When you watch golf there’s nothing quite like watching the pros smash their drives 300 plus yards far into the distance.
But how far does the average golfer hit the ball?
Thanks to great advances in golf tracking technology from the folks at Arccos, top analysis by GolfWRX and the latest Golf Distance Insights Report produced by the USGA and R&A we now have great data available to answer this question.
So in this video present the latest information broken down by age, gender, handicap and swingspeed!

Just turned 70, carry a 3 handicap, play course at 6600 yards - Drives average 260, 4 wood 235, 4 iron - 200, 8 iron 150, PW - 130. I might be an anomaly but I play 4 times per week up in Northeast. The only thing consistent about golfers is their inconsistencies. You can play with someone who hits a straight nearly 300yd drive and on the very next hole loses his ball deep into the woods to the right. I will steal a quote and alter it a bit "golf is a game that consists of using a club that has a ball at one end and a fool on the other."
@isambardk4390
@isambardk4390 3 года назад
A couple of observations. I took up golf in my mid 50s after many years of competitive racquet sports. Was taught the classic PGA method...use the big muscles, coil from the ground up etc. For many years hit my 7 iron 155 yards, driver 230-240 (sea level) and short game rather than distance was the issue. I work out diligently and was well into my 70s before distance dropped off, in part because various parts of my body objected to the stresses of the modern swing. During the past year devoted much time to researching the golf swing and was struck by Padraig Harrington's comment in his excellent series of tuition videos. He said that for most players the swing should be all about the arms and hands. For elite golfers..maybe..it was about the body. I also became increasingly convinced by the (few) teachers who argued the classic teaching of "pulling with the lead arm" makes no sense because the golf swing is fundamentally a throwing motion. So now my "new" swing is virtually all arms/wrists/hands with body reacting to the swinging of the club, and I'm consciously hitting the ball with my right (trail) hand. Swing speed is back up and at age 79 I am consistently driving the ball 220 yards at sea level on well watered ie., soft, fairways. Second observation. It's not just about swing speed. Smash factor is also critical. Male pros make much better contact with the ball than amateurs and gain significant distance as a result. Women pros have an even better smash factor than the men. So as we age putting more focus on how well we hit the ball rather than how fast we swing the club, can recoup some of the distance we would otherwise lose.
@GolfingFocus
@GolfingFocus 3 года назад
That's great insight IsambardK and huge thanks for sharing. I really like Padraig Harrington's stuff too and think his focus on the average golfer compared to better players makes so much of his advice so much more valuable. He was one of the first ones for example over a decade ago recommending all normal golfers should be playing hybrids and ditching the long irons. Think your point about different swings is also a great one. So many coaches these days, in all sports and not just golf, are teaching 'one way' and not taking into account different approaches and swings. Think if a lot of teaching pros had a Jim Furyk type swing for example coming to them for help they would be telling him how much he's doing wrong and needs to change when that's a swing that's played on multiple Ryder Cups and won the US Open! Totally agree with your thinking on the women pros too. Think there are loads of things the average golfer can learn from them also which currently we miss by focusing too much on the PGA Tour.
@pete3953
@pete3953 3 года назад
@@GolfingFocus Most mid and high handicappers would be better served by improving how we hit the ball rather than how fast. So, choose correct compression ball for our club head speed, get the correct tee height and driver loft for optimum trajectory and spin, improve smash factor, cultivate a draw. All stuff we can do to gain significant distance without swinging harder which risks both damage to our bodies and damage to our swing consistency. The other advantage is that with somewhat slower speed but better striking of the ball our accuracy improves. 220 down the middle will usually beat 280 into the trees, rough, water or out of bounds and you'll save money on golf balls.
@GolfingFocus
@GolfingFocus 3 года назад
Don't think there's any doubt@@pete3953 that improvements in how consistently we hit the ball would make a huge difference to anyone. Tempo is absolutely vital and gets lost by lots of people, including me, when searching for those few extra yards. The accuracy vs distance debate is a fascinating one also as according to the stats averages sacrificing 60 yards off the tee for more accuracy is a poor trade more often than not. Agree with you obviously that 220 down the middle is better than 280 into water or out of bounds etc but whether it's better than 280 yards in the rough is another question. The averages say no and of course there's always the risk amongst the average player that the 220 shot ends up in a bad spot also meaning they are just 60 yards further away in a similarly bad position to the 280 yard shot.
@pete3953
@pete3953 3 года назад
@@GolfingFocus I probably overstated when I said 220 vs 280. For the average golfer I suspect the difference between his/her longest but inaccurate drive and down the middle with somewhat less speed, is going to be much less than 60 yards. In any event I don't think averages tell the story in this case. Rather each individual has to do the experiment. From my personal experience and watching friends, straighter and somewhat shorter usually produces lower scores especially if we take the time to sharpen our short game, which doesn't depend on strength or flexibility. As for getting out of the rough...pros and the better amateurs can recover pretty well , the rest of us frequently have problems....assuming we even find our ball. An interesting statistic would be how many strokes mid/high handicappers lose per round to lost balls, unplayable lies, out of bounds/3 off the tee. I'm guessing most of us would score much better if we focused on accuracy and short game rather than striving for extra distance.
@GolfingFocus
@GolfingFocus 3 года назад
@@pete3953 , think you've hit the nail on the head in terms of the course management decisions the average player is faced with but which I suspect doesn't think about nearly enough. Know I am very guilty myself for example of just grabbing the driver out the bag each long hole and just hitting it without any thought to the plan for the hole and what my bail out shot should be, where I even stand on the tee to aim correctly etc. Following that lack of thought I know I will waste countless shots. As for counting the shots which end up 'unplayable' off the tee you are absolutely spot on in my view and we're about to do a video on such stats which we think should be focus for all regular amateur players. The only slight issue I still have though is when it comes to the distance thing and how it affects how much improvement a player can make as the stats, whether they be average or not, are absolutely clear in that there will be a ceiling to how good you can get based on how far you hit the ball. There will be very very few if any single figure or lower double digit players who will hit the ball on average 200 yards on standard length golf courses so if someone is really keen to get their handicap right down they have to take on increasing their distances at some point if they are not there currently.

