repcsi wow that’s awesome! A real piece of history right there and it shows how reliable that Rotary engine ended up being!

In race tunes, Wankel engines are very reliable. They can premix good 2 stroke type oil in the fuel, which keeps the apex seals lubricated. The lack of reciprocating internal parts means constant high rpm use does not cause excess wear, though going too high can lead to apex seal chatter and housing wear as they bounce over the lobes in the housing. I am curious how much of he current engine is the original race winning engine. Wankel engines have a bad reputation of needing rebuilds, but they are also quite simple to rebuild. Think of the Wankel like a Dagwood sandwich. Outside housing, rotor housing with rotor, internal housing, etc etc etc outside housing. The "block" is actually a stack of different parts. You replace any parts that are beyond usable spec.. you don't replace the entire "block" since it doesn't have one big block like a normal piston engine. FWIW, I had an RX7 and RX8- almost 20 years ownership combined. They are great fun to wring out daily but also need proper maintenance/care to last a reasonable amount of time between rebuilds.

The 787B was tuned for reliability hence why it was running 700 hp @ 9000 rpm. They said after the race was done and the engine was inspected that it could have run another 24 hours no problem. The engine was capable of 930 hp @ 11000 rpm but they purposely limited it to 9000 rpm. It potentially could have run 24 hours at a higher horsepower level which would have meant even more domination!
@jmirsp4z

i think they had a gearbox from porsche and it couldn't take the full power so that's why they ran it with 700hp... not 100% sure tho..

ik this is 4 years old but i bet it could be one of the fastest cars on the track if they had a different gear box coupled with the 930hp it could have done. Since the engine was the most reliable part of the car. If the engine actually was able to do another 24h race unlike many of the other car's engines, then Mazda was definitely limiting it with what it could have done.

You're downshifting and rev match look great! However, the 787B doesn't need it. The locked transmission allowed the car to automatically match the revs when downshifting, which was one of the beauties of the car and saved more gas in the race. The car itself was a true marvel and legend for its time. Great Driving!

The 787B had better reliability, but it also had a weight advantage over the other Group C cars (something like 50-100kg) as well as a fuel advantage.
@SonicBoone56
@SonicBoone56 6 лет назад
Rotaries are anything but fuel efficient, so I'd imagine so.
@frylucas
@frylucas 6 лет назад
Make that 200-300 KGs, the 787B was ridiculously low weight compared to it's competitors on that race. In fact, the 787B is the reason FIA banned anything with less than 1.000 KGs of weight from Le Mans from what I heard. But yes, it was by far the most reliable car on that race (much to the dismay of all the "lolololol rotaries are unreliable" folks), the fact the engine was still brand-sparklingly new when they disassembled the car post-race is an unique reliability achievement on it's own... but it wasn't fuel efficent at all. it drank more gas than your average finn drinks alcohol in the podium of WRC or F1 races, but the compensation came in form of the tires lasting much longer than it's competitors, resulting in less stops. For reference, in an interview with Isami Amemiya (Founder of RE Amemiya, legendary tuner of RE cars) here in RU-vid, Amemiya-san talks a bit about the days they raced in the GT300 class of JGTC/Super GT with a N/A 3-Rotor RX-7 FD3S. Ama-San mentions the car had the same fuel consumption of higher-class GT500 cars which was a drawback, but in compensation, they could go sometimes entire races without exchanging tires on the car, They won the GT300 championship title in 2006 with that RX-7. So while they aren't "fuel efficient", they are very efficient in performance and tire consumption.
@MyLonewolf25
@MyLonewolf25 6 лет назад
Wulfe tires is what eats up lap time and pit stops in an endurance race The weight advantage comes from how light the engine was and because they didn’t make a lot of torque so you could lighten the drivetrain significantly
@coast2coast00
@coast2coast00 6 лет назад
The reason car 55 won is because they knew they were the slowest car, so the team told the drivers to just go all out. Running fast laps the whole race, they were faster than the competition who were being gentle with their cars, and the car was reliable enough to take it for 24 hours.
@Logan912
@Logan912 5 лет назад
@@coast2coast00 The other reason being that the leading Mercedes broke down. The 787b was a mid-pack car at best, its win at Le Mans was a fluke, and neither it nor its predecessors won any other race.

The 787B is sick! Back when i was a kid i was a big fan of Group C. This car came out for GP Miami when i was 16 and i had pit area passes. I ended up getting a good long look at a lot of the details of this car, as well as seeing and hearing it start and run. Unfortunately i only got to see it run for a few laps before an engine fire broke out and team Mazda DNF'd, but it was definitely a cool thing to see. IRL it sounded absolutely INSANE. Probably my second favorite Group C car after Nissan.
