I lost 150lbs on very strict Keto within 2 years, & have kept it off for 2 years now - total 4 year journey. I lost my first 60lbs in 6 months, then I turned on the afterburners & went OMAD & IF. My lipids now are: Total Cholesterol = 169, Triglycerides = 42, HDL = 64, VLDL = 9, LDL = 96 I went from 321lbs to 170lbs, & I’m now 62 years old.

Hey Heather, I'd like to give you a tip I don't hear anyone talk about: components of scale weight. This is very important to have a concept of to prevent discouragement from weight fluctuation. There are four main components to what we see on the scale: non-fluctuating weight of bones and organs and the fluctuating weight of stored muscle glycogen (which adds water weight) and food in transit. Of course, whether someone fasts or eats denser Keto foods, within a couple of days most people will notice several pounds of weight loss for this reason as well as losing water weight because the body is burning up the muscle glycogen and the water it's stored in without replenishing the supply. I've learned over a year and a half that I have about a 7lb swing from low to high (low being after a 40hr fast) to a high of +7lbs if I am consuming 100g of carbs a day at least (if I eat keto style I only regain the food weight at approx 3-4lbs). After the low weigh-in, weight loss slows to a crawl because I have to skip approx 7 meals to lose 1lb without exercise (7 @ 500ish cals = 3500 = 1lb) and on the high end I would have to overeat even more than that to regain 1lb. I lost 25lbs last year and am aiming at another 15 before I'm done and have not regained anything. Weighing myself every day has been the key to maintenance for me because I know where my high zone should be and if I see it, I'll skip a meal or do a longer fast to clear out glycogen and give myself room for energy storage before my body decides it has no choice but to store energy as fat. I hope this gives you a tool for your journey!

I lost 10 kilograms (22 pounds) in 4 months. I have to lose 4 kilograms (8 pounds) to reach my goal. I hit a plateau, I recently did a “reset” (maintenance) now I’m starting from the beginning. - 20-4 fast. - 1 hour work out (swimming, yoga, strength training, walking, running I do exercises I enjoy), 7 days a week. - Lots of water, fish, eggs, vegetables, berries and green tea. - Zero alcohol. - 7-8 hours sleep. This combination absolutely changed my life! I had people telling me I’m losing weight too quickly. I don’t think there’s a too fast or too slow, as long as you are in control and know your end game (YOUR body will tell you if something is wrong) other people’s opinions shouldn’t matter. My retort would always be “are you my doctor”?! “Then stop acting like you are”!! Thank You Thomas, for your insightful videos! Regards, 🇿🇦

I don’t know if I agree with the idea that you can not reverse diabetes. Before my keto journey in 2018/19, I was 415lbs w/ an A1C of 12.6… I’m now 250 w/ an A1C of 5.2 (and that change came very quickly after starting keto), and I do not have any Insulin or sugar issues even when I’ve been off keto for a long amount of time. I’m currently labeled as being In Diabetic “remission”

Proteins, natural fats and a bit of veggies, can't stand not having some fiber. Strength/resistance training and 20k steps. The weight just melts off. People say I'm losing weight too fast but I feel great, and I'm consistent. Once you find what works for you, don't mind the naysayers.

I notice that cardio doesn’t do much for me, when it comes to weight loss. When I have done just cardio vs cardio + weight resistance training (75 push ups per day, dumbbell, and door gym), I saw that I lost more weight over 1-2 days. The more muscle you have = more calories burned? If I may, what did you do (if anything) in regards to fasting? Did you do IF fasting or longer fasts like 48 hours? I lose between 3-6 pounds per 48 hour fast. At least that’s what it has been for the last 1.5 months of doing this.

Tbh start keto get fat adapted- go carno to feel amazing and learn your body- slowly introduce carbs and learn what works for your body. This is what ive learned from your channel and others and it works. Simple and easy. Biggest tips: walk a shitload, drink more water than you think, go gym, and eat real food.

The 8 weeks & then 2 weeks of maintenance is outstanding advice. I've been taking the Long approach, but, I've lost about 100 pounds over the years. I would lose a chunk of weight & then find how much I'd need to consume to maintain that loss. Yes, initially, I'd add too much back in and gain 5 pounds back, but, with a litter tweaking, I'd find the sweet spot to keep me at my new maintenance weight. The trouble is, that I didn't really try to lose another chunk for a good long while. I bought into the losing weight slowly over time, so, that's part of the reason that I didn't try to lose weight at a faster rate.

