How FIGURE DRAWING can make you a BETTER ARTIST. 

Drawing is honestly a weird, weird skill when you think about it. It incorporates intuitive knowledge with practice based knowledge and the simplest of changes in methodology you make can change your entire process as well as the end result. I watched your figure drawing video from a couple of years and followed along but with my own image, and the results just shocked me. Mind you, I have Life Drawing experience from school. But it's just perplexing to me how making angle breaks sharp instead of purposefully smooth can make such a tremendous difference. I urge anyone to go and watch that video from Stephen. I believe it's a 3-part video. I never tried it in college when drawing Still Life or gestures, or even long studies with a model. Just very, very surprising in my experience. Try it for yourself. The results are compelling to say the least.

*"The human form is more challenging"* I absolutely agree with Stephen that if you want to level up all of your drawing/painting skills then do figure drawings. It's the most complex thing you can do and teaches you everything from form, shading, proportions, and foreshortening. You might want to add in the ability to draw boxes from any perspective (Drawabox 250 box challenge & suggested by Kim Jung Gi) and when you combine that with figure drawing you can really level up fast.

Stephen, I don't know how much effort goes into your talks nowadays compared to your early days on the interwebz, but you have become such a great speaker!

All your video's have this beauty of zooming in on technical specific things and organically zooming out, on deeper questions. Always the: why? Why do this, this way? Answers without becoming dogmatic. And in the above video it almost becomes an ode to being human. Down to its core: studying the human body. Damn. Now I want to just draw, draw. Thank you for your lessons. I will become a patreon soon.

Everything you said is so true! This video is so inspirational and it’s also where I am at now, I took a break from personal projects and portrait commissions and I am just studying and practicing figure, structure, gesture and anatomy so deeply even when I go to the toilet! Stephen, do you have any tips for students who are (at least in my atelier) obligated to do figure drawing in large format? We always use papers of approx 120cm x 70cm, and we're told to do 40min shaded figure drawing sessions (standing). I find it really difficult to shade, since a good linework in such a scale can only be achieved with charcoal bars, but they add too much darkness and mess up the values. I would love to do it with graphite pencils, just as you're showing here, but I've come to realize they're too fine for the whole scale of our drawings.

Hi, I am a newbie artist here. I don't know if I even qualify as an artist yet but I am working on it. I am still in a very early stage and I haven't got to anatomy yet. But I was just wondering that whenever I start to learn it, is it necessary that I go to live sessions? Because while I understand the benefits of drawing from life, I can't really go to one due to a bunch of reasons. I don't really live in a place where something like that exists and also I have some personal reasons like financial etc. So if I just learn from nude photos of models, can that be enough? Or will I never really gain the true understanding of anatomy and a figure till I attend a real life session?

I did a semester of figure drawing, but it wasn’t in person, it was online due to the Covid. There is a lot to figure drawing, especially shading and proportions.

For a hobbyist no problemo like a kid I always have been but checks out pro’s work ty( artists are generally poor like the old maestro some if not not a huge lot😂

I was watching an animated series called the blue period on Netflix, about a student artist in “school/academy “ and the struggle’s as an artist trying to make it to the “next level”, why they like the styles they chose, artist they like, self loathing at own work, why they want to study art ect…. and a scene popped up during this series, of artists having to draw live nudes for exams, and that it made them feel more uncomfortable / naked, than the model they had to study and draw. Is there any reality to this.? as for an animated series the whole thing seems rather authentic when watching it. But I can only draw! .I’m no artist I can’t paint I’ve never been in those situations, so I’ve no clue. Is it that hard and stressful trying to study art. and is it easy to lose the love / spark for it when have that much pressure on you to pass exams ect..
