Discover how the initial design of Ugly Sonic led to massive backlash, resulting in a fan-driven redesign that transformed the character and saved the movie.
Well tbh has any film had that much backlash before it was released, I mean, come on the main character of the film looked like a child in a blue monkey suit
@@Fanndch what do you mean back to back flops or have you forgotten that inside out 2 and Deadpool and wolverine made a billion and possibly Moana 2 would also make a billion because a studio has 4 flops in one year doesn't mean that they won't have any Hits again
@@EzihChikamsoinside out 2 was received so well because it wasn’t like all of the trash that preceded it 😂. Same goes for Deadpool and Wolverine, altho that honestly did so good because of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, not because of Disney. I doubt Moana 2 will get a billion, like wasn’t it originally going to be a Disney plus series but is now being reworked into a movie?? Disney is going to have to work harder if they want audiences goodwill back tbh, like I just want good original movies instead of pointless sequels
Maybe in a world where the orginal Super Mario movie or more recently the Minecraft movie didnt exist. Movie makers can make horrible decisions when it comes to video game adaptations
people have no idea how hard it is to replace the entire design when you've already animated, simulated, rendered, and composited everything huge respect to the team for re-doing everything
@miscellaneousposts pretty sure the studio that was responsible for sonic in the first movie went bankrupt after the release. Not sure if it was because of this situation or due tk prior issues
Damn, I really like the fact that the filmmakers listened to the community without getting angry and even started joking about it. They really have no enemies
If you ever think we live in the worst timeline, just remember there's a timeline out there where they didn't change the Sonic design and we never got any Sonic movies past the first one
I personally didn't mind the design when the trailer released. I thought everyone was just overreacting. But yeah they made a good decision to change sonic's design
Imagine what it would have been like if they never listened to their audience. I mean how would you come back with a second movie with that character design, and at that point it would pretty much be too late to revert to a design similar to what we actually got in the end
Got a feeling that it's just marketing to make people have eyes on it then they change it, if that's true it's probably one of the best marketing stun by far
Sonic was a huge part of my childhood so when I saw his original look in the trailer for the first movie I was borderline traumatized. It also goes to show that sometimes fans know what they're talking about.
That’s because they were desperate and wanted to compete against Disney, Marvel etc. When you force in desperate situations, then you see human ingenuity.
@@ghost_5519The model and a couple animation tweaks were the only changes. It still uses the same rigging and most of the same animation from the original.
It wasn't a stunt. There's a bunch of concept art, pics of the making process behind the model stand in, and merch that was in the making, and they released these two years ago. It was 100% real. Also there's a clip of ben schwartz with motion capture dots on his face because the original idea was to animate sonic's expressions based on the ones ben made.
For those who dont know. VFX Studios was the ones responsible for the Sonic's first design in the 2020 movie. But when they made the redesign, the studio was forced to shut down after the redesign of the movie is complete. VFX Studios might have screwed up, but they managed to put the redemption arc before Paramount pulled the plug on them.
Tbh the first design probably some C level fucked up that once they got backlashed, they C level got sacked, the studio closed but the people who actually do the redesigned got relocate to other studio. Nothing of value is lost tbh.
@@LxuiicasLabels group of people are Minecraft players but Due to the technical glitch they need are trapped inside game , they had to survive and get out of that world ( basically Jumanji )
the most critique tho is just from fans that are not open to a change at all. and a creator should love their work regardless what people demand and stick with it
Sonic Movie had to redesign just Sonic, Minecraft Movie would have to redesign every mob, the whole cgi in 7 months. not possible with the time and financial budget since it's all spent buying Jack Black and Jason Momoa
@@BlueHighlander-ew8qd doubt it. I agree that they always had the good design. However, there’s always assh*le producers and directors that ‘go against the grain’ to be different or some bullcrap instead of going with the Design teams’ original (and more relatable) ideas
To think, it’s simply because the guys upstairs listened to their audience that this movie blew up like it did, and now we’re getting a whole cinematic universe going for it.
