Sometimes when I'm showing filters to new hobbyists they're scared to mess with their filter by customizing it, while others think it's too much work or research and prefer to go with the "easier" cartridge and whatever else the filter comes with. Most new hobbyists have never heard of beneficial bacteria in aquariums, the nitrogen cycle, or knew that filters could be customized in the first place. I understand the desire for some to go by the book or the manufacturer's recommendations (even though a lot of the time they make no sense, i.e. replacing media every x months which can crash your newly cycled tank), but I also think the fear of doing something wrong stems from lack of education on how filters work, why they're a good thing to have in your tank, what should and should not go in them, etc. Thanks for taking the time to teach us something new with these videos!

(thin pony tail elastic, or thin elastic by the yard, cut and tied to fit adequately, and still remove and install the prefilter easily enough. LOVE the sponge intake filter! Thank you Cory! I just ordered 2 of the coarse sponge pads and am super excited to optimize my two Aquaclear 70s! I recently bought foam from a craft store but it's been an epic failure. It's way too dense and my filter baskets are constantly being pushed up and now I'm worried about running the motors dead haha. I'm sure they're fine but I've had the filters 2.5 years now so I don't want to take my chances. I use your large pre filters on the intake tubes and they've been an AMAZING addition. For the life of me I don't know why I didn't just buy your coarse sponge pad from the get go!

With my marineland hang on the backs I put filter floss in the cages and use a finer sponge first to maximize the surface area. I also added some sponge inside the square cage at the bottom of the intake to catch the brunt of the waste. Easier and faster to clean the small intake cage sponge plus I have Pleanty of medium to seed other tanks for myself or new hobbyists.

Great tips. Got into the hobby about a year ago and it took me months to figure this out. Kept wondering why when I changed my cartridges, a day would go by and the water would get cloudy. One thing I would also suggest is to go to Walmart and get some basic polyfill. Put that in front of your coarse sponge as a prefilter. It's cheap and you can toss it out next water change, this way your coarse sponge doesn't get too gunky, and just a quick rinse in tank water is enough to keep it going great.

Fast forward, my 8yo saw old pics of dad and his tank, so here I..we go again. Started with a 3g, up to 5g, now at a 10g. The coarse sponges are great for biological filtration but do not provide much of mechanical filtration which is one of the main purposes of a HOB filter. You are better off using one piece of sponge and the cartridge (or some kind of filter floss to polish the water). The pre-filter sponge is a good recommendation.