I think a lot of the concerns about losing too fast is based on people not keeping a consistent mindset on it. Causing rapid weightloss, they hit a point and regain it. Or the concern of like eating disorders or such.
@hymns4ever197
@hymns4ever197 Год назад
Very good video. It has been conventional wisdom for many years that people should lose weight gradually. Thomas did a good job of addressing most of those concerns. The one issue he did not directly discuss is blood pressure. Losing weight stresses the body and internal organs of which the heart is one. Of course, losing weight should bring down the blood pressure, and probably the sooner the better.
@KittySkyfish
@KittySkyfish Год назад
Maintaining a weight loss is entirely dependent on a correct diet, lifestyle and exercise. Those who are successful at maintenance find these changes psychologically rewarding, in that it is pleasurable to live this eay. I have seen the greatest weight rebounds with those who were burned out doing the healthy things and received greater pleasure in all the things that encourage weight gain.
@KittySkyfish
@KittySkyfish Год назад
@Wordsmith 430 First priority would be managing the amygdala and behaviors related to food and pleasure. Physical satiety can be achieved with many foods, but often it's the healthy meals that fall short of triggering the same intense pleasure response that comes with eating, say, a Chicago style pizza or a big pile of cheese fries. The key to sustaining a weight loss is to know how to keep control of the urges that lead to pleasure-first eating (a diet dominant in unhealthy foods and excess energy consumption) and - importantly - to retrain the senses to find pleasure in foods that promote health.

Thomas I lost 125 lbs in 9-10 months on low carb, then keto and finally carnivore for the last month. I was able to take a A1C from 9 down to 5.7 in six months. At this point my Doctor’s and pharmacist mentioned that I was in remission and no longer a #t2d . I wear a CGM and monitor very closely. My 14 day average glucose level is 4.9 on carnivore. Oh and clearly I’m 100% metform free of any diabetic medication for seven months. So I believe that I’m no longer a “lifestyle “ T2d . However I agree that I would become a T2d if I didn’t keep the lifestyle that I’m now living. Just like our weight. Your 100% correct that we wind rebound when we support our bodies with a strong lifestyle and food choices that guarantee we won’t regain the 100Lbs . I see them as very similar. Keep up the good work, enjoy your channel and stay healthy .

Advice on how to lose weight fast?
@KandiMan
@KandiMan Год назад
@@karalachelle6717 1. Don’t drink any calories (they’re absorbed too fast) 2. Stick to whole foods 3. Reduce or eliminate carb-heavy items, increase protein-heavy items 4. Exercise 3-5x weekly (at least 15 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of focused weightlifting) Drinking calories is one of the easiest ways to blow a diet. Not only is it super easy to consume, the body seems to do a much better job at absorbing the calories (versus solid foods which may not be perfectly digested). I drink water exclusively, only making an exception for a whey protein shake. With protein-rich, carb-low whole foods like meat and veggies and eggs and fish, you get a lot more food volume per calorie and will fill up faster. The obvious trade off is that the food isn’t as tasty or enjoyable as the processed stuff everyone’s addicted to and there’s effort required for preparation. I found seasonings to help with taste and I stick with a relatively small menu of things I can easily prepare, with just enough variety to avoid getting tired of it. I didn’t have it perfect on day 1, I experimented and made adjustments until I got it right. I go to gym daily. I enter with two goals, 1) get my heart rate up for 15 minutes straight, and 2) build muscle and burn out the glycogen within them. So, I get on a treadmill and go at a pace that gets me up to around 150-160bpm and stay there for the allotted time. I then do a specific set of basic weight lifting moves (bench press, squat, barbell row, etc) and commit to doing a little bit more weight or more reps than last time. I focus on a body section a day (legs, chest, shoulders/core, back) and just keep rotating through. I target weights that I can do for 6-10 reps of the given exercise. Most importantly, I committed to being consistent for a sufficiently long time. I liken weight loss to walking across the country; my job is to point myself in the right direction and take consistent steps forward for an unreasonably long time. None of the individual steps have to be extraordinary, it’s not about killing myself in the gym daily and burning out. I just realize that, yes, I’m going to have to take actual uncomfortable measures, but it’s for a finite period with a clear goal in mind. As long as it’s the right plan (direction) and I’m acting on it daily (steps), I’ll hit my numbers in due time.

