeps things as is, and it's because they can extract WAY more than 60$ from its players. But SHOULD they be able to do that? Should ANY game cost more than 60$ to play? (or 70$ I guess, some games raised the price with the new generation)

HS is not Pay to Win. It's Pay to Have Fun. It's possible to win with cheap decks (Especially things like Face Hunter and Zoolock which have always been pretty solid and consist of just Rares/Commons) But having fun with a variety of decks, especially ones centred around legendaries with cool effects requires a significant investment (Either cash money, or time) The most effective way to alleviate this, would be to take a page out of MTG:A's book and where you have those "Suggested Decks" when you go to make a new deck... Just give players the cards to make them (In a non-disenchantable/craftable variant). That way, people can play a number of decks out of the gate and can put their dust towards optimizing the deck(s) they like, or playing around with meme cards for fun.

I wish there were non-collectible card games where you just unlocked cosmetics. Different heroes, voicelines, card backs, 'goldens', coins, hell add a whole new system with stickers and sprays and sell me those in lootcrates instead! Not having access to the same tools, being unable to go "Hey my opponent did a fun thing, I want to try fun thing!" or effectively theorycraft with "Okay but what if I.. put this, this and THIS card together?" is just so very un-fun. I'm not here to collect cards, I'm here to PLAY cards. That said, your proposed free-rotation decks sounds fun, even if you couldn't modify them with your collection it'd be "Hey there's token druid this week, I'll play that!"

While I agree with you on the spirit of the video, you have some points in that video really wrong: 1. Comparing cards to different games is super wrong. Sometimes I buy different games. Like I played RDR2 for few hundred hours. But I opened my golden Piloted Shredder and in no way I can count how many hours I enjoyed playing with him. Even triple A projects like Cyberpunk are not designed to last that long as Hearthstone plans to. 2. All your ideas about making Hearthstone cheaper in different ways are quite interesting, but they have one thing in common - company will earn less money. So they are not realistic. They are moving price of Hearthstone down really slowly (like duplicates protection), but in no way they gonna chop themselves a hand.

as an example the system of MTGA is way cheaper. You can spend 50$ on expansion + BP to have 90% of the pool after a month and a half. 80% of "epic" and "legendary" cards are good. A bad epic/legendary is a miss, never an intent. Getting almost every card by the next expansion. still the game is too expansive and the gameplay is shit (mostly bc some "epics" and "legendaries" are too good), although far better than the random f-fest that is HS.

Also, it means that I mustn't fail almost any quest to mantain that. I think HS isn't very friendly to p2w, but it's possible to play, wild format it's better for that matter. About the ideas suggested in the video, the first is terrible (look at paper tcg's market, that's awful), but the second one I liked. Here in lies one of the biggest fallacies of digital card games. Let's say I'm a Magic player. I go and buy six boxes of the latest expansion. I bust open 216 packs with 15 cards per pack. All this cost was roughly 600 dollars. I know that the people I play with trade and sell the cards to make certain decks. I can also sell and trade for older cards in Legacy formats that are worth way more money. This constant trading and selling you will start to actually get your money back in profit. Also for winning your local Friday night Magic you net more packs, earning more cards, and making more money in the process. The better you get at deck building with lower powered, hence less expensive cards, let's you gain back your money invested in no time at all. Before I stopped playing Magic I was and still am a high ranked player. I have won regional tournaments and played the best players in my state. I would usually invest my time into making mono colored decks with highly tested side boards for beating all the top meta decks. This made my deck building easier, little to no investment in multi-colored cards and lands that produce multiple colors. This also allowed me to trade and sell more of my cards as I had little to no use for most of the cards I procured, either through my winning or just from buying those initial boxes of a new expansion/set. I have long since quit playing Magic, sold all of my cards and have invested in gold, stocks, and real estate. My point is, at least with all the time and money I invested into playing a physical card game I was able to cash out, while never losing any money in the long run. With Hearthstone none of what I said is possible. All the time and money invested leads to no payout at all. Unless you are a Champion player that actually gets invited to a tournament. Even so, you aren't able to cash out. You have to rely solely on your winnings. And winning consistently in a very random game is nearly impossible. I don't care how great of a deck builder you are, in Hearthstone RNG is god.
