Also, loose steering on that truck could be the steering shaft from the steering wheel down to the steering gear. There’s nylon that separates her whatever is in between the two shafts they go down to the steering gear on that shaft that connects to his steering wheel and the shaft that goes down to the steering gear Gets worn out and you get in there also I had to replace the one on my pick up as well. It was worn out completely had a lot of slop in it now it was after replace the steering gear. I still had a lot of slop they replace that and took care of a lot of it That was on my 1997 C3500 that I had put a P400 6.5l diesel engine in
The missing/broke tailgate bezel definitely hit home for me lol. Broke my first one and picked up a new one from the dump. Broke the second one and now it's held on by my reverse camera drilled straight thru the tailgate metal haha.
That bumper is only a problem in that it blocks the ventilation holes that the stock bumper had. Those years had a too-small rad so not recommended for heavy hauling in places like here in appalachia. the holes had a flap that directed airflow up into the rad. Consider that plus i also hollowed my bowtie for a "flowtie". I did all the recommended cooling upgrades for mine and now the fan barely ever goes full tilt regardless of conditions. Noticable change is an understatement. I ran my 2005 LLY for years with a leaky head gasket. It would only leak under heavy load and then the low coolant light would come on but it would never empty the rad. Then one day it started bubbling through the expansion tank constantly. I decided to get it done by a shop instead of self and not regretting it after a couple years of a much better engine in all ways once it's fixed. Only had 145k so did nothing on the bottom end... it didn't need it. The shop only did head studs in hopes of not having return customers barter with them. Understandable.
I liked the little musical interlude riding horse and all cool lighting, smack in the middle of mechanical diagnostic and repair, plus a few farm cats and dogs. Tying together the people who still live this way. Well done Deboss. Really enjoy your vids and you’ve gave me enough of a look and explanation on some modern engines especially diesels to where I can tear into them with a sense of what I’m doing. Thanks guys
@@MADAmechanical You Chevy guys can't even talk right. It's a SAS (Solid Axle Swap) NOT SFA swap. Always overcomplicating things to make you seem smart.
A feature length video of a DG road trip will save my sanity this Christmas morning. 46:48 this music choice always soothes my sole. I’m only really here for the music.
I look forward to seeing a build of that engine. I had avoided them in the past due to their reputation in my area but, as you stated, the CP3 issues were most likely misdiagnosed. Thanks for the video, it was extremely entertaining and your blown head gasket "fix" was a hoot! I love it when people think outside the box.
Every generation of dmax has their issues, especially the OBS trucks, but you gotta remember, you’re working on a GM! The care that goes into engineering a GM vehicle is above and beyond anything else I’ve ever worked on except some older German made stuff that is was equally as serviceable. Just know the sticking points going in so you can negotiate accordingly on price and I’m sure you will be happy for making the switch. They ride like a caddie with the IFS setup, which also makes it expensive if you want to lift the truck more than a couple inches, but even with a lift from a company like cognitio, the ride is better than a stock ford or Cummins of the same era. My lb7 needed injectors about 6 months into me owing it and I was cursing my decision to get the truck after reading all the horror stories online about how horrible of a job it is and this and that. Turns out it’s my favorite truck to work on. You won’t regret getting one!
The GMT800’s are some of my favorite trucks ever. I currently have four of them that are in varying conditions and are used for various things. I really like to see that people are starting to fix some of them up because once they are gone, they are gone. Three of mine are beyond repair (2 due to rust, one due to a collision) but one is in really good shape and it stays parked during the winter. I’m also always upgrading and fixing things on it. Thanks for the video!
That was quite an ingenious coolant recovery system. I heard of a guy using the washer bottle for booze but not for coolant. Merry Christmas Happy New Year Great video guys!
Still wild how crazy all the coincidences with this truck was, hope y'all have fun with her! Y'all're definitely having more fun that I was going to with it! Was awesome getting to meet y'all! Thanks again for stopping by the shop!
I made it 1900 miles with a blown head gasket just like this...and the solution for me was gutting the thermostats, a 5 gallon backpack garden sprayer and a back seat full of water jugs. I kept the temp super low, seemed to help, and then every 15 miles you give it a ten second squirt of water.
It’s kind of wild to me that the Kwik Fill you guys stopped at about 2.5 hours from the boarder is like 45 minutes from my house. No idea why it’s crazy to thinking someone as big as the DeBoss crew is strolling through my neck of the woods, but it is to me. Loved the video! Can’t wait to see what the future brings with it!
oh, yeah, same. Junkyard Digs did a video with a school bus at the KC Speedway and they started by stopping at a Menards I drive past all the time. like, wait, HANG ON I KNOW THAT STORE.
