I loved the scene when he opened the gate, it was just the perfect arch for him. Everything came full circle and I think thats the moment he truly and completely forgave himself. It always seemed like he was holding onto that shred of guilt inside himself and risking his own life to open the door was that guilt finally being set free.
I also love how Gabriel's vision impairment during his sickness in season 8 is the reason Eugene had the idea for defective bullets after Gabriel made mistakes while constructing bullets
I liked how Gabriel kept his faith and still preached despite nearly losing it many times and being scolded and even bullied by everyone for still being religious. “God will save Alexandria because He has given the strength to save it ourselves.” is probably one of the best lines on the show and his best line as a character
Truly. I'm not a big religious person, but even I agreed with Gabriel. God doesn't do stuff for us, he gave us the free will and strength to carry on. Gabriel is defiantly top 5 for me.
One thing you missed is that Eugene said that Gabriel behavior when captured by the Saviors pushed him to rig the Saviors ammo which in the end is what made Rick win the war.
@@darkphoenix5491 Seeing Gabriel in the state he was in after the whole Saviors thing is what made Eugene sabotage the Saviors' ammo supply, making their weapons malfunction during the final battle against Rick's group
Carol and Daryl as well. While the first three go from meek cowards to badasses in their own way, Daryl was always badass but he was a total dick at first, and his time with the group and his brothers tragic death shaped him into one of the most lovable and loyal badasses ever
Idk what anyone says but Carol didn't have a great character development for me just yet. She changed a whole lot and it's great and all but I think she's not done with her arc.
@cassandramollura4233 WDYM? Carol went from a meek wallflower who suffered from domestic abuse to the sneakiest badass who was the demon that fought on the side of the angels and used her previous life as a costume when she needed it. She seemed least likely to survive and headed towards her comic counterpart’s fate and became one of the last characters standing.
Gabriel organizing the retreat from the tower and staying behind for a last stand with his shotgun was probably when I truly realised how great he was as a character. I always liked him, but seeing how far he had come made me apreciate him even more. Also it’s clear to me that his role in season 11 was greatly increased with the abscense of basically every big main or supporting character. Which really just made him shine even brighter. Absolutely one of the best characters of the walking dead. Top five for sure
As someone who couldn’t consistently watch this show after Glen was killed, its nice to see that Gabriel had better character development as the show progressed.
Tbh i after a year of not watching the show i decided to pick up on where i left off and actually things changed after few episodes later our guys found a new refreshed courage to stand up against saviors, they are now actively seeking to destroy those bastards also 7th season gave away much new info about how saviors functioned. Getting exciting because number of new groups and communities discovered by our dudes and there is sarcastic lookin ass negan being tyrant ready to get punished at the very end so im gonna see his punishment but at this point its kinda spoiled for me but atleast i want those saviors getting obilerated atleast.
Gabriel in the beginning represented the last of the Old World Holdouts, people who thought eventually things would go back to normal on their own and that he didn't need to hurt or kill anything because of it. But I'm glad to see that he got rid of that way of thinking once he encountered the last of Terminus and realized that who he was before the end of the world is dead that he has to be a new man now. Suffice to say, he really became one of my favorite characters in the show
The only character who changed as much as Gabe was Carol, but her arc was pretty much done after Lydia saved her in 10x16. Gabe had the perfect end to his arc right at the climax of the finale. It was perfectly executed
"We've been praying for God to save our town, but he's given us the strength to save it ourselves." Chills-absolute chills every damn time. Gabe was a coward, hated he was a coward, did the wrong things but was able to take ACCOUNTABILITY for those things and did his damnest to prove himself and worked on himself to be a better person. No matter how savagely badass he becomes, he is still so compassionate and has a spark of optimism and hope when others would have none. Plus, as I always say, there is nothing cooler and more badass than a bloodthirsty priest in the apocalypse
Gabriel embodies so much of what’s great about the walking dead. Truly getting to see the way a person changes and adapts to a post apocalyptic world. Gabriel’s story feels so complete, and it’s a really compelling one. I’d love to see a video like this for rosita
His Character Growth was unexpectedly one of the best of the show had. It was slow yet realistic, it took him along time to get a hold of the apocalypse and change his mindset about. Once a Humble Cowardice Priest turned into a Responsible Survivor in the span of 4 seasons is a brilliant character arc.
Absolutely got chills when he opens the gates for the Commonwealth at the end, a direct connection and a complete 180° from when we first met him. WHAT AN ARC. Glad he got more screen time after Rick left. I love his arc so so much. Plus he had one of my favourite human kills in the series, him killing Dante is bruuutal, and my turnng point for his badassery **chefs kiss** Every surviving characters journey and evolution throughout this series is fucking top tier.