Nice synopsis of the issue, thanks. I've read most of the comments here and, as expected, the usual suspects have weighed in (you know, "I average 280-290 off the tee..."). Watch the pros on TV. Most of THEM only hit it 278 or so in the air off the tee, and get another 30 yds. from the roll out on the green-like surfaces of PGA fairways. In the thirty years I've played, I could count on one hand the number of amateurs I've seen who could hit a drive that far--and have fingers left over. Your figures are sobering but, I think, far more accurate than the apochraphal claims of many amateurs.

Average driving distance on tour is really misleading. When a tour player tees up a ball on a par 4 or 5, regardless of what club they are using that distance is used. Averaging 280 with a driver is very good. I'm right around that myself... Just curious what kind of average you get on a 3 iron, carry distance.? Mine is right a 200 to 210.
@sandersson2813

So true. All these people claiming they hit it 300 are most likely mistaken. They'd need a swing speed around 120 and also a very high smash factor and optimum launch angle and spin to average that sort of distance. Most decent amateurs and by that I mean people better than scratch probably swing around 110-114 mph.

For men of all ages playing the men's tee box (5700 to 6200 yards), distances are as follows for Driver swing speeds of 80 to 90 mph: Wedges (Lob, Sand, Gap, PW): should carry between the 50 and 100 yard markers at the outdoor driving range. Only the PW should roll out past the 100 yard marker. Short/Mid irons/hybrids (PW, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5) should carry between the 100 and 150 yard markers at the outdoor driving range. You may get roll out past the 150 with the 6 and/or 5. Long irons/hybrids (5, 4, 3, 2) should carry between the 150 and 200 yard markers at the outdoor driving range. Ball should not roll out past the 200 yard marker except perhaps when hitting off a tee with the 2 hybrid to practice lay-up drives. Drivers (9.5 to 12.5 degrees) should carry close to or past the 200 yard marker at the outdoor driving range, but not roll out past the 250 yard marker. IF YOU FIND THESE DISTANCES TOO SHORT FOR YOU: then you need to move back 1 tee box level to the Championship Tees (not 2 levels back to the Pro Tees). Your Driver swing speed could be 95 to 105 mph. If your Driver swing speed is 110 to 120 mph you should be playing Pro tees. If your Driver swing speed is over 120 mph you should be playing the TIPS (Pro Tour Tees).

I'm 60 and don't drive over 225 yards; but, I built a 36 yard, 2 Par hole on my front yard and have had over 17,000 shots on it this year in the 30 to 44 yard range, and have dropped to a handicap of 10.2 because of all that short approach work. Distance isn't everything. Look at Calvin Pete, he seldom drove over 200 yards because of an injury to an arm; yet, he still played competitively as a pro.
@GolfingFocus
@GolfingFocus 3 года назад
Not questioning for a minute Jeff that short game work is not important and will help sharpen scores and bring them down. Main point is really that when it comes to the stats there is a ceiling on how well you can perform 'on average' based on how far you hit it. Are always exceptions like Calvin Pete, Corey Pavin etc who didn't hit the ball very far but were very successful but on average it's always the longer hitters who do the best.