In the current literature for obesity, one of the toughest items is the sustainability of weight loss due to the adaptation of hunger and satiety signals. These are tough studies to perform, but I’d love to see how the drastic weight changes affect long term changes in grhelin, GLP-1, GIP, etc.

I did the same except I went with multiple 3-4 day fasts for ~30 days. Felt great and kept it off until I hit a stressful time in life and started eating junk as a coping mechanism, which unsurprisingly just made things worse. Now losing weight again with "loose" keto and 1-2 days of fasting per week. I think a lot of people are like me and need a better stress coping mechanism than eating. The gaining of weight in my kind of cases has little-to-nothing to do with the method of weight loss. P.S. by "loose keto" I mean that I eat mostly keto, but do go out to eat occasionally, and don't turn down all non-keto foods offered by friends and family, ie. I loosen up for social situations

@@defeqel6537 People definitely need to reverse their "diet in public, binge in private" habit. Instead of ruining the good times with friends, then being driven to make up for it with late-night munchies, enhance the good times by cheating with friends, and only suffer the diet when alone, where nobody has to be distracted or offended by our abstinence. The problem with narcissists like me is, I only function in front of an audience. That's why abstaining at a party is easier than abstaining at home.

I can speak for myself, but feel like many fall into this same boat. Watching calories is not fun. It was way more simple to go clean Keto, get fat adapted, followed by some OMAD fasting while staying high protein, mix in some 18-6 with some 3 meal days here and there. Throw in some no sugar ice cream with good sweeteners. Most important thing is keep glucose low. So no snaking but when you trip fast a little longer. Clear the slate and get back up. I can be on a 24+ hour fast now and feel like I can do anything I can do after eating lots of carbs back in the day only I feel fresh and not bloated. I still have maybe 20 lbs to lose but the 115 that fell off in the last year makes focusing on that way easier! Thomas thank you! I would be curious how many people you have influenced. Maybe post a pole video and we can all post our results in the comments. I’m sure the comments would be astronomical! You doing the leg work looking for the studies and sharing with the world deserves to be recognized! Thanks again!

How does one lose over a pound a day while still eating?? Not that I need to or anything, I just find those numbers staggering. 1 pound of fat is something like 3500 calories, so I guess the weight lost has been a combination of water, fat and muscle tissue, rather than pure fat? Dang, I'm so blown away by that!

One thing for your viewers to be aware of is that those of us T2 diabetics that have had very high, out of control blood sugar for a wile MUST lower out blood sugar (and by turn loose weight) slowly. The rapid drop of blood sugar has been shown to cause or exacerbate diabetic retinopathy. There are studies out there that show this, and it is why some of the medications come with a diabetic retinopathy warning. I found this out both from a diabetic retinopathy support group as well as my retinal specialist. Learn from my mistakes, and the mistakes of thousands of others out there.

Thomas is way ahead of all of them. There were couple of points in my journey where I lost 15kg in 3 weeks and stopped after, only regained 3kg max at any of those points. In usual week I lost 1kg and there was absolutelly no difference. I can only reasure the more you stay in deficit, the more your body can learn how to burn fat, that means from 15kg in 3 weeks you can go straight into 5 days water only streak and have no regrets when fully fat adapted, this would absolutely obliterate viceral fat under the abs. Regaining fat is restricted only for people that have bad diet.

I also reversed diabetes (at least off meds) and resolved a lot of inflammation issues... blood work all A1, no pain, no issues, feel great. I can't see how this would be bad?!

One issue I encountered with rapid weight loss was developing gallbladder problems, such as gallstones and, more specifically, biliary sludge - the initial stage of gallstone formation. This occurred when I lost weight too quickly (10 kg over six weeks), leading to the removal of my gallbladder, which is a fairly common procedure. My surgeon explained that rapid weight loss causes the liver to release a large amount of cholesterol, which accumulates in the gallbladder, inhibiting its ability to release bile used for breaking down fats in the stomach. I still support rapid weight loss, but as you mentioned, it's essential to approach it correctly with adequate protein, resistance training, vitamins, and so on. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this potential issue.

