I’d love to see a canister and sponge filter one. Planning on sponge filters in next tank to start but plan on switching if it isn’t keeping up the way I want. Would be super interested in how it would change my flow if I were to switch to a canister. Also appreciate the dumbed down version. The science behind it doesn’t help me make a any more of an informed decision than I can make with just the dummy version.

Bentley good job explaining. In my 40 breeder I'm running a title 75 on the side of my planted tank. Also running a small power head and 2 sponge filter and my tank does well pushing detritus to my filters. But it's good to understand the differences of placing filters

This is very timely for me! I'm running into more detritus/mulm build up issues as my vegetation gets more dense. Since I've got a small herd of cory's at the bottom, they're constantly kicking up debris lol. The heavy vegetation is creating dead zones, and even with my filter configured in your latter suggestion, I'm still getting mulm settling on plant leaves. I've bought a pump for more circulation and have yet to install it. Hope it gets the job done lol

I prefer mine on the back, either big one in the centre or two smaller ones on each side. That way you have areas of lower flow which I find works better for the average community. River tank with fish that like faster water, put it on the side. It does seem to me sometimes that people overdo the whole flow thing, almost like motorheads competing with their engine sizes. Seen to many tanks where the fish are being blown around. Good vid as always!

I have 2 Tidal 55s on the back of my 37 gal tank. The skimmers are blocked but for a small strip at the top. My logic being if the clean water is entering from the top, you want the maximum pickup at the bottom. I went to Tidal, as I simply got tired of decades of fiddling around with Aquaclears to get them running after maintenance/power outages. I'd definitely like to see additional footage on both canister and air driven filters.

Thank you for the video... I just purchased a Tidal 75 yesterday to replace my JEBO canister filter on my 55 gallon goldfish (only 5 fish) tank. The canister filter really wasn't doing a great job because even within 5 days of a water change and cleaning the glass, the algae accumulates so quickly. I really wasn't sure where I should place the HOB... either on one side or in the center.

Thank you for this series! It’s so helpful 🙏🙏🙏 i’m rethinking my filter/powerhead placements in my tanks. What if you have floating plants tho? Does that hamper the flow up top from circling back strong enough? What do we do then?? 😳

I would love to see cannisters. I have a GLA 22L with double intakes and a flow tamer spray bar which is double drilled. I have fancy goldfish in a custom built 36 x 20 x 28. (very size specific for the space it is in) that is why I need a really good filter...my fancy golds are water pigs. BTW I also run a plenum UGF in the Dr. Novak style. Yes I know I have over kill filtration! Just would like to know how you would set up the intakes and spray bar for maximum flow filtration. Thanks...love your videos, they are always full of great information. You taught me all about aquarium lighting...thanks for that. Teri

Hardscape can be used to modify your currents to mitigate low flow zones in your tank if you wish to be fussy about it. In some cases you may want to be this picky, in others it doesn't matter. A great way to maximize flow using a Tidal 35 in a 20g high tank is to have a piece of log-shaped driftwood running side of the tank to the other side sitting at an angle so there is clear space underneath the log. Tidal goes on the back of the tank. Outflow will run along the surface of the water, back to front, then when it descends it will tend to circle underneath the log. I can see this happening as duckweed shoots across the surface, down towards the front, under the log and back up towards the filter intake again. A completely unintended benefit of this is that the duckweed gets stuck underneath the log where my snails like to hang out and eat it all (the snail species in question loves plants). It's perfect.

Yes to seeing sponge filter edition. I've oddly never considered that my intentionally lower water level is impacting my low flow areas of tank, and it is suddenly obvious that it is. I just assumed my low flow areas are from plant growth and poor plant placement and as I don't want to disrupt some prized plants, I pay more attention to debris in those areas.

Thank you Bentley. Very helpful video! Can you please make one more video about when setting multiful filters. I like to use more than one filter and the main filter I like to set up is a canister filter. I always wonder how I should set up the flow direction.
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe Год назад
Basically you are just combining the different flow patterns, think of it like that and you can easily do the placement how you feel is best for the fish you want to keep

With the concept of a plenum and anoxic, wouldn’t you prefer more detritus? How does fluid dynamics work with a weir and a plenum without an uplift tube?

I have a 75 gallon freshwater small fish community tank (kuhli loaches, cory doras, tetras, danios, guppies, and mollies) with an AquaClear 110 HOB on the back, so half of my tank is almost stagnant. I've played with both a wavemaker and a powerhead (not together). I just can't seem to decide on placement for either to optimize the water flow for keeping my tank clean and keeping the debris from settling and not moving to the hob filter. Any suggestions, diagrams like the ones you're doing now would be a great help!!! Thank you!!!

Hey Bently, where should I put a sponge filter to a HoB to maximize flow and detritus pick up? from ur bad drawing I guess the opposite end on the substrate floor, where it churns?

That's likely the best spot yes, if it's not an intake sponge on the HOB itself

Wouldn’t air stones at the other side of the tank help with the movement and pushing the water in about a 20 gallon tank. I unfortunately bought a filter system recommended for a 20 gallon. I didn’t one up it

I am wondering whether this info is based on actual science or your observations? Dont like looking at an hob in center back of my rimless tanks...but will move them if better overall. Mine are at sides now and eventually will try canisters....
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 11 месяцев назад
You don't have to have a filter placed in a specific spot. You're still filtering the tanks water, this is more how you can affect the movement of water within a tank IF you want to. This is partial science (understanding how water moves, path of least resistance and suction) combined with experience. If we wanted the "full scientific" route it would require literally hundreds of tanks and filters pushing particulates around a tank in an observed fashion (think like wind tunnel testing aerodynamics). Far too costly for a hobbyist to perform.

Have you been checking out my videos? Until this. never seen anyone explain this before. One thing you didn't mention is. Hob filter restart. A lot of people complain about the best hob out there the aquaclear. That it won't restart after a power outage. If you keep the water level right they have no problem restarting. The tidal hob is crap. The only thing they have going for them is the pump is in the water. They don't skim. The media capacity is a joke and the sponge that comes with them is almost non-existent. Plus is the water does get low they're ridiculously loud. Anyways keep your water level just above the lip on the exit ramp of your hob's for proper filter performance. That goes for all brands.

Seachem tidal hands down. Don't care for the aquacraps stuff. Had them and threw them out. Now it is just seachem tidal an FX 6 on all my takes
@SG-Cichlids
@SG-Cichlids Год назад
@DAVID Olsen unless it was given to me I'd never own another tidal. Aquaclear is far superior other than the pump not being in the tank. Comes with a properly sized sponge plus plenty of room for other media. Tidal are crap. No sponge, bypass worse than an aquaclear, noisy, ect. I would have to agree with you on the fx6. I have several and they are without a doubt the best canister filter on the market.