Wow watching this video about Father Gabriel was very interesting and NGL it made me want to maybe go back and watch TWD but the problem is there's like a million seasons of this show including spin-offs and I don't have the time to catch up so I'll just stick with watching these videos about the show 😅😂
Your wrap up on Gabriel was perfect, he is an incredible passive character and loved the conversation he had with the Reaper's priest! Would love to see a video on Rosita or Eugene
@@mistasomenFrom what i remember, his conversation with Michonne in the whisperers arc was when he was starting to develop more. “Im goddamn sick of being nice” he says.
Gabriel is one of my favorite Characters and is often underrated. Another amazing and very underrated character is Aaron. I'd love to see you do a character analysis on him someday!!
We cannot forget the scene with him and Aaron after being caught by the man with the revolver who forced them to play Russian roulette. Gabe literally talked this man down and was ministering to him all while being moments from death and then when the Man released them and started crying Gabe killed him ruthlessly.
Gabriel went from needing shitting pants to making everyone that runs into him need shitting pants, and I love that about him. That "Call me Gabriel" line was both hilarious and powerful as well. Seeing him go from a coward to a great and fantastic leader and supporting character was fantastic.
to me, Gabriel has always been one of the more realistic characters (with Glenn being the most). His actions make sense, he wavers between his beliefs as he sees more about the world. With survival being key, he lies or deceives while maintaining some level of trust just to live on. Naturally a coward, while naturally being strong. and unlike other people where it took like instantly to become ruthless killers, it was only until the final couple seasons where he felt on par with the rest in combat and leadership.
I think one of the biggest changes for Gabriel is when he is being held hostage in the warehouse and kills that crazy guy, that is something that he NEVER would have done before
He does go from useless annoyance to total badass! I finished the show bc of this channel & community lol and I really liked what they did with Gabriel! Plus he just looks so badass. Still can't wait to watch the spin offs with you all!
didnt realise when watching but your right how fitting it is for his arc to end w him opening the gate to let them in when his start was leaving the door shut in his start at the church
He was my third favorite character in the show by the end. The part where he “sacrifices” himself to save Judith and the rest of the kids in season 10 was probably the best scene in the last few seasons of the show. If they were going to kill off Gabriel that would’ve been the perfect scene to do it in.
I loved this character and this actor. Seth Gilliam showed off his range as an actor. Ft. Gabriel went from coward to badazz. I think he had a similar character arc to Eugene (in a way) so you should do him next! 😅
Amazing analysis. I kind of wish you covered the parts in season 10 and 11 where we see the darkest side of Gabriel tho because we get to see him really adapting to the apocalypse and doing what he feels he needs to do to survive
I recommend that you cover Eugene. My first time watching the show, i thought he was a bafoon but once i started watching the show again, i see that hes smarter than i ever realized
I feel like while TWD suffered when released episode by episode, month by month, I feel like binging it is the best way to experience it, with its... shall we say "unique" storytelling style. Gabriel really shines through TWD when you watch his whole tale unfold in full, and I was really happy with where he landed at the end of S11
One thing I love is as he grows more cold he still believes in god. He questions him more but he still actively prays to him and thinks he is guiding him
I third this, Eugene’s development is actually really interesting and he is one of the most adapted people in the group from from a selfish lair to a selfless leader in his own regard, he did a lot for the commonwealth arc and season 11 as a whole
Great analysis! I remember the exact point that I became a Gabe fan. When he said "God has already saved Alexandria. Because he has given us the power to save it ourselves." That was in 6.09 Now Way Out. His face was full of power and confidence. The coward was gone. After that point I loved him. Yes I wish he had more screentime at different points but it is what it is. It is cool that he got a complete fleshed out arc. Other characters died before their arcs were complete (Noah, Jesus, T dog) or their arcs got rushed in to a hero's death (Merle). I think you should do a character analysis on Hershel next. That would be a great one.
Gabriel plays a small role in the last episode of the blacklist He is almost just like the beggining of this character in twd I know is not related but his play gave me chills it was almost like watching all over the episode he was trapped on the rock
maybe it's the carl brainrot in me but i do feel like carl is the unsung hero to gabriel's development. he's the one convinced rick and co. save him on the top of the rock, he uncovered gabe's sins carved into the wall, he and michonne in turn open the door for him when he sneaked out and got attacked by the walkers. and when rick dismissed him in every turn when they first arrived in alexandria, it's carl who accepted to train gabe to be fit for the new lifestyle he must adapt. had carl not died, i can see their relationship grow even further, especially after rick "died"
Father gabe became a badass. I remember watching the finale live and when he opened the gate I got goosebumps and teared up, remembering where he came from. He had a great ending and character arc.
He outright becomes THE leader. Not crossbow boy, not sword lady. He does. Not saying he was leader the whole time, kinda was though. He outright BECOMES THE LEADER. As in the perfect one. I really hope he comes back and lives to the end of the story. I remember watching some episodes back when it first aired. Immediately I knew he was my favorite. He was just WAY too different from the others. I never even made the connection between him and the people who took Beth. Despite them saying it. He looked and acted like a real coward so I never bought it.