This is why critiques matter, im tired of people these days thinking criticism is always hate when it can save something. It’s just like how sparking zero didn’t even have split screen
I understand what they were trying to go for they wanted to make Sonic realistic as possible but the thing they forgot is that there is things that fans love about his design and what makes him unique His eyes, His shoes, His body shape, His gloves They forgot all that when making his first design
the thing with "realistic" sonic is that you start to have more questions; does he have lips, or does the hair go into his mouth? his fingers are entirely covered in fur, so he has no pads on his fingers, he has only flat teeth. the current looks just makes you not think about that.
No it's 100% real. They hired tyson hesse to help with the redesign, and a bunch of concept art and behind the scenes photos featuring the original design were uncovered a few years ago.
It ain't a PR stunt. VFX Studios was forced to shut down after the making of Sonic (2020) so they managed to redeem a redemption arc from the redesign.
The OG TRALIER is a MASTERPIECE. Best Warner Bros Production EVER! I'm playin but it looks like a work of art compared to A Minecraft Trailer that we waited almost a decade for.
For damn real. Disney should gather like a small 15 people audience representing the whole world to give them feedback so that its not spoiled for the whole world.
They should also review their staff 'cause they don't know what they're doing😅 Like the director of the lion king remake, he said that animals don't express emotion or something like that😅 Why did they hire someone who doesn't even look at animals😅
whats ironic is the redesign probably netted them a shit ton of money in profit but most studios wont listen to feedback like this because theyre too short-sighted to understand that and would just see the extra cost it would take to re-animate everything
I am not a Sonic fan, but I am glad this movie had a success. They listened to their fanbase and respected the original content by reverting the design choice they were going with this movie, and this deserve respect.
I respect the heck out of the team for going back to the drawing board and reanimating a movie already completed. It might have cost them time and money at the time but they gained fans trust and respect and it paid dividends into the franchise it is now.
puts on tin foil hat Now what if they intentionally made that horrible trailer because they weren't ready at all to release it so they wanted to spark a bad publicity that would make the good trailer. Absolutely pop out insanely hard. Which is a tactic. Some people in some industries actually do to some degree Puts off tin foil hat man, I love the redesign. I Kind of blacked out for a moment
That's already been debunked. Usually, merchandise is created before a film/television show's completion. This is to have the merchandise ready upon the project's release. Look up the Sonic The Hedgehog movie's merchandise from the 1st film. Suprise, suprise, they all have the Ugly Sonic's design. As too does the other merchandise, movie posters, etc. I don't know about you, but I don't think that Paramount is in favor of wasting money on publicity stunts. Animating a character from the ground up and reshoots are often hella expensive. I always thought companies like Paramount are in favor of "making money," not "wasting" it. 🤷🏾♂️
They had like 2 months to reanimate the whole movie with a completely new model, I can guarantee it was marketing that the ugly one was released, think how much people got angry then suddenly they listened to fans and made it better, then boom even more people want to see it
They are gonna have to use this strategy if they want to save the Minecraft movie cause those creatures in that teaser come straight out of the uncanny valley.
The Minecraft movie problem is on a very different level, they don't need to just redesign the characters, but the whole movie, including the generic "group of people who end up in a fictional world and go through a bonding journey to get back to their world and love each other" plot. It needs to be completely redone, down to every little detail. Let's forget allat and laugh at "I Am Steve" while it still isn't part of a boring family cringe movie.
i still consider this one of the biggest accomplishments in our community... and because Paramount actually listened i went and watched each movie multiple times... and own each of them in digital form as well, just to show my appreciation for them actually listening to fan feedback.
Bro, if they hadn't listened to the fans, we wouldn't have gotten a kick ass trilogy plus a knuckles series. This was a win-win for both the fans and the studio.
i still think about the theory that the studio creates the first design to gain attention, then finally shows the better (actual) design later, and people will automatically like it
You have way too much faith in people’s ability to pull things off. More often than not the simple truth is being make silly mistakes due to ignorance or oversight.
Let’s be clear, we weren’t angry, we were confused, scared and genuinely concerned. Glad he made a comeback in Chip in Dale though! Ugly Sonic has a place in the world. Its in reality cop shows like Ugly Sonic: Uglier Crimes