I got a confession to make. I been work on Heavy Trucks and now work on Buses for Austin Capital Metro. I been doing this since 1979. I have worked with several female mechanics and have mixed feelings about the job they can do. Well I been watching Faye and I’m really impressed. In a very few of the videos I watched and can tell she a person I would let work on my personal vehicles if I would ever let anyone do that. Keep making these your doing great.
I was hoping you guys would do a Duramax 01-07 for the hybrid build. I hope that's what this is for. If you take the LB7 out and don't need it for the hybrid build, you can keep it for parts for the old tow truck or sell it, or heck, build a diesel race truck/car. Or an LB7 rock crawler or power a boat. It's just a badass engine that has a very supportive aftermarket. Relatively low cost to unlock ridiculous power from that thing, then you can throw on the 5 mode tuner so you got your economy cruise mode, race mode, tow heavy mode, stock...etc. 10500 pound rear axle. But to unlock that capacity you gotta put some airbags. Get the pump rub kit for the transfer case. I had an 02 2500hd LB7 and I'm regretting selling it. I'll get another one in the future, and I'm still gonna buy 01-07 even if I had the $ for a new truck. Those are all great models to work with from stock, though the LB7 is probably the best since it comes pre-deleted stock and is grandfathered in at least right now. Exciting things ahead 😮
That was a nice roadtrip video expedition. 1:33:20 That looks like Kenmore/Tonawanda street you ended up parking it on. I'd love to run into you guys while your down here in Buffalo. I'm sure you come thru here often being right at the Peace Bridge, to 190/I-90 corridor. Hope I see you driving by some time. That was a good score on that truck. You never mentioned what you ended up paying for it. Hopefully you got a good being it was 'non-running' l. I'd say $10k would be a great deal to buy, but being a southern truck it was probably a lot more....like $25k? Anyways Happy holidays & can't wait to see where you're headed w\ Edison & everything else you have going. 👍🏻👌🏻🛠️🔧🔩💨☃️🍻
I love these old GMT800 trucks! Have had a few myself but recently got my first duramax. Amazing to see what can be done in a pinch, coolant recovery was genius!
I enjoyed seeing all of this work and prep done, but does seem like for all the time spent he could’ve hauled it back in less time. Appreciate seeing all the work and the explanation behind it. Looks like actually a fun trip and fun figuring out the issues and getting back home under its own power.
This was a great Christmas special Rich. I only wish I had, had time to actually watch it on Christmas day! I'll remember your blown headgasket trick for the future. I drove a Vauxhall Astra around for 18 months with a failed headgasket I just had to put water in it with the hose pipe every morning and I was putting a litre of waste oil in it every 400 miles and if you can believe it it never left me walking!
Just had a Fass fail on my VP44 24v this fall. Piece of junk, it was brand new when I put it on the truck in 2009. Lol, I didn't hesitate to order another one. Best fuel system on the market.
I drove an F450 with a 6.0 with blown head gasket for about 12k miles. It burned a little coolant but never let me down until it cracked a head from the heat. Even then it ran good enough to drive. I sold it as a project after it was approaching 370k miles on the stock, not rebuilt engine. It was abused its whole life. The 6.0 has a bad rap but after that truck holds a place in my heart.
I did something similar with a 6.0L Powerstroke. Didn't have a blown head gasket, but the cylinder head was cracked such that it pushed fuel into the coolant while running, and coolant into the injectors while sitting. So, I put a slit into the radiator cap gasket so it would never build pressure. Worked great since the thermostat opened too early anyway and it ran at 160*F all the time. Just had to pull diesel fuel out floating at the top every month or two lol
My 07 3500 4d dually 310k miles. Was a fass supplied truck crank no start. After replacement of rail pressure sensor and regulator ended up being the cp3. Changed it out in the driveway on the coldest day of the century.
The headline just reminded me i drained the antifreeze from my tractor removing the cab and haven’t refilled it yet. I’m going to set the gallon on the seat and come right back to see the video.
Please do more full videos on the LLY, I’m looking to do the same to my LLY as well. Just wanting to make it a more reliable tow rig to pull our 32’ camper anywhere in America! Keep up the great work Rich!! 🤘🏻
Great video. I ran my duramax without a cap for 6 months until it was getting cold and had to buy coolant. Top up In the morning and when I leave the job site. 😅😅. Great job guys. 👍
friend of mine had that mystery o ring that costed 8 injectors cp3 when they finally found that o ring stuck in the main fuel line. love my 05. doing a fas fuel upgrade in the new year. happy new and love all what you guy do
First give away it was a well used farm/ranch truck, busted upholstery on the left hand side of the drivers seat. Always the first thing to go on a work truck when you are in and out many times a day.
I had a 2005 2500 6.0 4x4 extended cab. After it rusted out I gave it to a farmer friend to do off road chores. The 05 is awesome. My next truck was from Florida. 2001 Dodge 3500 Cummins.
You recommend going south to buy a project car/truck. That sounds like a good idea. Maybe you could do a short segment on how you personally go about getting the paperwork in order for these export/import vehicles.