I lost 25 lbs. in 8 weeks while cycling from coast to coast at the age of 44. My start weight was 228 and I bottomed out at 203. I found a lot of negative side effects. (1) My eating habits didn't change (and probably got worse in terms of quality of food) so maintaining the weight loss would be difficult upon returning home. (2) I had loose skin in my abdomen and thighs. My reading at the time (10 years ago) suggested that particularly fat loss in the thighs could lower blood pressure and consequently metabolic rate, making weight re-gain more likely. (3) Rapid weight loss can contribute to the formation of gall stones. Long story short, within two years of finish the bike ride my gall bladder was removed via emergency surgery and I reached a new all-time high in weight of 270. Lessons. (1) 3 lbs. per week may in fact be too much. (2) Loose skin may bounce back more quickly if you are younger. (3) I had crazy hunger cravings when I returned home after losing so much weight while basically being able to eat anything that I wanted while riding. (4) I started Keto with intermittent fasting three weeks ago. I've lost 14 lbs. I'm still very scared of the yo-yo. But the good things I can say are this: (A) I have almost eliminated sweet cravings. (B) I'm eating healthier than I ever have in my life. (C) The rate of my weight loss is moderating now to 1-2 lbs. per week, which seems more sustainable. (D) Some believe that the autophagy associated with IM reduces or eliminates the saggy skin problem.

Yeah true - its really about mindset. If you have the will, the power and dedication you can power through without gaining much weight back....and the maintenance phase is important followed by dieting again to stop your basal metabolic rate tanking. I definitely don't recommend 500 calories/d unless you are just doing it for several days followed by nearly maintenance because your hunger hormones will take over and you will either pig out eventually or your metabolism will decline greatly and consistent weight loss will be hard. I think IF works best for most people + a few longer fasts because you can be on any healthy diet you want but still remain full and lose weight and have metabolic benefits - for many yrs to come as a lifestyle without a too-restrictive diet.

I eat 1900 calories and lots of protein in my diet. I feel like when I am at my goal weight, I can easily increase by a few hundred calories and maintain it for a longer term. 🤞

After not training for 2.5yrs. I tried to cut by eating vegies Fat and protein Keto but trying to hit 170g to 200g protein. But i coudnt go over 100G. I was getting nauseous like my body telling me enough with the protein. Plus i couldn't even do my warm up set pre Lockdown. Like I waa exhausted. Sure i was training fasted but i trained fasted before. Maybe not keto adapted even with 2wks keto? I used to get adapted in 3-7days I went back to normal eating now and can eat more protein which is weird. Was it all mental only? Planning to bo back to keto soon and try to focus on 200g of protein and what ever fat that meat has.

The issue a lot of people have is that you never talk about the mental side of it. Many people has issues with depressed thought or anxiety. Or are stressed because of work and having children, or having other diseases. Losing a 100 pound is not just "wham bam thank you maam" for them. It's hard. And losing weight is not a fulltime job for them, like it is to you. I love watching your channel, but I just wanted to send this message to others out there. I have also lost a hundred pounds. I did it in 5 years. I have also taken care of my own succesful business, cured myself of ED and been fighting depression and anxiety at the same time + I have a life where I play computergames and play music. I don't do pushups all day. So if you have a "normal" life, then you might consider other solutions than the "wam bam" method.

Type-2 diabetes linked to autoimmune reaction in study by Stanford University School of Medicine and University of Toronto. Type-1 diabetes was linked to autoimmune problems in several previous studies. It is also known that obesity is a risk factor for autoimmune conditions such as diabetes. The immune system mistakenly attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.

I did a lot of fasting after I gained a bunch of weight and I wasn't able to weight train. As I looked in the mirror I didn't seem to loose much muscle mass. But I lost a lot of strength. So me thinking I lost a lot of muscle after I got back in the gym....could I have been preserving mass, but strength is going to be lost regardless? I feel really weak, but in the mirror I don't look a lot different. Are they totally different or go hand in hand?
@user-ib9ky2jo9h
@user-ib9ky2jo9h Год назад
I’ve had stuff like that before. A lot of the strength loss could be your body forgetting the movements too. Sounds more like it. Takes a while to come back and if you get in your head about losing muscle then it might limit you regaining strength
@cenauge
@cenauge Год назад
They're related but not hand in hand. Strength is your ability to do work with the machinery you have. A lot of different factors could keep you from using perfectly good machinery to its limit. The reality is that bigger muscles are always stronger muscles, but that's relative only to smaller muscles in the exact same situation. If you had done the same fasting, etc, but had 15lbs less muscle tissue, you would have been even weaker in the gym. The good news is that strength in your situation should come back as your body adapts to working with the conditions you are giving it, but it may not be to the same extend as when you were eating differently. This is good news because keeping your lean mass means that's one less thing you have spend time and effort to regain.