Thanks for summarizing the data with good graphics. I believe ARCOS is total distance, not carry. Is that true for R&A/USGA data too? The WRX data is labeled carry. I use carry distance on my bag tag and try to be honest. My 5 wood (18*) and 22*hybrid are all over the place. Distances from there down is more accurate. I'll bet if you looked at the range instead of average for these clubs you'd see the same variability.
@GolfingFocus
@GolfingFocus 3 года назад
Yup, Arccos is 'total' distance and R&A/USGA data is the same - total distance measured from the teeing ground to the point where ball comes to rest. Agree the average figure masks a good bit and a range as you say would be ideal. My absolute preference also now would be for distances by the degree of clubs rather than the number as every set seems to be different these days.

What is interesting to me is how the average driving distance by age has pretty much reduced across the board from 2017 to 2019 (and by almost 5 yards for my age group of 50-59) despite supposed advances in technology. Given that trend (which seems to be the opposite of what they say has happened in the pro game) why do the R&A and USGA feel the need to roll the ball back for the average amateur golfer by 2030?

It's a great point Stuart and lofts have also unquestionably gotten stronger over the last 20-30 years. Good recent example I saw was comparing the Titleist DCI Golf 7-iron from 1991 with the latest T200 7-iron which was 5 degrees stronger and 1/2 inch longer. Given the data in the Arccos surveys were from their current users we can only assume that most people are using relatively modern clubs with stronger lofts but impossible to tell. For the pros we did an analysis last year of the drivers the top 100 PGA Tour pros are using - golfingfocus.com/what-driver-is-most-used-on-the-pga-tour-top-100-player-analysis/ - and driver lofts ranged from 5º to 12.4) with most common driver loft being 9º.

Wouldn't you agree that the R&A have dropped the ball on their main objective? That is "To maintain the skill of the golfer as the over-riding factor in performance and not put it in the hands of the manufacturers". We have equipment nowadays which encourages swinging as fast as you possibly can regardless of strike location. The penalty for missing the geometric centre of the clubface has been dramatically reduced. Failure on the part of the R&A in my opinion.

@GolfingFocus Год назад
This is the hornets nest for sure Craig and I've no idea of the right answer if I'm honest. I used to firmly be alongside you about the rulemakers not controlling this well enough and minimising skill but the more I read and listen to the greyer I think the subject gets. These guys are just so good now and so professional that I wonder if they are just not inevitably going to get better and better and make older golf courses look silly. Listened to a podcast where Scott Fawcett was talking and he makes some fair points about do you really think if you made Dustin Johnson play with a driver the same size as his 3 wood it would really make that much difference? He would still hit it 300 yards easily as his ball striking is just that good. And rather than the size of the club it seems to me to be the ball that has had the most effect over everything else over the last 20-30 years or so. And then also these are the top 0.001% of golfers and should the rules be set just for them as the rest of us need all the help from the technology as we can get as the game is just so hard? Then if we start having different rules for them than for us does that ruin the game?

"Average" numbers can be deceiving. Many golfers consider themselves average, yet most have no idea how many truly bad golfers there really are, dragging at the numbers, making "average" a lot worse than would be expected. At 56, hitting the ball an average of 270 (with my old R7 driver), I still consider myself average. I know plenty of guys my age that absolutely spank the ball, way past mine, yet my iron play and short game helps me outscore them most of the time. I will admit, I've lost a little distance in the last few years (5 yds. or so). However, I'm still well within iron range on every approach. Strangely, I have lost zero distance with my irons. It feels the same now, as it did when I was 30.
@GolfingFocus

Agreed Dan that's there only so much you can learn from an 'average number' and a lot of the time is for interest as much as any practical value. An average of 270 seems more than decent to me and as you say the only number that really matters is the score at the end!

I've heard that golfing in cold air decreases carry. If it does is the loss significant I wonder. Here in eastern canada the temperature will go from 10 to 30 C in the run of a season. I know that sometimes I feel like I really pound the ball out there but when I stand there and do the math... reality quickly sets in :)
@bbyrd130
@bbyrd130 3 года назад
It 100% affects distance. When the club and ball are cold, they don’t transfer energy as much. Also, cold air is more dense which equals more friction and drag on the ball than warmer air. I live in Florida and can tell a difference in a well struck winter driver vs a well struck summer drive. I think the math states that assuming you made two perfect swings (lol I’m still waiting on one) and all things were equal other than the temperature, the ball goes approximately 2 yards less for every 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) the temperature drops
@dumbdumber1885

Cold air a big factor for sure and agree totally with the other replies. What I'd really like to know these days also is the distance by degrees of clubs, particularly the irons, rather than just by the iron number as these don't seem very consistent between different people's sets these days.