I watched the finale for the first time yesterday while on my work break i really wanted to cry when he opened the gate because i realized he came full circle
Just stumble across this series of videos. Really enjoying it so far, I've seen the more recent Rick video, Darrell, Glen, negan, and now Gabriel. I see that there are some women characters in this series, I would love a further analysis on a few more of them if you are able to. Rosita, Sasha, Beth and Maggie are the first to jump to mind. Carol and Michonne seem to have already been done but I haven't watched those yet. Keep it coming great stuff
A few more just came to mind, Lydia, alpha, beta, Andrea... Maybe even Judith eventually. I know that's a lot to ask, I'm a patient guy though, loving this series for real.
Gabriel was first portrayed as a coward who wouldn't have lasted a day on his own outside his church to this point he became another man willing to do anything to survive and save those he wants to save and kill who he was to kill. Everyone changes to survive and his was impressive.
Since you asked, I would love to see videos on a good portion of the supporting cast members. Eugene, Sasha, Rosita, Abraham, Etc. I would also love to see some alternate history storyline videos. For example, what if Carl didn't die? What if Glenn had lived?
Great topic for a video. In some ways he fills the role Hershel where he brings sage-like wisdom. And let's not leave out his interaction the reaper's priest. He was an important of Gabriel's arc.
I think one of the coolest things was Gabriel starting to believe in a Old Testament vengeful god. That scene where he tells that one Whisperer that god told him to hang him was spooky
He was the best part of Season 11 imo. Glad to share a name with him. Also are you going to do a video about Season 11? I think the season was mishandled by the writers and the world building was atrocious. The ending scene where Gabriel opens the gates and only like 20 out of 50k people run in. (They really could've just said the town was only like 5k people or something and it would've made more sense) Also also is that Outlast SFX in the intro?
I agree with everything you say on here 💯. I'd like for u to do something on Judith. 1) she looks a lot younger than what she really should be on the show with all the year jumps. RJ is almost as tall as Judith and I think they messed up on getting her age right. She was a baby and a toddler for way too long imo. I'd also like for u to do one on how many years really went by on the show with all the time jumps. Great video as usual.
When he first appeared I didn't like him and was convinced he was going to be just another character they could kill, but man he turned out to be one of my favorites
I'm happy that Gabriel got such good development to his character. If I remember correctly he dies during the whisperer arc in the comics, so this redemption is a welcomed change in my opinion!
I think Gabriel shouldn't get his own show so the original show can still have interest. In the other hand it would be amazing seeing his story. The only bad would be that most of everyone died off in the original show. He definitely has an amazing arc. The quote that fits Gabriel would be. 1:9 you are never alone be strong be brave be fearless. Joshua .
You should of emphasized mores how he actually lost his faith after the whisperer door he was prepared to die for everyone, but didn’t after his actions and everything he went thought loosing his faith and finding again
I know it’s not really important to the overall story and the bonus episodes are a mixed bag to say the least, but how Gabriel baits and then kills Mays in ‘One More’ is flat out just one of my favourite moments from the show. Couldn’t stand Gabe when he first entered the show but he easily became one of the best characters - and whilst it would’ve been cool to see the brutal tower death (though seriously, we could’ve had that with someone else like Alden or if it was gory enough, a redshirt would’ve been fine) I’m glad he made it to the end with his arc of opening the gates as it rounds him off nicely.
I love Gabriel and I love how he because capable of surviving while Eugene didn't,my uncle once told me that in life you either work with you head or with your hands and if you can't use neither then good luck.Gabriel wasn't the smartest nor the strongest so he had to change while Eugene didn't
I didn’t like Gabriel when he was introduced and I stopped watching TWD when Glenn was killed, then absolutely when it was known Carl was gone. So I never got to see Gabriel grow as a character. But I did see him over time in shorts, and I was definitely impressed. Loved the “Call me Gabriel” scene.
I guess I'm the only person out there that immediately felt bad for Gabriel when he was first introduced. Yes, he wasn't a fighter or very useful in season 5 and did try to stab the group in the back at Alexandria, but he was living alone with his sins for a long time and this sudden invasion of Rick and his group turned his whole world upside down. These random people ripped up his home and kind of forced him to change drastically when he wanted to (possibly) die alone. The scene with him trying to scrub out the blood really hits me because he doesn't want to live in this cruel, violent world. I also found that Gabe had the biggest potential to grow because he's so fresh to the walkers. And I was right in the end! He became incredible!
I never put the thought together of distrusting Father Gabriel because of Beth. He was just to playful and cowardly, to be trusted imo, but I did enjoy his growth
I was so mad at him when he tried to betray them when they got to Alexandria. I'm so glad they didn't destroy his character or turn him into a villain. Love him.
