Thanks for the memories of a run out in a base Escort. I had many Fords, 3 Escorts, 2 Orions and 1 Mondeo in both '80s and '90s. My Escort saga started with KDW916W, a pre-Popular 1.1 base in '80s-Enamel-Bathroom-Furniture Blue with navy vinyl seats. Very thrashy, one of those lovely Escorts that felt like you were absolutely hammering the tits off it when in fact you were only doing 20 mph. 55/60 mph was very loud on the motorway. Replaced in 1990 with D257LTX, a 1987 1.3 Popular (again OHV and 4spd) in Rosso Red with Lorenzo seats like yours! Good on petrol, only slightly quicker than my 1981 1.1 but had rust poking through just about every seam and join by 1992 already. It leaned horribly going round corners, and my bicycle had wider tyres. I then had F277VGL, a Mercury Grey Orion 1.6 GL 90bhp which absolutely flew until it was stolen and trashed. Then E74RAF, a Maritime Blue Onion 1.6LD 54bhp which was absolutely..... excellent! UMM well, it got me out of a hole. Replaced with K775NGD, a Diamond White mk5 CVH Escort LX 1.4, very pretty-looking with its rear spoiler, dark grey lower sides, sporty 14" trimz, posh velour seats, but it was the SLOWEST of the lot with very heavy steering. I soon changed it for L347GBO, a (VERY) Radiant Red Mondeo 1.8 LX saloon which, (colour aside,) looked deeply bland, but it was by far the best of the lot. I loved it so much I called it Rosie and I kept it until late 2005. And that's it for my '80s and '90s Fords.
Good video! My first car was exactly the same as this, but a Popular Plus. It had a clock and the blanking plate for the radio removed (someone else had put a Sharp one in). Wrote it off in 1998!
The 1.1 OHV was too small and underpowered for an Escort mk3/mk4 body. I had a 1.6 LX 1987 mk4, 90 bhp, 5 speed box, it was nippy, sub 10 secs to 60mph. I also had a 1987 1.3 OHV Escort, 60 bhp 5 speed box, way under powered even struggled on the motorway to stay at 70mph with 4 people in it. Traded it in for a 1991 Sierra 1.8LX in 1993, much better on the motorway. So a 1.1 OHV would be dire, wasn't great in a smaller/lighter Fiesta.