What is not mentioned is that tour pro's have access to clubs and shafts that the rest of the world does not get from "off the shelf clubs". i.e. the spec of all "legal" Drivers off the shelf is 100 mph swing no more than 250 yds carry. If I spent a week hitting balls at the Ping/Callaway factory I am sure I would get a driver that goes 280 - 290 like tour players who have physiques from 140lbs to 240 lbs and stand 5 foot 5 to 6 foot 5. Definitely agree Alan the pros have the pick of all the equipment although not entirely convinced we could all get up to their level of distances simply by getting access to their gear. I think 'consistency' is part of their key advantage also and hitting it those distances over and over again. Interesting listening to Dustin Johnson this week that he's 'reigning it in' to hit it as far as he does and could get to Bryson distances with a long driver if he wanted to. He just chooses not to for consistency. Think we could therefore get another 20, maybe 30, yards with a trip to the manufacturers but not convinced it would be as high as 50 yards, particularly on a consistent basis. Would be nice mind you to get the chance to try without having to worry about the cost of the clubs and shafts!

Those are good numbers Kim though must confess I'm doubting the importance of chipping/putting now vs. the long game after reading a lot of stuff by all the stats guys. The long game appears to be more important when you look at the numbers now and Mark Broadie's (pioneer of Strokes Gained metric on PGA Tour) mantra is - “If you can’t putt you can’t score, but if you can’t drive you can’t play”. I was brought up in the 'drive for show, putt for dough' school however the stats now seem to show that's a myth.

@@GolfingFocus With all due respect, comparing stats when it comes to amateurs and pros, they are night and day. I played golf with Jim Herman when he was a kid. @@belaireguy4117 Couldn't agree more about the consistency point and how good these guys really are. My brother is a pro and made it to the final qualifying round for the British Open a couple of times but although a fantastic player was still a long long long long way off the standard of guys such as Jim Herman. The guys on the PGA Tour, European Tour etc are without doubt exceptional. Not sure I can agree with you on the stats point though. Mark Broadie's analysis has been on millions of rounds of regular golfers as well as pros and he has found this importance of the long game over the short game at all levels of the game - between a 110 scoring golfer and a 100 scoring golfer, between a 100 scoring player and a 90 scorer etc. Must confess it took me a while to get my head around given how much the primacy of the short game has been drummed into me since starting to play. Then again also it's the great thing about golf in that none of it really matters apart from the main stat on the scorecard. Thanks for the feedback also on the video. It is much appreciated.

I play some courses where you aren't rolling over 150 yards. We have a course women won't play. Water and conditions of the course kill the roller method. Every club matters. To be the best you have to be great with all clubs. Wether you hit it 250 or 300, every shot counts. Driver, PW, and putter are my 3 most used clubs. And on holes 275-360 yards those are generally the only clubs I use. Which is usually about 9 of 18 holes. Par 5's are driver, 5 wood, PW, and putter for me. Play a course with a rating over 70 and you are not going to fair well with the roller method. Have fun and keep swinging, good to see at your age you are still out there doing it.

Funny how so few realize that as long as you can drive it 200 yds. or so you can reach most par 4s and 5s in regulation as long as you know how far you hit your irons. New improved clubs make it much easier to not have the big miss more than it allows anyone to gain extreme distance. I average 260-270 with a driver and I am usually longer than all the guys claiming a 300 yd average. My 5 iron carry is 180 to 190 and if you can’t hit a 5 iron that far you can not drive it 300 yards in normal flat conditions.

100% agree knowing your exact distances is an often overlooked component in all this and that the game improvement and even super game improvement irons and hybrids are making it much easier to hit better and 'less bad' shots with the longer clubs now into the green. Don't think there's any doubt a bit of extra distance helps and the shorter iron you can play in the better. Was interesting watching one of the TaylorMade videos from a couple of years back where Tiger (pre-accident) was saying he would still regularly beat them all - DJ, Rory, Jon Rahm, Jason Day - if the game was 72 holes with 5 -iron in only but the problem he has is they are too far ahead of him off the tee now for this to make as much of an impact.

The driver distance, as much as I like think I can do better, is basically my average on the Trackman. Off the tee my pitching wedge is about 155 yards. For years I couldn't hit my driver because I had such a slice on the ball, until recently getting x-stiff shafts on all clubs.