Merry Christmas Rich and gang…what an awesome find. I’m always blown away by the vehicles that get orphaned down South. That truck definitely deserves a rebuilt engine…and some new lower seat skins. What a machine. Ingenious fix to keep it running on its own power. Epic road trip and excellent content as always. Rich if you end up selling that truck after the build I’d love to own it.
Wow awesome video. Nice Christmas Day relief for me the video was great. Funny because I thought I saw you going towards the rainbow bridge I recognized the F-350 but then I blew it off when I seen the trailer and truck on the back. Pretty cool I guess it was you after all.
Thanks for the info on these machines.. I own my 1st diesel (04 Ram 5.9 Cummins) so im all ears, especially on the fuel systems.. truly enjoy this channel... enjoy the rust free vehicles from Texas!😂😂
Keep the fuel filters changed, oil changed, and transmission fluid/filter changed and you'll have a good time. Upgrade to fass lift pump if you ever have fuel issues.
Right in my area of living. I live just north of Fort Worth. The last company I worked at we had an 02 Chevy 2500 crew long bed 4x4 diesel. That truck had over 400k on it and still run good. They just stopped running it because it was older. Nothing wrong with it. I drove it myself for almost a year. Has leather and everything.
Did the same with my Land Rover 200tdi (2.5 turbo diesel). Oregon to Florida to Oregon. Pressurizing the coolant circuit. Then it popped between cylinders 2 and 3 and I changed the head gasket in 3 hours in front of a NAPA. Blew at 11 am, Heading north on I5, eating pizza at 70 mph by 2 pm.
I'm so glad Andy is now a part of the Deboss Garage team. 🤣 I also think it's really great that Rich is working with high school kids and teaching them the trade! He doesn't have to do that, but he does.
I did that, had a blown head gasket, cracked the lid on the expansion tank and drove it for months on end. It would only puke out a little coolant coming to a stop and after shutting the engine off.
I feel the same way about my 08 suburban, love that generations body style! When I bought my 08 3 years ago I was searching for 08-12 and mine was the cleanest with lowest miles and had just had a top end rebuild!
As someone interested in a square body burb I’d love to do what you’ve done but I can’t imagine what that trips cost you. Can’t wait for the future of this truck.
The GMT800 is the best looking line of trucks of all time. Idc what anyone says. I've had multiple of them over the years, tahoe, yukon, sierra all in different variations. Can't wait to see this project down the road again.
Im not a Duramax or Chevy guy at all, but a Cat Eye 1500 w/ a 5.3 in it is always a good buy, things are bulletproof. Id do a Cat Eye 25/3500 if it was solid axle swapped with a cummins in it, the maxy pad and IFS on the front can jump off a bridge
My 6.0 powerstroke went from central oregon to Sacramento and back several times with a blown head gasket and a hot tune and heavy foot and never had much more greif
Good tip to help replace a belt, especially in the dark by the side of the road is to mark the belt route with permanent marker somewhere before it blows or changing it. They can be a maze sometimes.
I drove my '96 GMC 6.5l with a blown head gasket from Wyoming to Michigan, and then some, and probably part of the trip from MI to WY too... If finally got bad enough to hydrolock when I shut it off. Luckily in my driveway... :)
My moms 01 Civic had the same HG issue at 310k miles. It drove for another 2 winters and a summer before we finally scrapped it.....because the tq converter blew up. That's why my current winter beater is a Civic. ;)
Great work Deboss boys. Never seen Rich sound cranky before but getting awakened suddenly to fix a problem would do it. PS keep up the most excellent music mix.
well I kicked back and enjoyed the whole video and its was pretty impressive I would've never believed it unless I saw it myself to be honest with ya. You score nice nice truck.
as a man of the rotton world of the east coast of canada you going on about theres no rust i was like thats cool.....but can we talk about the fact that the little impact drove the torsion key bolt in that is honestly crazy!
I really enjoyed watching you build the Ford, but it would also be nice to see a build where its not crazy custom. Just a nice clean "upgraded" stock, bulletproof the engine and do some nice aftermarket touches but nothing crazy.
I believe someone at a magazine used a garden sprayer with a check valve plumb directly into the radiator. Every few laps they pump the sprayer amd top off the water in the radiator and engine under pressure.
I love this video already and I'm only twenty minutes in. One of the all time greats on the channel for sure. Great truck selection too, can't wait to see more of it
I think I had a cracked head In my 7.3, it only leaked bad when I pulled up hill, so I routed a separate washer fluid system to spray over the rad while I was climbing.... worked perfectly for years.... the truck burned to the ground because of bad trailer wiring.
My poor little LLY has a small headgasket leak that started around 450k. Welp, here we are, pulled the boat all summer at 550k. Water pumper went out and was replaced which helped circulate a little to keep it cool here in Texas.
